Recommended Free Tools
You can capture a webpage without installing or enabling an extension: use a browser’s built-in screenshot tool, developer tools, or your operating system’s screen-capture feature. Firefox documents full-page, visible-area, region, and element captures. Chrome’s documented DevTools route captures a selected area, and it requires DevTools to be docked. If you need an automated screenshot instead of a manual browser capture, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request API.
Choose the capture method that matches what you need
| Need | Try | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Only what is currently visible on screen | Your operating system’s screenshot feature | Captures the screen view; it does not automatically include content below the fold. |
| A selected region in Chrome | Chrome DevTools Command Menu | Drag to select an area; DevTools must be docked. |
| Full page, visible area, region, or an element in Firefox | Firefox screenshot interface or Developer Tools | Firefox documents these capture scopes; the screenshot interface can download an image or copy it to the clipboard. |
| Automated or repeatable captures | ScreenshotNeo API | Send a GET request with the page URL to receive an image or PDF. |
Disabling extensions does not by itself remove browser-native screenshot options. However, a managed-device policy may restrict some routes, and the options differ by browser.
Capture a screenshot in Firefox without an extension
Use Firefox’s built-in screenshot interface
Open the page and use Firefox’s screenshot interface to choose a selected region, a page element identified as you hover, the visible portion, or the full page. You can download the resulting image or copy it to the clipboard. Mozilla also documents keyboard-accessibility controls for the selection interface. See Mozilla’s Firefox Screenshots guide for the current interface details.
Capture the full page or an element with Developer Tools
- Open Developer Tools and open its settings.
- Under “Available Toolbox Buttons,” enable “Take a screenshot of the entire page.”
- Click the screenshot button to save a full-page capture to Downloads.
- To capture a single element instead, open the Inspector, right-click the element in the HTML pane, and choose “Screenshot Node.”
Firefox’s documented console command offers additional control. In the Web Console, enter :screenshot with options such as --fullpage, --selector, --delay, --dpr, --clipboard, --file, or --filename. Check the Firefox Web Console screenshot documentation for syntax and usage. If you save to a filename that already exists, such as test.png, Firefox warns that the earlier image will be overwritten.

Capture a selected area in Chrome
- Open the page in Chrome and open DevTools.
- Press Ctrl+Shift+P on Windows or Linux, or Command+Shift+P on Mac, to open the Command Menu.
- Type
screenshotand select “Capture area screenshot.” - Drag over the part of the page you want to save.
Chrome’s documented area-capture method does not work when DevTools is undocked. Dock DevTools to the browser window and try again. The Chrome documentation cited here verifies the area-capture command; it does not establish a full-page workflow, so use Firefox’s documented full-page options if you need that specific capability. See Chrome DevTools Command Menu documentation.
What to do when Edge blocks screenshots
Microsoft’s DisableScreenshots policy blocks screenshot keyboard shortcuts and extension APIs. Microsoft says Web Capture within Edge or a method outside the browser, such as an operating-system feature or another application, may still work. Whether a route is available depends on the managed-browser setup; check with your organization’s administrator if it remains blocked.
Rank #2
Microsoft lists support for this policy on Windows and macOS from Edge version 77, and Android from version 146; iOS is listed as unsupported. As of Edge version 154, the policy also prevents extensions from attaching the debugger through chrome.debugger.attach(). These are version-sensitive policy details; confirm the current configuration and version in your environment. See Microsoft’s DisableScreenshots policy documentation.
Use an operating-system capture for the visible screen
If you only need the screen as it appears now and browser tools are unavailable, use your operating system’s screenshot feature. This is a practical fallback, not a substitute for full-page capture: it captures the visible screen and does not automatically include the part of the webpage below the fold. Shortcut steps vary by operating system and are not covered here.
If you need a web document rather than a pixel-faithful image, printing or exporting to PDF may be appropriate. A PDF is not the same as a screenshot: page layout and print rendering can differ from the on-screen appearance.
Or skip the browser setup
For a repeatable capture, make one GET request with the page URL. The example below saves a WebP image; replace the sample target URL with the page you want to capture and provide your API key. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request details.

ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners as a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.

Troubleshoot common capture problems
The Chrome area-capture command is unavailable or fails
- DevTools is undocked: Dock it to the browser window; Chrome’s documented area method does not work undocked.
- You need the whole page: The cited Chrome instructions verify area capture, not full-page capture. Use Firefox’s documented full-page screenshot interface or Developer Tools route instead.
The Firefox capture is missing content or overwrites an image
- Content is below the visible area: Choose a full-page capture rather than a visible-area capture.
- You selected an existing output filename: Choose a new filename or deliberately overwrite it; Firefox warns that an existing file such as
test.pngwill be replaced.
Edge shortcuts or extension-based capture are blocked
The device may be managed with the DisableScreenshots policy. Try Edge Web Capture or an operating-system capture if permitted, and ask the administrator to confirm the policy and browser version. If the policy is active, an extension API is not a workaround.
