The right alternative depends on what you mean by “BrowserStack Screenshots.” BrowserStack’s current documentation distinguishes Percy on Web, a standalone visual-testing and review product, from Percy on Automate, which captures screenshots during BrowserStack Automate sessions and requires both Percy and Automate licenses. For code-first comparisons in a Playwright suite, start with Playwright Test; for Storybook-centered component review, evaluate Chromatic; for hosted browser and device coverage alongside visual testing, consider TestMu AI (formerly LambdaTest). If you need an API for capturing website screenshots rather than a visual-regression testing platform, try ScreenshotNeo.
What counts as a BrowserStack Screenshots alternative?
BrowserStack’s current documentation names its visual-testing product Percy and describes two different workflows. They overlap in purpose but are not interchangeable with every product called a screenshot tool.
- Percy on Web: standalone visual testing and review. Percy manages browser selection in project settings. Its documented integrations include tools such as Playwright, Cypress, Selenium, Puppeteer and Storybook.
- Percy on Automate: captures a screenshot during a BrowserStack Automate session. The browser and capabilities are specified through the Automate configuration, and the workflow requires both Percy and Automate licenses.
Percy Web captures DOM snapshots and assets, but its documentation says it cannot capture authenticated assets. In Automate, authenticated assets can be captured when the test uses an authenticated session. These distinctions matter if your team needs private-page coverage, control over the browser matrix, or a standalone review workflow. See BrowserStack’s Percy overview for the product boundaries and supported integrations.
There is a second distinction: a screenshot API returns an image or PDF from a URL, while visual-regression tools generally fit screenshots into a test, baseline, comparison and review workflow. If your need is only to generate website screenshots programmatically, ScreenshotNeo is the alternative to try first: it provides a one-request screenshot API, removes known consent banners and popups before capture, and bills only clean shots.

1. ScreenshotNeo for screenshot API captures
For developers who need to fetch a website screenshot by API rather than manage visual-test baselines, ScreenshotNeo is the first alternative to try. It is a screenshot API and MCP server, not a like-for-like Percy visual-review system. A single GET request can return PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF. Its cleanup can accept cookie/consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits cost nothing, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers.
Its MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients. It is useful when the deliverable is an image or PDF, or when an agent needs to capture a page; it does not replace a Percy-style baseline approval workflow.

2. Playwright Test for code-first screenshot assertions
If your team already runs Playwright Test and wants screenshot baselines alongside its tests, Playwright provides toHaveScreenshot(). On first execution it generates reference screenshots; later runs compare against them. The guide recommends storing snapshot files with tests and committing and reviewing them. This is a direct fit for teams comfortable owning the baseline and comparison workflow in code. The documentation does not establish that Playwright itself supplies a hosted approval interface or real-device cloud.
Playwright warns that rendering can vary with host operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source and headless mode. Keep the baseline-generation and comparison environment consistent—ideally the same environment in CI—to reduce environment-driven differences. See the Playwright visual comparisons guide.
3. Chromatic for Storybook-centered component review
Chromatic positions itself as a frontend UI testing and review platform associated with the Storybook team. Its official product page lists visual, interaction and accessibility testing, and its ecosystem includes Storybook, Playwright and Cypress. It is a relevant candidate when teams want component-oriented review around stories rather than only whole-page captures. Validate framework support, browser coverage, review workflow and plan limits against current documentation before treating it as equivalent to Percy for a particular project. See Chromatic’s product information.
4. TestMu AI for hosted browser and device testing
TestMu AI, formerly LambdaTest, states that the rebrand took effect on January 12, 2026. The company says its former LambdaTest capabilities remain available under the new brand and lists cross-browser testing, a real-device cloud and SmartUI visual testing. Consider it when hosted browser/device coverage is a central requirement in addition to visual testing. Those descriptions are vendor-stated feature claims, not independent performance comparisons. See TestMu AI.

5. Applitools as another candidate to verify
Applitools is another named visual-testing option. Its comparison material names integrations including Selenium, Cypress, Playwright, Appium and Storybook, but detailed current capabilities, pricing and India-specific terms are not established here. Check its current primary documentation for the exact framework, browser/device coverage, review workflow and commercial terms your team needs before shortlisting it further.
How should an Indian web team choose?
Start from the work your screenshots need to support, then verify the operational and commercial details directly with each vendor. Indian pricing, taxes, payment methods, data residency, support hours and procurement terms have not been established for these options; do not assume a displayed price converts to your total INR cost or that a vendor meets a local hosting requirement.

Choose by test scope and browser execution
- Page or site rendering: decide whether you need complete pages, selected page regions, or screenshots embedded in functional tests.
- Component review: if the team’s source of truth is Storybook, trial Chromatic against representative stories.
- Code-owned baselines: if Playwright is already your test stack and you can hold the execution environment steady, evaluate its assertions first.
- Managed browser/device matrix: evaluate TestMu AI and Percy on Automate where the required coverage depends on hosted browser or device combinations.
- Standalone Percy workflow: compare Percy on Web where a separate visual review platform is desired; verify whether its authenticated-asset limitation affects your pages.
- Screenshot delivery only: use an API such as ScreenshotNeo when the requirement is to return an image/PDF, rather than to approve visual baselines.
Compare the review and integration burden
For each candidate, check where baselines are stored, how diffs are reviewed and approved, how changes group in CI, and whether the tool fits the team’s language and current Playwright, Cypress, Selenium or Storybook setup. A tool that technically captures the page may still create substantial review work if its browser environment differs from production or developers cannot easily own baseline changes.
Check the actual cost unit and local procurement terms
Ask how usage is counted, what is included in the plan, when overages apply, what currency and taxes are charged, which payment methods are accepted, and whether data residency or support-hour requirements can be met. For Percy, the vendor’s billing documentation counts screenshots by page or component, browser and responsive width: its example says two pages across two browsers and three widths total twelve screenshots, shown as two snapshots. A “snapshot” display therefore need not mean one billable screenshot. Verify current plan terms because quotas and overage rules can change. See Percy billing documentation.

Run a comparable short trial
- Choose a representative set of pages or components, including at least one state with dynamic content and any authenticated page the team must test.
- Run the same cases through the candidate workflow and record setup effort, environment constraints and the number of diffs needing human review.
- Check the exact browser/device matrix, baseline-update process, CI behavior and billed unit in the vendor’s current documentation or account.
- Ask procurement and security owners to confirm INR or converted pricing, taxes, payment rails, data residency, support hours and contract terms directly with vendors.
This is an evaluation method, not a claim that these products have been tested side by side. No independently published adoption or performance study is established here, so there is no evidence-based market-share or speed ranking to report.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What does Percy’s screenshot allowance mean?
BrowserStack’s current Percy pricing material observed in 2026 describes 5,000 free monthly screenshots and paid allowances with overage billing. Its billing documentation says usage is counted per page or component, browser and responsive width. These are vendor-published quantities and terms, not an independent comparison, and should be checked on the live plan pages before purchase. Do not confuse web Percy’s allowance with App Percy: BrowserStack documentation observed in 2026 describes 1,000 free monthly screenshots for mobile app visual testing, a separate product allocation. See Percy pricing.
For Indian teams, the cited material does not establish a final local cost: confirm currency conversion, GST or other applicable taxes, payment methods and contract terms with the vendor. A listed allowance alone does not settle whether a plan fits your mix of pages, browsers and responsive widths.
Or skip the browser setup
If your requirement is to capture a clean page image rather than maintain visual-regression baselines, ScreenshotNeo returns a screenshot from one GET request. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a free alternative to Percy?
Playwright Test can create and compare screenshot baselines in your own test workflow. ScreenshotNeo also has a free plan with 1,000 screenshots a month and no card, but it is a screenshot API rather than a Percy-style visual review service.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Can Playwright compare screenshots?
Yes. Playwright Test’s toHaveScreenshot() creates a reference on the first run and compares later runs against it. Keep the browser and execution environment consistent to limit rendering differences.
Which visual testing tool works with Storybook?
Chromatic is the most directly Storybook-centered option among those covered here. Percy also lists Storybook among its integrations; verify the current integration and review requirements for your project.
Is Percy on Web the same as Percy on Automate?
No. Percy on Web is standalone visual testing with browser selection managed in Percy; Percy on Automate captures during an Automate session and requires both Percy and Automate licenses.
