The standard WebDriver screenshot is for the current browsing context; it should not be assumed to capture the entire scrollable page. JPEG is lossy, so use PNG when preserving sharp text and interface edges matters more than producing a JPEG.
Capture a page and write it as JPEG
This Java pattern opens a URL in Chrome, captures the current browsing context, decodes Selenium’s temporary screenshot file, and writes page.jpg in the process’s working directory. It follows Selenium’s screenshot API and Java’s ImageIO API; it is an implementation example, not a claim of testing against every Selenium and browser version.

}Before running it, make Selenium’s Java bindings available to the project and configure Chrome and its WebDriver according to the Selenium setup used in your environment. This example does not pin a Selenium or browser version because compatibility depends on the versions you run.
What each step does
driver.get(...)navigates to the target URL. If the site renders content asynchronously, ensure the content you need is ready before taking the screenshot.getScreenshotAs(OutputType.FILE)asks Selenium for screenshot data in a temporary file. Process or copy it promptly rather than treating its path as permanent storage.ImageIO.read(...)decodes that file into aBufferedImage. The null check catches data that ImageIO could not decode.ImageIO.write(image, "jpg", ...)selects the JPEG encoder and writes the output file. Check its boolean result: it returnsfalseif no suitable writer is available. Write failures can also raiseIOException.- The
finallyblock closes the browser even if capture or conversion fails.
What Selenium captures: viewport or full page?
Do not treat the ordinary TakesScreenshot call as a portable full-page capture. Selenium describes the screenshot in terms of the current browsing context, and behavior for capturing beyond the visible area is not guaranteed across browser and driver combinations.

For Firefox, Selenium’s Java API separately exposes FirefoxDriver.getFullPageScreenshotAs(OutputType<X>) through HasFullPageScreenshot. That is a browser-specific full-page option, not a general WebDriver guarantee. If you use it, confirm that your Selenium and Firefox setup supports the API.
Selenium’s DevTools bindings also include versioned screenshot APIs; a binding for protocol v122 / Selenium 4.19.0 documents Page.captureScreenshot and JPEG as a format. Treat that as a version-specific route: check that the binding matches the browser and Selenium versions in your project rather than assuming it works with any combination.

JPEG quality, transparency, and when to choose PNG
JPEG is lossy. Compression can soften small text, icons, and sharp UI edges, so it is a poor choice when the screenshot must preserve the rendered pixels closely. Oracle’s Java tutorial characterizes JPEG as unsuitable for text and screenshots where the original must be preserved exactly, and describes PNG as lossless with translucency support. Choose PNG when fidelity or transparency matters; choose JPEG when a receiving system requires it or its compression trade-off suits your use.
JPEG cannot preserve transparent pixels. If your image contains transparency, composite it against a chosen opaque background before encoding. The Java code above writes the decoded image directly and does not select a background for transparent areas.

Common problems and fixes
- The output file is missing or empty: confirm the process can write to its working directory and inspect the return value from
ImageIO.write. Afalseresult means no suitable JPEG writer was found; anIOExceptionindicates a write failure. ImageIO.readreturns null: the screenshot data could not be decoded as an image. Check that Selenium returned a usable file and that it was not removed or replaced before decoding.- The screenshot cuts off the page: the standard screenshot is not a cross-browser promise of full-document capture. Use a supported browser-specific full-page API, or capture only the portion required by your task.
- Text looks blurred: that is a consequence of JPEG’s lossy encoding. Save as PNG if sharp text and interface edges are more important than JPEG output.
- Content is absent from the capture: the screenshot reflects what has rendered at capture time. Wait for the needed content before capturing; support for lazy-loaded images or dynamic page behavior is not established uniformly across browser and driver versions.

Can Selenium save a screenshot directly as a JPEG file?
The usual Java flow captures screenshot data first, then uses ImageIO to encode it as JPEG; the example above shows that conversion.
