Compare screenshots from the same route or component, viewport, browser, data, and interaction state against a reviewed baseline. Inspect each diff before deciding whether it signals a defect, rendering noise, or an intentional UI change. A threshold can help manage small pixel variations, but it should be tuned only after you understand the differences it permits.
Set up a reliable screenshot comparison
- Define the test state. Record the route or component, viewport, browser project, relevant data, and interaction state. Keep these the same for the baseline and each new capture.
- Create a reference image. With Playwright Test, the first
toHaveScreenshot()run creates a reference screenshot. Treat it as a proposed baseline: inspect it, then approve and commit it as the expected appearance. - Capture and compare consistently. Later runs capture the same page or element and compare it with the stored image. Playwright waits until two consecutive screenshots match before comparing the last capture with the expectation.
- Review the failure. Compare the current screenshot and diff with the intended design and test state. A failed comparison means the rendering changed; it does not, by itself, prove there is a bug.
- Reduce noise at the source. Run in a consistent environment and stabilize volatile content. Playwright can apply a stylesheet during screenshot capture to filter dynamic elements. Do not mask areas that matter to the test.
- Adjust sensitivity only when justified. Start with a clear, strict setting, inspect false positives and false negatives, and document why any tolerance is acceptable.
- Update the baseline deliberately. When a product change is intentional, review the screenshots and update the expected images in version control. Do not accept a new baseline automatically just because a test failed.
Choose the comparison method
Pixel comparison
A pixel diff flags differences in image pixels. It is useful when exact rendering matters, and Playwright exposes controls including maximum differing pixels, maximum differing-pixel ratio, and a per-pixel perceived color threshold. Those settings control sensitivity; no single threshold is right for every test.
Perceptual or structural comparison
If harmless pixel-level variations produce excessive noise, a perceptual or structural method may be a better fit. Vitest’s visual regression guide discusses these alternatives. They can tolerate minor rendering differences, so verify that the method still catches the visual changes your tests are meant to detect.
Choose based on the signal you care about: exactness versus tolerance for minor noise, control over browser and viewport, how clearly changed regions can be reviewed, and how well baseline approval fits your local or CI workflow.

Why screenshots differ when the UI looks unchanged
Rendering can vary even when the page appears equivalent to a person. Microsoft Playwright’s Visual comparisons documentation notes that browser rendering can vary with host OS, browser version and settings, hardware, power source, headless mode, and other factors. Keep the environment consistent before loosening comparison rules.
- Text edges or fine outlines differ: check font rasterization, anti-aliasing, browser version, and OS. First rerun in the same pinned environment.
- Large regions shift: check viewport dimensions, device scale, page and interaction state, font and image readiness, animation, data, and timestamps. A small layout change can shift content below it.
- Only one browser project fails: decide whether each browser should have its own baseline or whether cross-browser parity is the requirement. Rendering engines can legitimately produce different output.
- A dependency update changes the baseline: inspect browser and framework versions and determine whether the appearance change is expected before approving new references.
- The diff is noisy but acceptable: stabilize capture conditions first; then consider an explained threshold or a perceptual or structural comparator. Preserve a reviewable signal for important regions.
Thresholds: what to tune and what not to assume
Playwright’s screenshot assertions provide configurable matching controls, including maximum-difference settings. Use them to express an explicit tolerance, not to make unexplained failures disappear. Inspect representative diffs and check both kinds of error: harmless changes being flagged and meaningful changes being missed. The framework documentation does not establish a universal threshold that is appropriate for every page or project.

Does a screenshot diff failure always mean a visual bug?
No. It identifies a rendering difference that needs review; it may reflect an intentional change or capture noise.
