Webcast vs. Webinar: What’s the Difference?

A webcast typically focuses on broadcasting to viewers, while a webinar often includes structured participation. The labels overlap, so compare the actual features, access, production needs, and accessibility.

A webcast usually puts the emphasis on broadcasting a presenter-led stream to viewers; a webinar usually means an online seminar or presentation with planned attendee participation, such as Q&A or polls. The distinction is useful, but not a strict rule: platforms use the labels differently, and some webcast-style events still offer interactive features. Check what attendees can actually do, rather than relying on the event’s name.

Webcast vs. webinar at a glance

What to compare Webcast, typically Webinar, typically
Main emphasis Broadcasting a presenter-led stream to viewers. An online seminar or presentation, often with structured attendee participation.
Attendee role Often primarily watching, though some webcast experiences include Q&A or polls. May include planned ways to ask questions, respond to polls, or otherwise participate.
Best starting point Consider it for announcements or presentations where most attendees are there to watch. Consider it for instruction or discussion where attendees need ways to respond or ask questions.
What the label guarantees Nothing universal about audience size or available features. Nothing universal about audience size or available features.

These are practical tendencies, not formal definitions. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration groups “Webinars,” “Web Conferencing,” and “Webcast” among names used for web-based presentation and meeting services, and notes that services vary in their capabilities and delivery methods. FDA: Accessible Web Conferences and Webinar Best Practices

Why the terms overlap

Vendors may use “webcast” to describe a viewing mode within a webinar product, rather than a separate event type. Webex, for example, documents a webinar webcast view and describes how hosts can use features such as Q&A and polls in that view. That is why “webcast means no interaction” is too absolute. Webex: Start and manage a webinar in webcast view

Some providers also say the terms are used interchangeably. Audience size is not a reliable dividing line: the official materials cited here establish no universal numerical threshold. A platform may set its own capacity limits, but those product limits are not definitions of webcast or webinar. webinar.net FAQ · Webex: Compare Webex Webinars and Webex Events (classic)

How to choose the right setup

Start with the attendee experience you need, then confirm that the platform provides it in the event configuration you plan to use.

  1. Decide what attendees should do. If they mainly need to watch a presenter, a broadcast-oriented setup may suit the event. If they need to ask questions, take polls, or participate in a lesson or discussion, verify that those features are available and decide how they will be managed.
  2. Choose the production flow. Consider whether the presenter should lead the session directly or whether a producer should manage a more controlled broadcast. The label alone does not tell you how much production control the platform offers.
  3. Check the event’s scope. A single presentation and a multi-session or multi-day event can call for different tools. Kaltura distinguishes a focused webinar session from a larger virtual event with multiple sessions and room types. Kaltura: Virtual Events, sessions, and room types
  4. Confirm access and registration. Check whether the event will be open, embedded, or gated by registration, and whether attendees can use the selected access route on their devices.
  5. Plan for accessibility and follow-up. Check that attendees can receive presentation materials and communicate with presenters through the provided tools. Decide whether captions, transcripts, and an accessible recording will be available, where applicable.

Accessibility is part of the format decision

A session is not accessible just because it has a webinar or webcast label. The FDA advises organizers to ensure participants can receive the presentation content and communicate with presenters, and to arrange alternate means when an interface prevents someone from accessing content or joining the interaction. Consider the slides, spoken content, interaction tools, and any replay as part of the same attendee experience. FDA accessibility guidance

Webcast, webinar, or continuous YouTube stream?

A live webcast or webinar is an online event; a continuous YouTube stream of uploaded videos is a different use case. StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded recordings or a playlist, not webinar software for hosting attendee interaction. You upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live; StreamNeo loops the content from the cloud, so a computer, OBS, and a home connection do not have to stay on. It supports uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card.
