Use Playwright Java’s Page.setViewportSize(width, height) to resize a page, then call Page.screenshot(...) to save an image at each width. Set a consistent height and capture scale, and, when the site responds to its initial viewport, resize before navigating so each screenshot reflects the intended layout from page load.
Capture one screenshot per viewport width
The example below opens Chromium, visits the same URL at three widths, and saves a viewport screenshot for each. It uses Java’s Path API for filenames and closes the context and browser explicitly. Add the Playwright Java dependency and browser installation appropriate to your project before running it; check the official Playwright Java screenshot guide and Page API for details applicable to your dependency version.
import com.microsoft.playwright.Browser;
import com.microsoft.playwright.BrowserContext;
import com.microsoft.playwright.Page;
import com.microsoft.playwright.Playwright;
import java.nio.file.Paths;
public class ResponsiveScreenshots {
public static void main(String[] args) {
String url = args.length > 0 ? args[0] : "https://example.com";
int[] widths = {375, 768, 1280};
int height = 900;
try (Playwright playwright = Playwright.create()) {
Browser browser = playwright.chromium().launch();
BrowserContext context = browser.newContext();
Page page = context.newPage();
for (int width : widths) {
page.setViewportSize(width, height);
page.navigate(url);
// Replace or supplement this with a page-specific readiness condition
// if the site loads important content asynchronously.
page.screenshot(new Page.ScreenshotOptions()
.setPath(Paths.get("page-" + width + ".png")));
}
context.close();
browser.close();
}
}
}
Save it as ResponsiveScreenshots.java, then run it through your Java project’s normal build and execution setup, passing an optional target URL as the first argument. The files are written to the process working directory as page-375.png, page-768.png, and page-1280.png. The widths and 900-pixel height are examples, not required values.
Wait for the page state you need
page.navigate(url) completes according to its navigation wait condition; that does not guarantee that every application-specific asynchronous update, image, animation, or client-rendered component has settled. For reliable captures, wait for a meaningful signal such as a known element becoming visible, or for the application to expose a ready state. The right condition depends on the page; there is no universal screenshot-ready wait in the reviewed screenshot guidance.

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
For a width-sensitive page, setting the viewport before navigation lets the site see the target dimensions during its initial response and rendering. The loop does this on every iteration. If the page’s state is intentionally meant to persist while resizing, navigate once and resize repeatedly instead—but be aware that this tests a resize after load rather than the layout produced by a fresh visit at each width.
Choose viewport or full-page capture
Page.screenshot(...) captures the visible viewport by default. This is usually the right choice for checking how a layout fits on a screen of a particular width and height. To capture the whole scrollable document, set setFullPage(true):
page.screenshot(new Page.ScreenshotOptions()
.setPath(Paths.get("page-full-" + width + ".png"))
.setFullPage(true));
A full-page image represents the document as if shown on a very tall screen; it is useful for a complete page record, but does not show how much content fits in the fixed-height viewport. Keep the capture type consistent across widths if the images are intended for comparison.

Keep comparisons controlled
If the question is what changes when width changes, vary width and hold other meaningful conditions steady. Otherwise a difference between images may come from something besides responsive layout.
- Viewport height: use the same height for every width unless height is also under test.
- Browser engine and version: use the same engine and project setup throughout a comparison.
- Page state: use the same URL, data, login state, and readiness condition. Dynamic content can change between captures.
- Device scale factor and screenshot scale: keep them consistent so output dimensions and rasterization do not obscure layout changes.
- Emulation settings: decide whether you are testing just a viewport width or a mobile-device configuration, and record that distinction.
Viewport width alone does not reproduce every physical-device behavior. Playwright contexts can also configure device scale factor, touch, mobile behavior, screen size, and user agent. Use these controls when the comparison is about device emulation, not merely responsive breakpoints. See the Playwright Java emulation guide.
Configure viewport at page or context level
Use page-level resizing when one page will be captured at a sequence of widths. Use context-level settings when pages in a context should share the same viewport and emulation configuration.

Resize a page
page.setViewportSize(width, height) changes the viewport for that page. The Page API documents that this also resets screen size. If a test depends on window.screen dimensions, set the screen size as well rather than assuming it follows the viewport.
Set a context viewport
Set a viewport when creating a context to give its pages a shared initial viewport:

Context configuration is useful for independent test cases with fixed settings; separate contexts per width are a practical way to isolate state. Choose image dimensions and screenshot options
Screenshot scale controls the relationship between CSS pixels and image pixels. CSS scale produces one image pixel per CSS pixel; device scale uses device pixels and can produce a larger image in a high-DPI context. For layout comparisons, use one scale consistently and choose it based on whether you care about CSS layout dimensions or device-resolution output.
Playwright’s screenshot options also cover output format, quality, masking, animation handling, and injected styles. Select these only when they serve the capture’s purpose—for example, masking variable account data for a visual comparison. Screenshots can be saved directly to a path or returned as bytes for subsequent processing. The screenshot guide and Locator API document page and element screenshot approaches.

- The layout looks like the wrong breakpoint: confirm that
setViewportSizeruns before navigation when initial rendering matters, and verify the requested width in the browser context. - Images or content are missing: navigation may have finished before the application did. Wait for a page-specific element or readiness signal before capturing.
- The images differ in more than layout: check whether page data, animations, time, user state, browser engine, height, device scale, or screenshot scale changed.
- Image pixel dimensions are larger than expected: inspect the context device scale factor and screenshot scale; device-pixel output can exceed CSS-pixel dimensions on high-DPI configurations.
- Screen-dependent behavior is inconsistent: page viewport resizing resets screen size. Configure screen dimensions separately if the test relies on them.
- Browser resources remain open: close a manually created context before closing its browser, as in the example. Closing the Playwright instance also releases its managed resources.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need an image from each target URL without managing a local browser, ScreenshotNeo provides a screenshot API and MCP server. Its API takes a URL and can return PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF; the parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work. For available options, see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation.
