Selenium captures the screenshot; a separate comparison step decides whether it differs from the expected image. For reliable visual checks, capture the same page or element in a repeatable browser environment, wait for the UI to settle, then apply a documented pixel-difference rule and review the diff before changing a baseline.
What Selenium does—and what the comparison must do
A WebDriver screenshot call returns an image of the current browsing context; Selenium does not itself decide whether that image has changed. Your test needs to save or decode the new capture, load the matching baseline, and compare the two with an image-diff library or a visual-testing framework.
Use a driver-level screenshot for the page context, or an element-level screenshot when the assertion concerns one stable component and your Selenium binding and driver support it. Keep the capture scope identical between baseline and current runs.
Build a repeatable comparison workflow
- Choose the checkpoint. Decide whether to compare the current viewport, the full page where your capture method supports it, or a specific element. Give the checkpoint a stable name.
- Capture a baseline. Save a known-good image and associate it with the test name and relevant browser, platform, and viewport context. Images from different configurations may not render identically.
- Stabilize the page. Wait for navigation and application readiness, required content, and fonts. Freeze or disable animations and stabilize time-dependent data. Exclude only known volatile regions that are irrelevant to the check.
- Capture the current image. Use the same capture scope and conditions as the baseline.
- Check dimensions before comparing pixels. If image dimensions differ, investigate viewport, page state, or capture scope. Do not silently resize: that can hide a real geometry change.
- Compare and keep artifacts. Apply the configured comparison rule, save a diff image, and retain the baseline, current image, and diff for diagnosis.
- Review before updating. Determine whether a failure is an intended change, unstable content, an environment mismatch, or a defect. Approve a baseline update only after inspecting the images.
Keep rendering conditions consistent
Differences in operating system or container, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, fonts, viewport, test data, and headless mode can affect rendering. Run baseline and comparison tests in the same environment whenever possible. Playwright’s visual comparison guide puts it plainly: “For consistent screenshots, run tests in the same environment where the baseline screenshots were generated.” Playwright visual comparisons documentation.

Readiness matters too. A page that is still loading a font, changing a timestamp, or animating an element can produce a different image on each run. Playwright’s screenshot assertion repeats captures until consecutive screenshots match before saving the final image, illustrating one way a tool can account for capture stability. In a Selenium workflow, explicitly wait for the application’s expected state and control sources of visual movement.
Control only irrelevant variation
- Wait for a specific element or state that indicates the page is ready; a fixed delay alone may be either too short or unnecessarily long.
- Use test data that remains stable between runs, or freeze variable values such as timestamps where appropriate.
- Stop or neutralize animations if motion is not what the test is meant to verify.
- Mask or hide only known dynamic regions. A broad exclusion can conceal a genuine regression in the very area being tested.
Choose the comparison rule deliberately
| Rule | Best fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Exact pixel match | A tightly controlled renderer where any pixel change matters. | Strict matching can fail on font-edge or platform rendering noise. WebdriverIO documents a zero-tolerance ignoreNothing mode. |
| Pixel threshold or maximum differing pixels | Small rendering variation should be tolerated while meaningful changes remain detectable. | A high tolerance can hide real layout or color changes. Playwright supports a maximum differing pixel count; WebdriverIO exposes tolerance settings. |
| Anti-aliasing allowance | Minor variation at text and shape edges is expected. | Edge-focused allowances can obscure a change concentrated at edges. WebdriverIO says its anti-aliasing preset forgives such pixels and is enabled by default in v10. |
| Filter volatile regions | Dynamic content is irrelevant to the assertion. | Anything filtered out cannot trigger a failure. Playwright supports a screenshot stylesheet for filtering dynamic elements. |
There is no universal mismatch percentage that guarantees perceptually correct results. Keep the selected settings visible in the test configuration, explain why they fit the checkpoint, and calibrate them against representative rendering noise and intentional changes. WebdriverIO documents service-level settings and per-check overrides; its direct Pixelmatch options include threshold and includeAA. Its documentation cautions against mixing direct settings and preset modes in one options object.

Inspect failures and manage baselines safely
A difference is a signal to investigate, not automatic proof of a bug and not permission to replace the expected image. Look at the baseline, actual capture, and diff together. Check whether the changed area is real, whether dimensions and rendering conditions match, and whether dynamic content or incomplete loading explains the result.
Visual frameworks provide explicit baseline workflows. Playwright documents the --update-snapshots flag; WebdriverIO documents update behavior that copies the actual image into the baseline, allowing changed tests to pass. Use such mechanisms only after reviewing the diff. When a UI change is intended, update the baseline with the change review so future failures still have meaning.

Use a visual-testing framework when it helps
A custom Selenium-plus-image-diff workflow can be sufficient for a small number of stable checkpoints. A dedicated visual-testing workflow can help when a team needs organized baselines, comparison reports, or reusable checks. For example, WebdriverIO documents save/check methods and comparison settings, while Playwright documents screenshot assertions and baseline management. These are separate framework workflows; Selenium remains the browser capture layer in the custom approach described here.
Check the documentation for the exact framework version in your project. WebdriverIO Visual Service v10 changed its comparison engine from ResembleJS to Pixelmatch, so mismatch percentages can differ from v9 and older baselines may need review. The WebdriverIO compare-options page labels some features as introduced in v10.1.0; do not assume settings behave identically across versions.

Troubleshoot common mismatches
Every run fails despite no apparent UI change
- Likely cause: Environment drift, such as a different browser, OS/container, font set, viewport, or headless configuration.
- Fix: Compare the baseline’s recorded context with the current run and restore a consistent environment before loosening the diff rule.
The diff changes between repeated runs
- Likely cause: The page is not settled, or it contains animation, changing data, or late-loading resources.
- Fix: Wait for application readiness and fonts; stabilize or exclude only the irrelevant dynamic region.
The comparator reports a size mismatch
- Likely cause: Viewport, scroll/capture scope, responsive layout, or page state differs.
- Fix: Match the intended capture conditions and investigate the geometry change. Avoid resizing one image to force a comparison.
Text edges trigger many small differences
- Likely cause: Anti-aliasing or renderer variation.
- Fix: First align browser and platform. If edge variation is acceptable for this test, use a documented anti-aliasing allowance or a carefully calibrated threshold.
Tests pass but a visible regression remains
- Likely cause: Tolerance is too permissive, or a mask excludes the changed region.
- Fix: Inspect the diff and configuration; reduce tolerance or narrow the excluded region, then verify against known harmless variation.
A framework update changes mismatch percentages
- Likely cause: Version-specific comparison behavior or a changed engine.
- Fix: Check the versioned documentation and review baselines instead of assuming the old threshold has the same meaning.

If you need a screenshot file rather than a Selenium visual assertion, ScreenshotNeo provides a screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request can return PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF; a request for a WebP screenshot looks like this (see the API documentation):
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie/consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks/CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses include X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
