Selenium 2.26 was announced on November 2, 2012. The project highlighted support for newer browser versions, including native events on Firefox 16; removal of deprecated methods from language bindings; improved Internet Explorer input emulation for “sucker fish” menus; and numerous bug fixes. The announcement pointed to the changelog for the full list, so these are highlights rather than a complete inventory.

When Selenium 2.26 was released

Selenium contributor Simon Stewart announced Selenium 2.26 on Friday, November 2, 2012. The release is useful context when examining older test suites, dependency histories, or migration notes; its announcement is not a guide to current browser compatibility.

Project-wide release highlights

  • Newer browser versions: The announcement called out support for newer popular browser versions, specifically including native events on Firefox 16.
  • Deprecated binding methods removed: The release removed deprecated methods from language bindings. The announcement does not enumerate those methods in its summary, so consult the full changelog for binding-specific details.
  • Improved Internet Explorer input emulation: Selenium improved the emulation of user input for “sucker fish” style menus, a kind of menu interaction that can depend on realistic pointer or keyboard events.
  • Bug fixes: The project also reported numerous fixes without quantifying them in the announcement summary.

These are the release announcement’s broad points, not an exhaustive list. Stewart directed readers to the changelog, writing, “There’s more in the changelog!”

Python-specific changes listed in the archived changelog

The Python component changelog in the Selenium 2.52.2 source tag records two Selenium 2.26 additions. These entries apply to the Python component; they should not be treated as proof that every language binding gained the same APIs.

  • location_when_scrolled_into_view was added (Bug 4357).
  • A new expected_conditions support module was added for use with WebDriverWait.

The two Python entries are more specific than the project-wide summary: they name concrete additions, while the general announcement describes changes across the bindings and browser support at a higher level.

What Selenium 2.26 means for current browser automation

Selenium 2 is legacy software, not a version to select for a new browser automation stack. The Selenium project’s legacy documentation describes Selenium 2 as a rewrite of Selenium 1 using WebDriver code. It also warns that the legacy Firefox driver was a browser extension and no longer works under Firefox’s changed security model; the documentation points users to geckodriver. That warning concerns the legacy Firefox extension driver specifically, not every Selenium 2 driver or browser.

In an August 28, 2013 roadmap post, Simon Stewart described WebDriver APIs as Selenium 2’s major addition and outlined the project’s work toward Selenium 3. He said original Selenium Core implementations and RC APIs would leave active development except for very urgent fixes, and encouraged users to move to WebDriver APIs directly. This provides historical context for the direction of the project; it is not an additional Selenium 2.26 release note.

ScreenshotNeo for capturing pages during automation work

If you need website screenshots as part of a current automation workflow, ScreenshotNeo is a separate website screenshot API and MCP server from Yorker Media, not a Selenium project component. It can return a screenshot or PDF from one GET request, and its documented features include browser options such as viewport, wait conditions, custom headers, and cookies. The API documentation is at ScreenshotNeo docs.

Or skip the browser setup

Use this cURL request, replacing the example URL with the page you want to capture:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo accepts consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
