APITemplate.io’s documented feature here is template-based image generation, not a general-purpose tool for capturing arbitrary webpages as screenshots.
What “screenshots” means with APITemplate.io
APITemplate.io generates images from templates. You supply a template ID and values for named elements in that template; the service renders an image using those values. The reviewed documentation does not establish an endpoint that opens an arbitrary webpage URL in a browser and captures it. If you need that kind of webpage screenshot, use a browser-capture service instead.
For a Python integration, the REST API is the direct route: the documented v2 image endpoint accepts a POST request with an API key in the X-API-KEY header and template overrides in JSON. Successful responses include a download_url. See APITemplate.io’s REST API Reference and image template overview.
Prepare a template and credentials
- Create or select an image template in APITemplate.io and note its template ID.
- Make sure the template contains an element whose name matches each override you intend to send. The example below uses an element named
title. - Obtain an API key and keep it outside your source code. The API uses the
X-API-KEYrequest header. - Install the Python HTTP client if needed:
python -m pip install requests.
The example uses the default API base in the getting-started documentation. That page also lists regional endpoints for the US (default), EU, Australia, and Singapore; use the documented regional base if you need to select a region. See Make Your First API Request.

Generate a template image with Python
Set the environment variables before running the script. Replace the example text with the content you want in your template.
import os
import requests
API_KEY = os.environ["APITEMPLATE_API_KEY"]
TEMPLATE_ID = os.environ["APITEMPLATE_TEMPLATE_ID"]
url = f"https://rest.apitemplate.io/v2/create-image?template_id={TEMPLATE_ID}"
headers = {
"X-API-KEY": API_KEY,
"Content-Type": "application/json",
}
payload = {
"overrides": [
{"name": "title", "text": "Hello from Python"}
]
}
response = requests.post(url, headers=headers, json=payload, timeout=60)
response.raise_for_status()
result = response.json()
print(result["download_url"])
For example, in a POSIX shell, set the variables and run the script like this:

export APITEMPLATE_API_KEY='your_api_key'
export APITEMPLATE_TEMPLATE_ID='your_template_id'
python generate_image.py
The output is the generated image’s download_url. The API documentation shows that field in successful responses; other response fields may also be present. This example prints the URL rather than downloading the image file. Consult the REST API Reference for the current response details and endpoint-specific parameters.
Choose between REST and Direct URL generation
| Route | Request shape | When it fits |
|---|---|---|
| REST API | Authenticated POST with X-API-KEY, a template ID, and JSON overrides |
A Python application needs to submit data programmatically and handle a JSON response. APITemplate.io documents synchronous generation by default and an asynchronous option with webhook notification for larger or batch jobs; confirm the current endpoint-specific parameters before relying on async behavior. REST API Reference |
| Direct URL | GET URL containing a template ID, auth code, and element-property query parameters | You need a generated image URL for an HTML page, email, or Open Graph metadata and the URL-based feature suits the use case. See Direct URL Image Generation and Integrations Overview. |
Common errors and practical fixes
- Missing environment variable: Python raises
KeyErrorwhen either environment variable is unset. SetAPITEMPLATE_API_KEYandAPITEMPLATE_TEMPLATE_IDin the environment where the script runs. - Authentication failure: Check that the API key is valid and sent as
X-API-KEY, rather than placed in the JSON body. Avoid printing or committing the key. - Template or override mismatch: Verify the template ID and ensure every override’s
namematches an element in the template. The sample’stitlevalue works only if the template has an element with that name. - HTTP error:
raise_for_status()surfaces unsuccessful HTTP responses as exceptions. Inspect the status and response details against the current API reference instead of assuming the request succeeded. - Missing
download_url: Do not assume every JSON response has the success shape. Inspect the response body and compare it with the endpoint’s current documented response structure. - Timeout: The sample sets a 60-second client timeout. If a request times out, check network connectivity and the endpoint response; the timeout is a client-side limit in this example, not a published service performance guarantee.
Version and SDK notes
Use the v2 endpoint for a new integration. APITemplate.io’s legacy API reference says v1 is no longer supported and recommends v2; do not copy v1 endpoint examples into a new script. See the legacy API Reference and the current getting-started request.
