How Does Multistreaming Work? The Technology Explained

Multistreaming sends one live program to multiple platforms through local encoder outputs or a cloud relay. Here is how bandwidth, latency, transcoding, and setup differ.

Multistreaming—also called simulcasting—broadcasts the same live program to more than one streaming platform at the same time. Your encoder can send a separate output to each platform, or send one stream to a cloud relay that forwards it to your selected destinations. The first approach uses more of your own upload capacity; the second reduces the number of outgoing feeds from your setup but adds a relay service and another network hop.

What multistreaming does—and what it does not do

A camera, microphone, game, or screen capture is encoded into a stream that can travel over the internet. Multistreaming distributes that same program to multiple platform destinations. YouTube calls this “simulstreaming”; Twitch uses “simulcasting.” YouTube describes streaming the same content across platforms, while Twitch defines simulcasting as broadcasting the same stream to multiple platforms at once.

It does not, by itself, combine viewers into one audience or create a shared chat. Each destination remains its own platform experience, with its own account, moderation, policies, and viewer interface.

Two ways to distribute one live program

Local multistreaming: your setup sends each output

The encoder—software or hardware—sends the stream directly to each platform’s ingest destination. Twitch’s broadcast documentation describes an encoder sending a video signal over the internet to Twitch using RTMP. With multiple destinations, the encoder or related software has to establish the required outputs for those destinations.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

This gives you more direct control over destination-specific settings, but the outputs use your internet connection and may increase encoder configuration or processing demands. The exact load depends on how the software produces the outputs; separate encodes can demand more processing than forwarding the same encoded feed.

Cloud multistreaming: a relay distributes the feed

Your encoder sends one stream to a cloud relay. The relay receives it and forwards it to the selected platforms. YouTube’s cross-platform guidance describes this model as a cloud service receiving one high-quality live stream and distributing it to chosen channels, resolutions, or platforms.

Because your connection sends one feed to the relay rather than an independent feed to every platform, this can reduce your outbound upload requirement and simplify destination setup. It does not remove the need for adequate upload capacity to the relay, correct destination configuration, or compliance with each platform’s rules. Features, supported destinations, limits, and any transcoding options depend on the service and plan.

Local outputs versus a cloud relay

Factor Local outputs Cloud relay
Upload capacity Plan for the sum of the target output bitrates, plus stability headroom. Your setup sends one feed to the relay; the relay forwards it onward, according to the service’s description.
Computer and encoder More outputs can mean more configuration and, depending on the encoder, more processing. Distribution is handled by the relay; the encoder still has to create and upload the source feed.
Control Separate outputs can allow destination-specific configurations, with added setup complexity. Distribution may be simpler, but service features and configuration options vary.
Latency There is no cloud relay hop, but the encoder, network, and destination still affect delivery delay. The relay adds a network hop. Restream says its service adds under two seconds; destination platforms may add their own delay. This is Restream’s service-specific claim, not a general guarantee.
Limits and cost Depends on your setup and any platform requirements. Destination caps, plan features, and pricing vary by service; check current terms before choosing.

How much upload speed does local multistreaming need?

For local outputs, add the target bitrates to estimate the upload capacity they require. For example, YouTube’s guidance uses a 6 Mbps output plus a 4 Mbps output: the combined target is 10 Mbps. YouTube advises aiming for 1.5 to 2 times that combined target for stability, which makes 15–20 Mbps for this example. This is YouTube guidance, not a universal guarantee; actual needs depend on the outputs and connection conditions. See YouTube’s current cross-platform guidance.

Measure upload performance under conditions that resemble the live show, including typical movement and audio. A speed-test result from an idle connection may not reflect performance while other people or devices are using the network. Leave headroom rather than planning to consume the full measured upload rate.

For its own multistreaming service, Restream’s 2024 Help Center guidance says to have at least 10 Mbps of bandwidth and recommends 25 Mbps or higher, especially for Full HD. Those are Restream service recommendations, not requirements for every relay or a substitute for checking the needs of your encoder and destinations. See Restream’s bandwidth guidance.

Multistreaming is not transcoding

Multistreaming distributes a program to multiple destinations. Transcoding takes a source feed and converts it into other feeds, often with different resolutions, frame rates, or bitrates. As the OBS Project explains, those alternate versions can give viewers different quality options, but availability depends on the destination platform. Sending a stream to three platforms does not necessarily create multiple quality versions on each one.

Use each destination’s current encoder guidance when selecting resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and protocol. For YouTube, the current encoder settings guide includes destination-specific recommendations and recommends RTMPS for YouTube Live. Do not assume one bitrate or resolution is right for every platform.

Prepare accounts and destinations before going live

  1. Confirm that every account can go live. YouTube says the channel must be verified and live streaming enabled. Its guidance warns that first-time activation can take at least 24 hours after the request.
  2. Choose the distribution method. Decide whether the encoder will send separate outputs locally or one feed to a cloud relay. Check that your encoder or service supports the destinations you intend to use.
  3. Collect each destination’s connection details. You may need a server or ingest URL and stream key, unless your encoder or service handles the connection for you. Treat stream keys as credentials: do not publish or share them, and replace one if it is exposed.
  4. Check each platform’s current technical requirements. Set resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and protocol for the destination rather than copying one platform’s values to all the others. Consult YouTube’s encoder settings and Twitch’s broadcast documentation where relevant.
  5. Run a realistic test. Check audio and picture at each destination, watch for dropped frames or connection warnings, and verify that your upload has headroom. A private or otherwise suitable test setup can help catch routing and key errors before a public show.
  6. Review platform policies. Check the current rules for every service and any agreement that affects your account. Twitch permits simulcasting under its guidelines, but says the Twitch experience must not be degraded and restricts using Twitch to direct viewers to another live stream in specified ways. Read the Twitch Simulcasting Guidelines FAQ for the current details.

Common problems and what to check

  • One or more destinations fail to connect: Recheck the destination selection, ingest URL, and stream key. Confirm that live streaming is enabled and the account is eligible to broadcast.
  • Local outputs drop frames or disconnect: Compare the sum of output bitrates with the upload capacity available during the show. Reduce output bitrate or resolution where appropriate, reduce competing network use, or consider a relay architecture.
  • The computer struggles while sending several outputs: Check encoder load and whether it is creating multiple separate encodes. Simplify the output setup or use a relay to reduce local distribution work, while remembering that the source still must be encoded and uploaded.
  • One platform looks worse than another: Check that each destination receives settings it supports and that the feed meets its current requirements. Different platform processing and viewer playback conditions can also affect the result.
  • Viewers report delay: A cloud relay can add a network leg, and destination platforms may add further delay. Restream’s under-two-second figure applies to its service claim only; it is not a promise for a complete end-to-end path.
  • The stream is blocked, muted, or removed: Review the affected platform’s current content and live-stream policies. A technically successful connection does not grant permission to rebroadcast content or override platform rules.

Which approach should you choose?

Choose local outputs if you want direct control over each output, have enough upload capacity for their combined bitrates, and can accommodate the configuration and encoder workload. Choose a cloud relay if you want one outbound feed and simpler distribution, or if your local upload capacity is constrained; first check the service’s supported platforms, settings, limits, and terms.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is to keep a YouTube channel live around the clock using uploaded videos, StreamNeo is a different, YouTube-only cloud service: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Any quality up to 4K 60fps streams as uploaded at one price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. This is for uploaded video, not a live camera feed or multistreaming to multiple platforms. Start the free day with StreamNeo.
