How do I handle screenshot API rate limits in a bulk capture job?
First check the selected provider’s current documentation and account usage. Record its request-rate window, concurrency cap, batch rules, quota and reset schedule, response headers, and error codes. Then dispatch work through a shared queue, limit both request rate and in-flight captures where applicable, and persist each URL’s outcome so the job can resume safely.
Do not assume every HTTP 429 means the same thing. It may indicate temporary throttling or an exhausted account quota; inspect the response body and headers before deciding whether to wait or stop.
What limits should you verify before a bulk run?
There is no universal screenshot API rate limit. Providers use different units and plan allowances, and those values can change. Confirm the values for your own account rather than copying constants from another service.

- Concurrency: the maximum number of simultaneous renders, if separately limited.
- Batch semantics: maximum URLs per batch, whether submissions count as requests, and how per-item captures count against quotas.
- Monthly quota: included successful captures or renders, reset time, and overage behavior.
- Throttle signals: whether the provider sends
Retry-Afterand rate-limit remaining/reset headers, and how to identify quota exhaustion. - Recovery support: batch IDs, status polling, idempotency keys, or lookup methods for uncertain outcomes.
- Client behavior: SDK retry defaults and whether an SDK and your application might retry the same request independently.
For scale context only, published provider examples differ substantially: Screenshot API documents an example free plan of 60 requests per minute and 500 screenshots per month; Screenshot API at screenshot-api.net describes plan examples from 1 to 50 requests per second and monthly quotas from 100 to 100,000; ScreenshotEngine gives plan examples from 5 to 250 requests per minute and 50 to 60,000 screenshots per month. How should you structure dispatch and retries?
Put all work behind a shared rate controller
Represent each target URL as a queue item, or submit a documented batch if the provider offers one. Coordinate workers through one token bucket or paced queue for the same account or API key. If rate and concurrency limits are distinct, enforce both: pacing requests does not necessarily keep simultaneous renders below a separate cap. Independent workers that each assume they own the whole allowance can collectively exceed it.

Back off on temporary throttling
- Classify the response using the provider’s documented error body and headers.
- If it is temporary throttling and
Retry-Afteris valid, wait at least that long, then add a small random jitter so workers do not resume together. - If there is no valid delay, use bounded exponential backoff with jitter. Set both a maximum attempt count and a maximum total retry duration.
- Reduce dispatch rate or concurrency after throttling, then gradually return to the configured level as the queue proceeds without further throttle responses.
- Record the attempt and next eligible retry time so a process restart does not erase the backoff.
Unsuccessful requests can still use rate capacity. OpenAI’s API guide warns specifically of its own API: “Unsuccessful requests contribute to your per-minute limit, so continuously resending a request won’t work.” The engineering lesson is to avoid retry storms, but the exact accounting for a screenshot service must come from that service’s contract. Inspect SDK retry behavior before adding application retries. If both layers retry without coordination, the actual attempt count can multiply unexpectedly.

Stop on quota exhaustion or permanent errors
A monthly-quota error is not a transient burst: waiting a few seconds and retrying will not restore allowance. Stop affected dispatch, inspect the provider’s usage dashboard or API and reset schedule, then wait for the reset or change plan/capacity as appropriate. Likewise, do not endlessly retry malformed requests or authentication and permission failures; correct the request or credentials first. Some APIs use 429 for both throttling and quota exhaustion, so branch on the machine-readable body and headers, not status code alone.
How do you make a bulk job resumable?
Persist one record per logical target, including its current state, attempt count, last error, and result reference. Mark each successful item complete as soon as the result is safely recorded. If a provider offers batch submission and progress tracking, persist the batch ID and reconcile item-level status when resuming rather than submitting the whole batch again. A batch endpoint does not imply unlimited per-item quota or concurrency.

Treat client timeouts as an unknown outcome, not proof of failure: the server may have finished the capture before the response was lost. Before replaying, check a documented job/status endpoint or provider logs. If the API documents idempotency support, use it; otherwise, avoid duplicate work where status can be reconciled.

Should every HTTP 429 be retried?
No. Retry only when the provider identifies temporary throttling. A 429 may instead report exhausted monthly quota, which requires a usage or plan check rather than immediate retries.
Does a batch endpoint avoid rate limits?
Not necessarily. Verify how batch submissions, individual captures, and concurrent renders count under the selected provider’s current terms.
