To capture a long page reliably, first scroll through it in real viewport-sized steps so lazy images and other scroll-triggered content have a chance to load. Then capture the full page and inspect the result. A full-page option alone does not guarantee that off-screen content has loaded.
Why a full-page screenshot can still miss content
A full-page image covers the page’s scrollable document, not just the visible viewport. Playwright’s screenshot guide describes it as capturing a full scrollable page “as if you had a very tall screen and the page could fit it entirely.” That capture mode does not necessarily scroll through the page as a visitor would. As a result, images loaded on scroll, IntersectionObserver callbacks, scroll animations, or virtualized content may not be triggered before capture. A Playwright project issue opened May 21, 2026 discusses this limitation; its proposed behavior should not be taken as proof that automatic scroll-through is available.
The practical fix is a two-stage workflow: trigger content by scrolling, then take the full-page screenshot. Since sites differ in how and when they load content, review the result rather than trusting one fixed delay.
Manual method in Chrome DevTools
- Open the page in Chrome. Open DevTools and enable Device Mode if the screenshot must represent a particular mobile or tablet layout. Set and confirm the intended viewport dimensions before capture.
- Scroll down in viewport-sized or overlapping steps. Pause after each move to give images and other delayed content time to load.
- If the page appends content as you scroll, continue until no new sections appear or you reach the boundary you intend to capture.
- In DevTools, use the full-size screenshot command. Chrome documents this command as capturing content beyond the current viewport.
- Inspect the image for blank image boxes, missing cards or sections, repeated sticky bars, and abrupt height changes. If something is missing, scroll farther or wait longer, then capture again.
Device Mode helps control the responsive viewport, but it does not remove the need to trigger scroll-dependent content first.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Automate the workflow with Playwright
Playwright’s fullPage option captures the full scrollable page. Add a scroll-through phase before it when the page relies on scrolling to reveal content. The example below measures document height, scrolls in viewport increments with a short pause, repeats if the page grows, returns to the top, and captures the page.
const sleep = ms => new Promise(resolve => setTimeout(resolve, ms));
let previousHeight = 0;
let stablePasses = 0;
const maxPasses = 5;
for (let pass = 0; pass < maxPasses; pass++) {
const height = await page.evaluate(() => document.documentElement.scrollHeight);
const viewportHeight = page.viewportSize().height;
for (let y = 0; y < height; y += viewportHeight) {
await page.evaluate(scrollY => window.scrollTo(0, scrollY), y);
await sleep(500);
}
await sleep(500);
const newHeight = await page.evaluate(() => document.documentElement.scrollHeight);
if (newHeight === previousHeight) {
stablePasses++;
} else {
stablePasses = 0;
}
previousHeight = newHeight;
if (stablePasses >= 1) break;
}
await page.evaluate(() => window.scrollTo(0, 0));
await page.screenshot({ path: 'screenshot.png', fullPage: true });
This is a starting workflow, not a universal guarantee. The 500 ms pauses are an example, not a duration prescribed by Playwright; tune them for the site and check the output. Some pages need longer for network activity or image decoding. If a page keeps growing, reaches an infinite feed, or has a defined capture boundary, set an appropriate limit rather than scrolling indefinitely.

Choose output scale deliberately
Playwright’s screenshot settings include a scale choice. CSS scale aims for one output pixel per CSS pixel; device scale can produce more pixels according to the device pixel ratio. Choose based on whether you need layout-sized output or device-resolution detail, then check the actual image dimensions.
Account for unusual page behavior
- Infinite feeds: set a stopping condition such as a known item count or intended boundary; otherwise there may be no natural end.
- Virtualized lists: some interfaces only keep nearby items in the document. A single full-page capture may not include every item that appeared during scrolling; inspect the output and consider capturing sections or specific elements.
- Nested scroll containers: scrolling the window may not trigger content inside an independently scrolling panel. Scroll that container as well if it is part of the capture.
- Sticky elements and animations: inspect for repeated sticky headers or mid-animation states. A full-page image can show artifacts that are not apparent in a normal viewport.
Choose the capture method for the job
| Need | Use | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| One-off manual capture | Chrome DevTools full-size screenshot | Scroll through the page first; set Device Mode viewport dimensions if responsive appearance matters. |
| Repeatable or scripted capture | Playwright with a scroll-through phase and fullPage: true |
Tune waits and stopping conditions, then inspect output dimensions and content. |
| Only a particular component | Playwright element screenshot | Confirm the selected element contains the content you need; element capture is a different scope from a full-page image. |
Troubleshooting missing or incorrect content
- Blank image boxes: the image may load only after scrolling or may still be loading. Scroll to it, allow more time, and capture again.
- A section appears only after the first capture: the page likely needed a scroll event or additional asynchronous work. Repeat the scroll-through phase and verify the second result.
- Lower sections are absent: check whether the page height grew as you scrolled. Continue to the intended boundary, or increase the number of passes for content that is appended asynchronously.
- Items disappear as you move down: the page may virtualize its list, removing off-screen items. Consider capturing specific sections or elements instead of expecting one full-page image to preserve every transient item.
- Sticky bars repeat or appear in the wrong position: inspect the capture at the relevant viewport size and account for sticky behavior; the full-page rendering may not match a normal scroll-by-scroll viewing experience.
- Output is larger or smaller than expected: check Playwright’s screenshot scale and the selected device pixel ratio. CSS scale and device scale can produce different pixel dimensions for the same CSS layout.

ScreenshotNeo can return a page screenshot from one GET request. Its capture workflow accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers say which page verdict applied and whether the request was billed. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents and MCP clients. The service offers 1,000 screenshots per month free with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
