For an occasional capture, use a current browser and its built-in screenshot feature. For a permitted, repeatable workflow, use a browser renderer such as Cloudflare Browser Run or Playwright, then record the page URL, capture time, viewport, and whether the image is full-page.
Choose a capture method that fits the job
One-off capture: use a regular browser
For one page and one view, open the publicly accessible URL in an up-to-date browser and use its built-in screenshot function or your operating system’s screen-capture tool. This captures what the browser displays and avoids setting up an automation workflow. If the page shows a Cloudflare challenge instead of the landing page, stop rather than automating the challenge.
Repeatable capture: use a browser renderer
For a workflow that needs a chosen viewport, full-page output, or an element capture, use a browser-rendering tool. Cloudflare Browser Run offers Quick Actions for simple screenshots and browser sessions with integrations including Playwright, Puppeteer, CDP, and Stagehand. Its screenshot endpoint renders HTML and JavaScript before capture. Cloudflare Browser Run documentation and the screenshot endpoint reference describe the available options.
Cloudflare also documents a Playwright integration. Its example navigates to a page and calls page.screenshot(); the fact that Playwright can capture an authorized page does not make it appropriate for getting past a challenge. See Cloudflare’s Playwright documentation.

Check that you are allowed to capture the page
Review the target site’s terms and any published crawler guidance before automating or storing a screenshot. Limit captures to pages you are allowed to view and use. Avoid bulk requests, login-only pages, and attempts to work around access controls unless the site owner has authorized them. Whether you may automate, retain, publish, or commercially reuse a particular screenshot depends on the target site and your use; the presence or absence of a crawler rule does not settle that question.
Cloudflare describes robots.txt as advisory, not enforceable. That file communicates crawler preferences; it is not a grant of permission, and server-side controls such as authentication or WAF rules can still restrict access. Read Cloudflare’s robots.txt guidance alongside the site’s own terms. Cloudflare’s sample terms are illustrative information, not legal advice or terms for your target site.

Set the screenshot view deliberately
Choose viewport or full page
Match the viewport to the comparison you intend to make: a desktop-width capture and a mobile-width capture can show different layouts. Use a viewport screenshot when you want to compare the initial screen; use full-page capture when below-the-fold sections matter. Cloudflare’s screenshot endpoint documents a default viewport of 1920×1080, along with options for a custom viewport, full-page capture, and capturing a selected element. Specify the dimensions you need instead of assuming the default matches your comparison. See the endpoint reference.
Wait for rendered content
A page that depends on JavaScript must be rendered before a useful screenshot can be taken. Cloudflare’s screenshot endpoint documents rendering HTML and JavaScript, but individual pages can still vary with time, viewport, session, or user agent. Inspect the resulting image for incomplete loading, lazy-loaded sections, sticky elements, consent banners, and other overlays. Use the renderer’s documented wait options where available; do not assume that a screenshot taken immediately after navigation represents a fully loaded page.
Save enough context to compare later
For each image, note the URL, date and time, viewport dimensions, and whether the capture is viewport-only or full-page. Also record whether a consent prompt or a regional or session difference affected what appeared. These details make a later comparison interpretable; they do not make separate captures identical.

Use a documented Cloudflare screenshot workflow
Cloudflare’s Browser Run screenshot endpoint accepts a URL and supports a viewport and full-page capture. It requires an API token with the documented permission. Follow Cloudflare’s current authentication instructions and use its documented endpoint input format rather than exposing an API token in a public page or shared script. The endpoint can also accept HTML; for a workflow that needs both rendered HTML and a screenshot, Cloudflare documents a separate snapshot endpoint.
For an authorized page, the basic sequence is:
- Choose the target URL and a viewport that represents the comparison you need.
- Send the request to the Browser Run screenshot endpoint with the required API token and capture options, following the current endpoint documentation.
- Open the returned image and check that the intended page, rather than a challenge, overlay, or incomplete load, was captured.
- Save the image with its URL, time, viewport, and capture mode.
If you need rendered HTML as well as an image, use Cloudflare’s snapshot endpoint, which documents returning both formats.

What to do when Cloudflare shows a challenge
Cloudflare challenges check whether a visitor is human rather than an automated script; an interstitial challenge holds the request and prevents access to the destination until the check passes. See Cloudflare’s explanation of challenges and its description of interstitial Challenge Pages.

This is about using those tools as challenge solvers; it is distinct from using browser automation to capture pages you are authorized to access. When a challenge interrupts the capture, stop the automated attempt. Ask the site owner for access, use an authorized public alternative, or capture manually if permitted. Do not change browser fingerprints, rotate proxies, replay clearance cookies, or automate challenge interaction to get through.

Troubleshoot an unusable screenshot

Can Playwright take a screenshot of a page protected by Cloudflare?
It can capture pages the operator is authorized to access, but Cloudflare says automated browsers are not supported for solving production challenges. Stop if a challenge appears.
