To preserve a meaningful view while dynamic content changes, first decide what must stay fixed: the same pixel offset, the same content item, or the reader’s current view while content loads above it. Use the browser’s native scroll anchoring for ordinary layout shifts, history restoration for back/forward navigation, or application-managed restoration when you need to keep a specific item in view. A capture should wait for the relevant page changes to finish; none of these mechanisms alone guarantees that a dynamic page is ready to capture.
Choose what “preserve the position” means
These goals are different, and using the wrong one can produce a capture that is technically at the same offset but shows different content.
- Same document coordinate: restore an exact scroll offset, such as
scrollYfor the document orscrollTopfor a nested scroller. - Same content item: keep a particular heading, post, or other identified element at the same relative position in its scroll container. This is usually more robust when content is inserted or resized above it.
- Stable current view: let the browser compensate when layout changes outside the viewport, so the point being read stays visible.
The platform APIs provide useful primitives, but they do not prescribe a universal capture algorithm. The right invariant and the signal that content is ready are specific to your application and page.
Which technique should you use?
| Technique | Best suited to | Main control | Limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| History restoration | Returning to a page through browser back/forward navigation | history.scrollRestoration |
Does not make a dynamic page ready for capture. MDN: History scroll restoration |
| CSS scroll anchoring | Keeping the visible area stable as content outside the viewport changes | Browser-selected anchor; overflow-anchor opt-out |
Support varies, and browser suppression rules or opt-outs can prevent anchoring. MDN: Scroll anchoring overview |
| Application-managed restoration | Keeping a chosen content item or custom position through app-controlled updates | Save an item identifier and relative position, or a coordinate, then restore it | You must choose the semantic anchor and determine when to restore it. |
ResizeObserver-assisted response |
Responding to size changes in known elements | Observe relevant element sizes, then schedule application logic | A size notification does not mean all page activity has finished; careless callback writes can cause repeated resize cycles. MDN: Resize Observer API |
Preserve position in an application
1. Identify the actual scrolling box
The page may scroll in the document or in a nested element with its own scrolling. Read and restore the position on that actual scroller; changing the document’s position will not restore a nested panel.

2. Save the right invariant
For exact coordinate fidelity, save the relevant scroll offset. If content may be inserted or resized above the target and the same item must remain visible, save a stable identifier for that item and its position relative to the scroll container. After the relevant update, find the item again and restore that relationship. This item-based approach is engineering guidance, not a behavior mandated by the browser APIs.
3. Leave native history restoration alone unless you take ownership
For browser session-history navigation, history.scrollRestoration defaults to auto, which allows the browser to restore the location. Set it to manual only when your application implements and intends to own restoration; otherwise you may disable the behavior users expect. The History API reference documents the property and its values.
4. Allow scroll anchoring to handle ordinary layout shifts
CSS scroll anchoring attempts to compensate for changes outside the viewport. Avoid disabling it unless a region needs different behavior. overflow-anchor: none opts a container or region out, and exclusions can affect descendants, so scope the rule deliberately. See MDN’s CSS scroll anchoring reference.

5. Use resize observations as a signal, not a completion test
ResizeObserver reports changes to an observed element’s content or border-box size. Use its callback to schedule a restoration decision for relevant content, not as proof that every image, script, or other page activity has settled. If callback writes change the observed size, they can trigger repeated resize cycles; avoid self-triggering writes or defer intentional changes with requestAnimationFrame. Details are in the Resize Observer API documentation.
6. Capture after the changes that matter
Wait for a page-specific completion signal, such as the relevant content update or layout change finishing, if your capture workflow exposes one. There is no general “page is settled” test established by these browser primitives. A fixed delay may be insufficient on slow or variable pages, so base readiness on the content your capture actually needs.
Browser support and testing
Scroll anchoring compatibility is a moving target. MDN’s overview reports it as newly available across the latest devices and browser versions since September 2026, while noting older devices may not support it. Test the actual browser and device versions used by your capture workflow rather than assuming identical behavior everywhere. MDN’s compatibility notes are the relevant reference.

- Test the document scroller and any nested scrollers separately.
- Test insertions and resizes above the viewport, since those can change the relationship between the viewport and the content.
- Check whether application CSS opts a region out with
overflow-anchor: none. - Test history navigation separately from a fresh capture; history restoration and capture readiness are different concerns.
Troubleshooting
The page returns to the top after content loads
Check whether the application replaces or remounts the scrolling container, resets its offset, or sets history.scrollRestoration to manual without implementing restoration. Confirm that you are reading and writing the actual scroller.
The offset is restored, but the wrong content is visible
A raw pixel coordinate cannot preserve the same content when layout above it changes. Store a stable item identity and its position relative to the scroll container, then restore that relationship after the relevant update.
The visible area jumps despite scroll anchoring
Check target-browser support, suppression conditions, and whether the relevant container or an ancestor has opted out using overflow-anchor: none. If you need deterministic item placement, use application-managed restoration instead.

A ResizeObserver handler repeatedly fires
Inspect writes in the observer callback. If a write changes the dimensions being observed, it can cause another notification and a resize loop. Avoid the self-triggering change or defer an intentional layout change with requestAnimationFrame.
The capture still shows an intermediate layout
Position preservation does not establish that the page has finished changing. Wait for a page-specific readiness condition tied to the content or layout relevant to the capture; a resize notification alone is not a universal completion signal.

ScreenshotNeo can return a page screenshot or PDF from one request, with options for full-page capture, waiting for a selector, delay or network idle, and custom JavaScript. Those options can help when you control the capture request, but a screenshot API does not remove the need to decide what “same position” means for a page that changes during capture. Frequently Asked Questions
Does ResizeObserver tell me when a page is fully loaded?
No. It reports changes to observed element sizes; it does not establish that all dynamic page activity is complete.
Should I disable scroll anchoring when capturing a page?
Not by default. Keep it enabled for ordinary layout shifts unless the page’s behavior requires an opt-out, and test the target browsers.
