Update a VPS kernel through the package channel supported by its operating system and image, then reboot in a planned maintenance window to start using the new kernel. Before restarting a remote server, confirm who controls its kernel and boot configuration and make sure you can reach a provider console or rescue environment if normal networking does not return.
First identify the running kernel and who manages it
A VPS does not necessarily boot the kernel installed inside its guest operating system. The provider, image configuration, or boot setup may determine which kernel starts, so check before changing packages or rebooting.
- Identify the operating system:
cat /etc/os-release. - Record the kernel currently running:
uname -r. - Check the VPS image and provider documentation to determine whether the guest OS or provider supplies and selects the booted kernel. The exact arrangement depends on the provider and image.
- Confirm the distribution release, CPU architecture, and installed kernel package before choosing an update. Do not copy a package name from instructions for a different release or architecture.
The commands above are useful diagnostics; they do not establish who owns the kernel or how a particular provider boots the VPS. Resolve that from the image and provider documentation.
Update through the distribution’s supported package channel
Debian
For a Debian-managed kernel, use the configured Debian repositories and package manager, and consult the release notes for the Debian release actually installed. Debian’s release guidance recommends an appropriate linux-image-* metapackage so later package upgrades can follow kernel updates. Check that the metapackage matches the machine’s architecture and environment; do not assume one package name suits every VPS.

Review the proposed package transaction before confirming it. Avoid installing an upstream mainline or custom-built kernel as the routine security-update path: that adds bootloader and recovery responsibilities and is not necessary for ordinary distribution kernel maintenance.
Ubuntu
Use Ubuntu’s APT update and security-update workflow for the installed release. Enabling Ubuntu Livepatch does not automatically install APT security updates, so keep the package-update process in place even when Livepatch is active.

Other distributions and provider-managed kernels
Use the update mechanism documented for the specific distribution and image. The procedure is different across distributions, and a provider-managed kernel may not be updated by installing a guest operating-system kernel package. Confirm the supported path with the relevant documentation rather than assuming Debian or Ubuntu instructions apply.
Installing a kernel is not the same as running it
A package manager can install a newer kernel while the VPS continues running its previous kernel. To activate the newly installed kernel, plan a reboot. Debian recommends rebooting at the next available opportunity after a kernel installation; Canonical likewise says a reboot is required to upgrade to a newer kernel version.

For a production service, schedule the restart in a maintenance window appropriate to its users and dependencies. Communicate the expected interruption, and, where practical, exercise the update on a representative non-production VPS first. The time required and service impact depend on the system; no fixed downtime estimate applies to every VPS.
Prepare remote recovery before rebooting
A remote server can fail to boot or fail to restore networking after a kernel change. Debian’s release guidance cautions administrators of remotely managed systems to prepare for that possibility, including arranging serial-terminal access where available.

- Confirm that current backups exist and that the application has a recovery procedure.
- Locate the provider’s rescue mode, serial console, or equivalent out-of-band access, and verify how to reach it from the control panel.
- Make sure you can access the provider control panel without relying on the VPS’s own network connection.
- Check the provider’s instructions for selecting a prior kernel or booting a rescue environment, if those options are available.
Console names and recovery controls vary by provider. Do not assume that a particular rescue mode or rollback feature exists until you have verified it for your VPS.
Reboot and verify the result
- Confirm that the package update completed and note which kernel package was installed.
- Reboot during the agreed maintenance window using the normal restart method documented for your distribution or provider.
- After the VPS returns, check that it is reachable and run
uname -rto see which kernel is running. Compare it with the intended installed kernel, accounting for the provider’s boot configuration. - Check the services that matter to the workload, including application processes, storage mounts, firewall rules, and monitoring.
- If the VPS does not return, use the provider’s documented console or rescue route and follow the distribution’s recovery instructions. Do not repeatedly restart without first checking the console output and available recovery options.
Can you update a VPS kernel without rebooting?
Sometimes a supported live-patching service can apply a defined subset of kernel security fixes to the running kernel without an immediate reboot. That is not equivalent to installing and booting a newer kernel version, and it does not eliminate the need for regular package updates or a reboot plan.

Ubuntu Livepatch
Canonical describes Livepatch as covering high- and critical-severity kernel security fixes on supported systems. Coverage depends on the Ubuntu release, kernel flavor, architecture, and exact kernel; check current eligibility and the client status for the VPS rather than assuming support. Canonical’s guidance states: “Live kernel patching is not sufficient when you need to upgrade your kernel to a newer version — a reboot is required in that case.” Livepatch also does not automatically enable APT security updates. Other changes, including some microcode, low-level dependency, or firmware updates, may still require a restart.
Specialized live-update mechanisms
The Linux kernel’s Live Update Orchestrator describes a specialized, kexec-based way to move between kernel versions while preserving selected resources. It depends on supported kernel and system components; it is not a general-purpose, turnkey no-reboot facility for an ordinary VPS administrator.
| Approach | What it can do | What it does not replace |
|---|---|---|
| Distribution kernel package followed by reboot | Installs the distribution-provided kernel and activates it after restart. | Provider-specific checks, recovery preparation, or application verification. |
| Ubuntu Livepatch, when the exact system is supported | Applies supported high- and critical-severity kernel security fixes to the running kernel without an immediate reboot. | APT security updates or rebooting to move to a newer kernel version. |
| Live Update Orchestrator | A specialized kexec-based kernel transition that can preserve selected resources on supported systems. | A universal no-reboot workflow for general VPS installations. |
Common kernel-update problems and what to check
- The running version did not change: A package may have installed successfully without activating the new kernel. Check
uname -rand arrange the required reboot; if the version still differs afterward, check which kernel the provider or boot configuration selects. - The VPS is unreachable after reboot: Use the provider’s out-of-band console or rescue path. Inspect boot and networking status there, then follow provider and distribution recovery guidance.
- The expected kernel package is missing: Verify the configured repositories, OS release, architecture, and kernel ownership. A provider-managed kernel may not be supplied through the guest’s normal package channel.
- Livepatch is enabled but a fix or new version is not present: Check whether the release, architecture, kernel flavor, and exact kernel are eligible, and inspect the client status. Livepatch has limited scope and does not install APT updates or switch to a newer kernel version.
- Applications or mounts fail after restart: Check service status, mount configuration, firewall rules, and monitoring. Use the prepared recovery process if normal remote access or the workload cannot be restored.
Or let it run in the cloud
This Linux kernel-update guide is separate from YouTube streaming: StreamNeo does not manage VPS kernels. For the distinct task of keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos, StreamNeo at streamneo.com works in three steps: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It runs the loop in the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home; it supports uploaded video as made up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. To try it, start a StreamNeo account.
