Test web application interfaces in layers: verify isolated logic without a browser when possible, test component boundaries with integration tests, and use browser automation for behavior that depends on rendering, browser behavior, or a complete user journey. Add accessibility evaluation throughout—automated scans help, but they cannot establish full WCAG conformance on their own.
Choose the right testing layer
A useful UI testing strategy does not send every check through a browser. Start with the narrowest test that can give reliable evidence, then add browser coverage where it catches risks the lower layer cannot. Selenium’s guidance advises considering unit tests or other lower-level approaches first because functional end-user tests are more expensive to run and can need substantial infrastructure (Selenium: Overview of Test Automation).
Unit tests
Use unit tests for isolated logic that can be verified without rendering the application: for example, validation rules, formatting, or state transitions. They are usually a more direct way to locate a logic defect than reproducing it through a full browser journey.
Integration tests
Use integration tests to check interactions across components or modules at the narrowest useful boundary. This can reveal wiring and data-flow problems without paying the setup and execution cost of a full end-to-end scenario.

Browser-based functional and end-to-end tests
Use browser tests when the result depends on what a user sees or does in the rendered application: navigation, browser-specific behavior, interactive controls, or a journey that crosses meaningful application boundaries. A form journey might load the form, enter values, submit it, and verify the confirmation or validation state. Selenium frames a focused browser test as setting up data, performing discrete actions, and evaluating results (Selenium: Overview of Test Automation).
Regression tests
Regression testing means rerunning selected checks after a change, fix, or feature addition to detect breakage. The regression set may be partial or broad and may combine unit, integration, and browser checks; it need not mean replaying every test after every change (Selenium: Types of Testing).
What should go into a browser test?
Choose browser scenarios that prove user-visible outcomes that matter and cannot be established as confidently at a lower level. Good candidates include a key navigation path, a form submission and its visible result, a permission-dependent interaction, or a layout-sensitive behavior. Keep each scenario to a small set of actions and clear checks; a test that covers many unrelated flows is harder to diagnose when it fails.

- Prepare controlled data. Set up only the records and conditions the scenario needs.
- Perform a short user journey. Use the same kinds of visible controls and actions a user would use.
- Assert observable outcomes. Check the visible message, state, destination URL, or other user-facing result.
Prefer queries and assertions based on roles, labels, visible text, and state over selectors tied to private implementation details such as CSS classes or internal function names. Playwright’s guidance recommends verifying behavior for end users rather than relying on implementation details (Playwright: Best Practices).
How to make browser tests more reliable
- Isolate state. Each test should begin from controlled conditions rather than depending on another test’s order or leftover browser state. Playwright documents a fresh browser context for each test as an isolation mechanism (Playwright: Browser contexts; Playwright: Best Practices).
- Keep scenarios small. A focused test gives failures a smaller search area and avoids fragile, overloaded journeys.
- Assert what a user can observe. Prefer visible state, accessible names, and destinations over internal implementation details.
- Run the relevant browser matrix deliberately. Include browsers and environments aligned with your product’s support commitments and audience; do not assume every possible version and operating-system combination is practical.
- Use failure evidence. Playwright documents trace-based debugging for investigating failures in CI (Playwright: Trace Viewer).
These practices improve diagnosability, but no framework eliminates the cost of browser setup or makes a poorly controlled scenario dependable by itself.
Plan cross-browser coverage around risk
Browser compatibility can matter even when an application works in a developer’s default browser. Selenium notes that enumerating browsers, browser versions, and operating systems can become a substantial undertaking (Selenium: Overview of Test Automation). Define a matrix from actual audience and support commitments, then prioritize combinations where a failure would be consequential.

Playwright documents projects for Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit, which can support a deliberate cross-browser suite (Playwright: Browsers). That documented capability is not a benchmark or a reason to test every conceivable environment. Select the engines and environments that match the application’s users and risk.
Include accessibility as a separate evaluation stream
Automated accessibility checks can catch some common issues, including poor contrast, missing accessible labels, and duplicate IDs, but they cannot detect every WCAG violation. Do not treat a clean scanner result as proof that an application is fully accessible (Playwright: Accessibility testing).
WCAG conformance is based on testable success criteria, and evaluating those criteria involves both automated testing and human evaluation. Build an assessment that combines scans, manual checks, and usability testing that includes people with disabilities. The W3C WAI reference here is WCAG 2.2 Understanding Conformance, updated September 20, 2026; this is standards guidance, not a claim about what any particular jurisdiction legally requires (W3C WAI: Understanding Conformance).

Select a browser automation tool by fit, not brand
There is no universal best tool. Compare candidates against the constraints of your application and team:
| Decision factor | What to evaluate |
|---|---|
| Coverage | Browser engines, devices, and operating systems relevant to your users and support commitments. |
| Test interface | Whether tests can express actions and checks through roles, labels, text, visible state, and URLs. |
| Isolation and repeatability | Whether tests can start with controlled application and browser state. |
| Execution cost | Browser startup, CI infrastructure, parallel execution needs, and total suite duration. |
| Debugging | Whether failures leave useful traces, DOM snapshots, network details, or reproducible evidence. |
| Accessibility support | Whether scans can be incorporated and how their limits will be covered with human evaluation. |
| Team fit | Language ecosystem, existing infrastructure, skills, maintenance burden, and support expectations. |
Playwright documents user-visible assertions, cross-browser projects, isolated contexts, and trace-based debugging; Selenium emphasizes browser coverage as well as the cost and infrastructure demands of end-user tests. These are documented capabilities and guidance, not a head-to-head performance comparison (Playwright: Best Practices; Playwright: Browser contexts; Playwright: Trace Viewer; Selenium: Overview of Test Automation).
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use screenshots to inspect rendered output
A screenshot can help review a rendered page or preserve visual evidence for a UI check, but it is not a substitute for assertions about behavior or an accessibility assessment. For a locally controlled browser workflow, capture the page after the application reaches the state you need, then inspect the image alongside functional checks.

Troubleshoot common test failures
- A test passes alone but fails in the suite: Look for shared data, persistent browser state, or order dependence. Restore controlled starting conditions and isolate each scenario.
- A locator breaks after a UI refactor: It may be coupled to a CSS class or internal structure. Prefer a user-facing role, label, or text locator where appropriate.
- A CI failure is hard to reproduce: Inspect the available trace or other failure evidence, then reproduce the same browser and application conditions locally when possible.
- A browser suite takes too long or needs excessive infrastructure: Move checks that do not depend on rendered browser behavior to unit or integration tests; keep browser coverage focused on user-visible risks.
- An accessibility scan reports no issues, but users still encounter barriers: Automated scanning has limits. Add manual assessment and usability testing with people with disabilities rather than treating the scan as conformance proof.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does UI testing mean testing only in a browser?
No. UI assurance can include unit and integration tests as well as browser checks; use the browser where rendering, browser behavior, or an end-user journey needs validation.
Can an automated accessibility scan prove WCAG conformance?
No. Scans detect some issues, but WCAG evaluation also requires human assessment.
