In Python, use Selenium WebDriver to open the page and call driver.save_screenshot("page.png"). That captures the browser’s current window as a PNG—not automatically the entire document. For documentation, first choose the scope you need: the visible viewport, one element, or a full-page image.
Capture a webpage with Selenium in Python
This runnable example creates an output directory, opens a page in Chrome, saves the current window as a PNG, checks Selenium’s return value, and closes the browser even if capture fails. Replace the example URL with the page you are documenting.
from pathlib import Path
from selenium import webdriver
output = Path("artifacts/page.png").resolve()
output.parent.mkdir(parents=True, exist_ok=True)
driver = webdriver.Chrome()
try:
driver.get("https://example.com")
# For dynamic pages, wait for the specific content you need.
saved = driver.save_screenshot(str(output))
if not saved:
raise OSError(f"Could not save screenshot to {output}")
finally:
driver.quit()
Selenium’s Python API documents save_screenshot as saving the current window to a PNG image file. It recommends a full path and a filename ending in .png; the method returns False if an I/O error occurs. See the Selenium Python WebDriver API, version 4.50.0. The code uses Selenium’s documented API; the installed Selenium package and a compatible browser/driver setup are prerequisites.
Choose the screenshot area
| Documentation need | Selenium route | What to account for |
|---|---|---|
| What is visible in the browser window | driver.save_screenshot("page.png") |
Captures the current window, so set its dimensions to match the intended responsive layout. |
| A single component or element | Locate it, then call element.screenshot("element.png") |
The element must be present and located before capture. Selenium’s browser documentation includes an element screenshot example. |
| The entire long document | Firefox’s Python API provides driver.save_full_page_screenshot("page.png") |
This is a Firefox-specific documented method, not a portable default. Check browser and binding support before relying on it. |
For cross-browser scripts, do not treat a full-page method documented for Firefox as universal. Selenium’s Working with windows and tabs documentation shows WebDriver screenshot examples, including element capture. The Firefox WebDriver API documents full-document screenshot methods.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Set the viewport and wait for the right content
The viewport changes responsive breakpoints and therefore the page shown in a screenshot. Set the browser window size before capturing when the documentation needs a specific desktop or mobile layout. Selenium’s Python API exposes window sizing and geometry methods. Chrome’s headless example likewise pairs screenshot capture with an explicit --window-size.
A completed navigation is not proof that client-rendered or asynchronously loaded content is ready. Wait for a page-specific condition—such as the element your documentation needs—before saving. Selenium exposes page-load timeouts, while Chrome’s headless CLI has a --timeout maximum capture delay. These controls do not guarantee that a particular site’s desired content has finished rendering.

Run Selenium headlessly in automation
Headless mode is useful for automated documentation or CI capture. Configure the browser’s headless option when constructing the WebDriver, then navigate, wait for the required page state, and call save_screenshot as in the Python example. Selenium’s browser documentation shows headless options alongside screenshot examples.

chrome --headless --screenshot --window-size=412,892 https://example.com
That command writes screenshot.png in the current working directory. It is Chrome CLI usage, not Selenium WebDriver code. The --window-size argument sets the dimensions used in the example. See Chrome Headless command-line reference.
Make saved documentation images dependable
- Use an explicit path. Create the destination directory before capture, use a
.pngfilename, and consider resolving the path to an absolute path in scripts that run from different working directories. - Check the save result. Raise or log an error if
save_screenshotreturnsFalse, rather than silently treating the image as successful. - Close the driver on every path. Put
driver.quit()in afinallyblock or your test framework’s teardown so browser processes are closed after success or failure. - Verify the artifact. Confirm the file exists, then inspect its dimensions, visible content, and whether it represents the requested scope. Capture APIs do not guarantee that the image matches your documentation intent.
The Python API also documents screenshot output as PNG bytes and Base64, in addition to saving an image to a file. Choose those forms if a later step needs in-memory data rather than a local PNG; consult the API reference for the relevant method and return type.

Troubleshoot common capture problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| No file appears where expected | The script used a different working directory, the parent directory did not exist, or the save encountered an I/O error. | Resolve and print the output path, create its parent directory, and check the method’s Boolean result. |
| The screenshot is blank or misses dynamic content | The page’s required content was not ready when capture ran. | Wait for a page-specific element or condition before capture; do not rely on navigation completion alone. |
| The image has the wrong layout | The browser window dimensions did not match the intended documentation viewport. | Set the window size before navigation or capture and verify the saved image’s dimensions. |
| A full-page method is unavailable | The script is using a browser or language binding without that documented method. | Confirm the browser and binding support. Selenium’s documented full-page Python method is Firefox-specific; use a supported route rather than assuming the method works across browsers. |
| The browser remains running after an exception | Driver cleanup was skipped on an error path. | Call driver.quit() from a finally block or framework teardown. |
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo can return an image or PDF from one GET request. For example, this cURL call saves a WebP screenshot of the target URL:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. It accepts cookie and consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks/CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.
