If a Playwright Python screenshot misses content that appears only after scrolling, scroll the relevant page area first, wait for that site’s content to render, and then take the screenshot. Add full_page=True when you need a tall image of the whole document; it changes how much is captured, but does not itself trigger scroll-dependent loading.
First identify what the screenshot should include
Playwright’s page.screenshot() captures the visible viewport by default. A full-page capture includes the full scrollable document, while a locator screenshot captures a particular element. These are different capture scopes, and none should be confused with triggering a page’s own load-on-scroll behavior. See Playwright’s screenshot guide and element screenshot API documentation.
| Capture | What it includes | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
page.screenshot() |
The current viewport | You want an image of the visible screen. |
page.screenshot(full_page=True) |
The full scrollable document as one tall image | You want a whole-page image after required content has loaded. |
locator.screenshot() |
The matched element as it is currently rendered | You want a component or a particular element state. For a scrollable element, only its currently visible scrolled content is shown. |
If content is missing because it has not been loaded yet, changing capture scope alone will not make it appear. Trigger the page behavior that loads it, then wait for evidence that it rendered.
Scroll to trigger lazy loading or an infinite list
For a page that loads more items as you scroll, bring a meaningful lower-page target into view. Playwright documents this approach for causing an infinite list to load further content. Replace the example locator below with one that makes sense for the page you are capturing.

from playwright.sync_api import sync_playwright
with sync_playwright() as p:
browser = p.chromium.launch()
page = browser.new_page()
page.goto("https://example.com")
page.get_by_text("Footer text").scroll_into_view_if_needed()
# Replace this with a condition for the content your page loads.
page.get_by_text("Expected loaded item").wait_for(state="visible")
page.screenshot(path="page.png", full_page=True)
browser.close()
The wait is deliberately tied to expected page content. A fixed sleep may happen to work on one run, but it is not a reliable general signal that a particular application has finished rendering. Choose a locator, state, or other condition that corresponds to the content your script needs. Playwright’s scrolling guide describes scrolling to a lower target; it does not prescribe one universal post-scroll wait condition.
Scroll the nested container, not just the document
Some pages keep a list or panel inside its own scrollable element. Scrolling the document in that case may leave the nested content untouched. Identify the actual scrolling container and move that element.

Scroll a container with the mouse wheel
container = page.get_by_test_id("scrolling-container")
container.hover()
page.mouse.wheel(0, 500)
# Wait for a page-specific condition before capturing.
page.get_by_text("Expected loaded item").wait_for(state="visible")
container.screenshot(path="panel.png")
Adjust the element’s scroll position directly
container = page.get_by_test_id("scrolling-container")
container.evaluate("e => e.scrollTop += 500")
# Wait for a page-specific condition before capturing.
page.get_by_text("Expected loaded item").wait_for(state="visible")
container.screenshot(path="panel.png")
Use a locator that resolves to the real nested scrolling element. If more than one loading batch is needed, scroll again and wait for the next expected content. For an element screenshot, position the container at the desired state before calling locator.screenshot(). The scrolling guide documents both mouse.wheel() and changing an element’s scrollTop.
Use the right sequence for a full-page screenshot
- Determine the missing region. Decide whether it is below the document viewport or inside a nested scrollable container.
- Trigger loading. Scroll a lower target into view, wheel-scroll, or adjust the correct container’s
scrollTop. - Wait for the actual rendered result. Use a page-specific condition, such as the expected item becoming visible.
- Choose the capture scope. Use
page.screenshot(full_page=True)for the whole document, orlocator.screenshot()for one element at its current state. - Repeat if necessary. If the site loads content in batches, continue scrolling and waiting until the region you need is present.
A full-page image is useful for a tall document, but the option is not a replacement for scrolling to trigger application behavior. This distinction follows the documented screenshot and scrolling behaviors; individual sites may implement loading differently.

Async Playwright Python equivalent
Use the asynchronous API when it matches the event-loop model of your project. The operation order is the same: navigate, scroll, wait for the site-specific condition, then capture.
import asyncio
from playwright.async_api import async_playwright
async def main():
async with async_playwright() as p:
browser = await p.chromium.launch()
page = await browser.new_page()
await page.goto("https://example.com")
await page.get_by_text("Footer text").scroll_into_view_if_needed()
# Replace this with a condition for the content your page loads.
await page.get_by_text("Expected loaded item").wait_for(state="visible")
await page.screenshot(path="page.png", full_page=True)
await browser.close()
asyncio.run(main())
Playwright Python provides both synchronous and asynchronous APIs; use the one that fits the surrounding application. Its library guide shows both styles.

Pytest failure screenshots are a separate setting
If you mean screenshots automatically attached to failed Playwright pytest tests, the pytest plugin has a --full-page-screenshot option, and screenshot capture must be enabled. That option governs automatic failure artifacts; for a direct API capture, set full_page=True on the screenshot call. See the Playwright pytest plugin reference.
Troubleshoot screenshots that still omit content
- Only the visible screen appears: The call is using the default viewport capture. Pass
full_page=Trueif the desired output is the entire document. - The full-page image still lacks later items: The site may not have loaded them yet. Scroll to a lower target, wait for the expected content, and repeat if the list loads in batches.
- Scrolling the page has no effect: Check whether the content sits in a nested scrollable panel. Use the panel’s locator with
hover()andmouse.wheel(), or adjust that element’sscrollTop. - The element screenshot shows only part of a panel: A locator screenshot captures the element’s current rendered view. Scroll the panel to the needed position before taking it.
- The script captures too soon: Replace an arbitrary delay with a condition tied to the content you need, for example waiting until the expected item is visible.
- A locator does not trigger the expected scroll: Make sure it identifies a real lower-page target or the actual scrolling container. Playwright can scroll automatically before actions such as clicking, but explicit scrolling helps when the script needs to trigger loading or control screenshot position.
