Yes. Selenium IDE lets you record a browser workflow and replay it as a test without hand-writing Selenium commands. You can use it to create a first test, save it in a .side project file, and play it back in the IDE. The no-code part is strongest for authoring a simple test; running tests across browsers or on Selenium Grid adds command-line setup.
What Selenium IDE does—and what “without code” means
The Selenium project describes Selenium IDE as a tool that “records and plays back a user’s actions.” It turns interactions such as opening pages and clicking controls into Selenium commands that can be replayed. The official overview lists Chrome, Firefox, and Edge: Selenium IDE overview.
You do not need to write those commands to record and run a basic test in the IDE. You should still inspect the recording and update it when the application changes. And recording a test is not the same as provisioning a reliable multi-browser test environment: command-line and Grid runs require additional tools and configuration.
Install Selenium IDE and record your first test
- Choose an installation route. Open the Selenium downloads page and follow the link for Chrome, Firefox, or Edge. Store availability and compatibility can change, so check the current listing for your browser.
- Create a project. Start a new project in Selenium IDE and enter a project name and the tested application’s base URL. The base URL is used across tests in the project and can be changed later.
- Record a representative flow. Begin recording and carry out the actions you want the test to repeat in the application. Prefer a focused flow with a clear outcome over a long recording of unrelated navigation.
- Stop and review. Stop recording, inspect the generated steps, and make sure they represent the intended path through the application. A recorded action sequence can become stale when the page or workflow changes.
- Save the project. Save the project as a
.sidefile. The Selenium IDE guide describes a project as a single file: Getting Started. - Replay the test. Select the test or suite and use the IDE playback control. The guide says playback reuses an open recording window when one is available; otherwise, it opens a new one.
What playback covers, and when setup expands
In-IDE playback
For a first test, recording and playback in the IDE is the simplest path. Run the selected test or suite in the browser, then use failures to identify a changed page, an incorrect step, or an application behavior that needs attention.

Command-line and cross-browser runs
For local command-line execution, Selenium’s runner guide requires the selenium-side-runner, the browser, and that browser’s matching driver. The guide names ChromeDriver, EdgeDriver, geckodriver, and SafariDriver. A saved project can be passed to the runner; cross-browser and Grid execution are not just a matter of pressing the IDE’s playback button.
The runner documentation also describes Grid execution through a server URL and browser capabilities, along with test filtering and suite-level parallel workers. Those options are useful when a project needs broader coverage, but exact commands and dependency requirements can change. Consult the current Selenium IDE command-line runner guide and the Selenium IDE repository for current package requirements rather than relying on old Node-version instructions in older documentation.

Version and compatibility notes
Selenium IDE materials span different product eras. The official overview uses the browser-extension description and names Chrome, Firefox, and Edge. The Selenium IDE v4 project wiki, dated August 29, 2023, says the version discussed there is no longer a webextension and explains the project’s architecture choice in part through browser-level features and the Manifest V3 transition. That historical statement does not establish the current store status or compatibility of every release: Selenium IDE v4 project wiki.
Some learning pages are explicitly old: the getting-started page is marked last updated in February 2019, and the FAQ includes extension-era filesystem guidance. Do not treat that FAQ’s filesystem restriction or its anticipated native-app passage as universal current v4 behavior: Selenium IDE FAQ.

The releases page has displayed beta entries, including 4.0.1-beta.14 in the observed listing, but that does not prove it is the newest release available through every browser store or that no newer stable version exists. Check the current release page and the relevant browser listing before choosing a version.
Common problems and practical fixes
- The recorded test no longer follows the intended flow. Review the steps against the current application, re-record or edit the affected part, and replay it. Changes to page structure or workflow can make an old recording inaccurate.
- The test works in the IDE but not from the command line. Check that the runner, target browser, and matching driver are installed and available to the environment running the command. For Grid runs, also verify the server URL and browser capabilities against the current runner guide.
- A browser install or compatibility path is unclear. Start from the Selenium downloads page and follow the current browser-specific link; do not assume an older extension instruction still matches the current IDE architecture.
- An older help page recommends an outdated prerequisite or workaround. Treat its version-specific directions as historical, then confirm supported Node and package requirements in the current runner documentation or repository.
