To capture comparable Google results pages in different languages, keep the query and region consistent, apply Google’s Results Language Filter to one language at a time, and save a screenshot of each page. Record the language, region, query, device or viewport, and capture time with every file: the screenshot documents what appeared in that session, not a permanent or guaranteed ranking.
Decide what you are comparing
Choose whether you want to isolate the effect of the results-language filter or compare localized markets. These are different experiments:
- Language comparison: Keep the query and results region fixed; change only the Results Language Filter between captures.
- Market comparison: Change the results region along with the language if that reflects the markets you want to study. Record both changes so you do not attribute region-driven differences to language alone.
For a controlled language comparison, keep the query wording, browser or device, viewport, and other relevant conditions as consistent as practical. Translating the query changes another variable, so note it explicitly if you do so.
Understand the three language and location controls
Display language
Google’s display-language setting changes interface text such as buttons and menus; it does not force result documents into that language. Google considers multiple signals, including the query, usefulness, device and browser preferences, and location. See How Google knows what language to show in search results and Google Search Central’s explanation that “The search results themselves are not forced to match the display language” in How Google Search handles multilingual searches.

Results Language Filter
The Results Language Filter is the control for filtering web results by selected language. On desktop, Google’s documented path is to run a search, select Tools, open Any language, and choose a language. Google also provides saved language preferences in Search settings. Selecting multiple languages makes one combined filter; it does not produce separate results sets, so select and capture each language separately for a one-language-per-image comparison. Google notes that the filter may not cover some Search features and may miss pages whose language is difficult to identify. Details: Use Results Language Filter for Google Search.
Results region
Set the results region separately in Search settings. Location can also help Google determine which language results are useful, so a display language or language filter is not a substitute for recording the region.

Capture a repeatable set of screenshots
- Write down the comparison design. Decide whether region stays fixed or changes with language. Record the exact query and whether it will remain identical.
- Record a baseline. Note the date and time with time zone, device or browser, viewport dimensions, signed-in state if relevant, display language, results-language filter, and results region.
- Run the query. Use the same query wording for every language-filter capture unless query translation is part of the comparison.
- Apply one results language. On desktop, select Tools > Any language > the language you want. Do not select several languages if you need a distinct screenshot for each language.
- Capture the visible page. Use your computer’s built-in screenshot utility to capture the browser window or a selected area containing the query and results you need. Capture the same viewport area each time where possible. Exact shortcut steps vary by operating system, so use the current instructions for your device.
- Repeat for each language. Change only the intended variable, then save a separate image. For a market comparison, change and record the region deliberately as well.
- Preserve the original. Keep an unedited original. If you need to blur private information or add highlights, make a separate derivative and mark it as edited.
Use a filename that carries the context
A practical pattern is YYYY-MM-DD_region_language_query-device.png, with a sanitized query slug. For example: 2026-10-04_uk_french_brand-name_desktop.png. Keep a small capture log alongside the files if details such as exact time, viewport dimensions, signed-in state, or which variables changed do not fit in the filename.
Interpret what the screenshots show
- A filtered page is not a promise that every visible element uses that language. The filter applies to web results and may not affect all Search features or pages whose language is unclear.
- A translated title or snippet is not proof that the destination page was written in that language. Google can show translated result titles and snippets in supported situations; the destination remains the original page. Label such text as a translated presentation rather than the page’s authored language. See Translated results in Google Search.
- Search pages can vary. Device, query, and language can affect the page’s visual elements and layout. Treat each image as a time- and context-specific observation, not a stable ranking report. Google’s Visual Elements Gallery documents the range of Search result features.
- Keep edits separate from evidence. Google’s Search Guidelines say Search should be shown naturally, without altering the interface or changing suggestions or results. The guidance also addresses educational or instructional print use; it should not be read as blanket permission for every commercial or promotional use.

The page’s buttons are in the wrong language
That is the display language, not necessarily the results-language filter. Set the filter separately through Tools > Any language and record both settings.
Results still appear in another language
Check that the intended language is selected in the Results Language Filter and that you have not selected multiple languages as a combined filter. Some Search features may not be filtered, and Google may be unable to identify the language of some pages.

Different captures show different results
Check the query text, results region, device or viewport, filter, and capture time in your log. Google uses multiple signals, and results pages vary; a screenshot records the page shown at capture time rather than a guaranteed fixed set.
A result looks translated
Distinguish the translated title or snippet from the destination page’s original language. Google’s translated-result feature changes how a result is presented, not the underlying destination page.
