Live stream captions can come from a platform’s automatic speech recognition (ASR), a caption feed sent by software or a service, or a human CART captioner. The right choice depends on the platform and stream format, language, acceptable delay, destinations, and whether you need human-produced text. Verify captions in the actual player before the event: a setting marked “captions” does not by itself confirm that viewers will see synchronized captions on every destination.
What live captions do—and what they do not guarantee
Captions present the meaningful audio in synchronized text. Accessibility guidance includes identifying speakers and conveying significant sounds, not just transcribing dialogue. Closed captions can be turned on or off in a compatible player; open captions are permanently visible in the video image. The W3C’s WCAG 2.1 Success Criterion 1.2.4 says, “Captions are provided for all live audio content in synchronized media.” Which obligations apply to a particular event depends on its context and jurisdiction; a captioning feature alone does not establish legal compliance.
Live captions have little time for correction. ASR generates text automatically, while Communication Access Realtime Translation (CART) uses a human captioner listening and rendering speech as text, often with stenography or a phonetic keyboard. Human production is a different workflow, not a guarantee of perfect transcription. The platform documentation cited here does not provide a comparable, independently measured accuracy benchmark across services.
Choose the captioning workflow that fits the event

Compare options on more than transcription: correction opportunity, caption-to-audio timing, total stream delay, languages, formats and integration, viewer controls, simulcast coverage, and archive editing or retention.

How captions reach the viewer
Captions must travel from their source into the stream or platform by a compatible method, then be rendered by the destination player. Depending on the workflow, that can mean captions embedded in the video stream, an external feed accepted by the platform, or captions generated by the platform itself. “Supports captions” is not a complete compatibility specification: confirm the input format, number of feeds or tracks, latency, language, destination, and player behavior.
YouTube Live: embedded captions or an external feed
YouTube documents embedded EIA-608/CEA-708 captions and a separate caption-feed workflow using a signed HTTP ingestion URL. For that documented workflow, a stream entry point has one caption feed and YouTube supports one caption track. Listed software or services include Total Eclipse, Case CATalyst, CaptionMaker, and StreamText.Net; check current software support and setup details in YouTube’s live caption requirements.
YouTube recommends an accurate system clock and warns that antivirus software can interfere with captioning software. Treat a successful connection as only one part of the test: verify that captions appear in the intended YouTube player and remain synchronized.

YouTube automatic live captions
YouTube’s documented automatic live captions are English-only, subject to rollout and qualifying-channel availability, and intended for normal-latency streams—not low- or ultra-low-latency streams. Poor audio, unrecognized speech, overlapping speakers, or simultaneous languages can prevent captions from appearing. Confirm current eligibility and limitations in YouTube’s automatic caption help; documented availability is not a guarantee that the feature is enabled for a particular channel.

Live automatic captions do not remain on the video after the event. YouTube generates new automatic captions for the later VOD, and they may differ from the live captions. Review the resulting captions rather than assuming the live output is the final archive transcript.
Microsoft Teams CART
Teams documents an organizer-created CART link that a captioner opens in compatible captioning software through the Teams CART Captions API. Microsoft states: “The CART software you use needs to connect through the Microsoft Teams CART Captions API.” Set up the link before the event and arrange a technical check with the captioner. When CART is enabled, Teams users can switch between CART and automatically generated captions. See Microsoft’s Teams CART guidance for the current workflow.

Google Cloud Live Stream API
Google documents AI-generated captions and translated captions for HLS and DASH live streams. For embedded captions distributed to endpoints, its documentation describes CEA-608 or CEA-708 text streams. Synchronous display reduces the gap between audio and captions but increases end-to-end media latency; this is a real trade-off if audience interaction depends on low delay. Supported language availability depends on location, so check the current matrix when designing the pipeline. See Google Cloud’s caption documentation.
Vimeo live events
Vimeo documents optional automatic closed captions for live events in English, French, Spanish, German, and Brazilian Portuguese, with one selected caption language per event. Its page says Premium and Advanced accounts include two hours of automatic live captioning per year and Enterprise accounts are granted 30 hours per year; the page also says that starting June 1, 2026, live caption hours migrate to AI credits. Because that change date has passed, confirm the current allowance and billing model in the account interface rather than relying on the older hour figures.

Twitch and other destinations
Twitch help material points to adding real-time closed captions through broadcasting software and refers to a Closed Captioning OBS Plugin. Current plugin availability, maintenance, caption sources, and Twitch playback behavior should be confirmed against Twitch’s current help and software documentation before relying on that route. Do not assume a caption track configured for one platform will carry over to another.
Preflight the complete viewer experience
- Choose the caption source. Decide whether the platform’s ASR, a caption feed, a CART captioner, or stream-processing captions fits the language, event stakes, and workflow.
- Confirm the destination’s input requirements. Check accepted ingest method and caption format, feed/track count, signed URL or API steps, supported software, and whether each simulcast endpoint accepts the captions.
- Check timing and language. Verify language availability, stream latency mode, synchronization behavior, and the delay viewers will experience. For Google’s synchronous caption display, weigh improved caption-to-audio timing against higher end-to-end media latency.
- Improve the audio source. Speak clearly into the microphone, reduce background noise, and avoid overlapping speakers. Use the highest-quality suitable certified equipment available; distance from the microphone can reduce caption accuracy. These steps improve conditions but cannot guarantee a particular result.
- Prepare specialist vocabulary. Give a human captioner names and technical terms ahead of time. Where supported, add event vocabulary—for example, Vimeo documents a field for up to 50 words.
- Run an end-to-end test. Use the actual stream endpoint and player. Confirm that captions appear in the selected language, are synchronized, can be turned on or off when expected, and work at every intended destination.
- Check the archive separately. Determine whether live captions are retained, regenerated, or downloadable, and whether they need review or editing after the event. YouTube’s later VOD captions may differ from its live output; Vimeo documents archived captions and WebVTT download.
- Agree on a backup plan. For CART, arrange the link/API handoff and technical check with the captioner in advance. Decide what to do if the caption feed or connection fails, rather than discovering the failure during the event.
Troubleshoot missing, delayed, or incomplete captions
- No YouTube automatic captions: Check whether the channel has access, the stream is normal latency, the speech is English, and the audio is clear. Overlap, poor audio, unsupported speech, and simultaneous languages can block output.
- YouTube external captions do not arrive: Recheck the signed HTTP ingestion workflow, feed/track limits, system clock, and whether antivirus software is interfering. Then verify output in the actual viewer player.
- Captions work on one simulcast destination only: Treat destinations as separate integrations. Vimeo specifically says its automatic captions do not appear at other simulcast destinations; test or configure each endpoint independently.
- Text lags behind speech: Check stream and caption timing settings. Synchronous caption display can reduce the caption/audio gap, but Google documents that it increases end-to-end media latency.
- Words or names are wrong: Improve microphone proximity and audio clarity, reduce noise and cross-talk, and prepare event vocabulary where the service supports it. Review automated archive captions before publishing them as a transcript.
- CART captions are not visible in Teams: Confirm that the organizer-created link was shared with the captioner, the captioning software connects through the Teams CART Captions API, and the viewer is using the compatible Teams experience. Coordinate directly with the captioner on a pre-event technical check.
