First identify what the directory calls a “website thumbnail.” A screenshot fetched from a listing’s website URL, an uploaded listing photo or logo, and a cached directory page are different things—and each needs a different fix. Regenerate WordPress image thumbnails only when the uploaded image’s size derivatives are stale or missing; it will not, by itself, recapture a remote website.
Identify which image needs refreshing
Open the affected listing and determine where its card image comes from. Check another listing too: if only one is wrong, the issue may be that listing’s source or selection; if many are wrong, investigate shared field, image-size, template, or cache settings.
- Remote website screenshot: A preview captured from the listing’s website URL. Check the directory plugin’s URL or screenshot field and how that plugin refreshes its remote captures.
- Uploaded listing image or logo: Check the listing’s uploaded files, featured-image order, and image-display settings.
- Old page or image response: If the source itself is current but the directory still displays old content, investigate page, server/CDN, and browser caches.
These are separate layers. A thumbnail-regeneration tool rebuilds image-size derivatives; clearing a cache removes stored responses. Neither necessarily changes an incorrect source image or recaptures an external website.
Refresh an uploaded listing image
Check the listing’s selected image
In GeoDirectory, images can be uploaded through the frontend or backend listing uploader. The first uploaded image is treated as the featured image, and images can be reordered by drag and drop. Make the intended image first if the card uses the featured image. Also check whether the card is configured to show a company logo, a single image, a slider, or a gallery.

GeoDirectory documents fallback image order as company logo, first or featured uploaded image, category default listing image, custom post type default image, then archive default image. If a placeholder or unexpected image appears, inspect the listing and each applicable fallback rather than regenerating every image on the site. GeoDirectory’s documentation describes its listing-image controls in GD > Post Images.
Regenerate image-size derivatives when the source is right
If the uploaded source image is correct but the displayed size is missing, stale, or blurry—often after changing a theme or image dimensions—regenerate the affected media thumbnails. WordPress.org’s Regenerate Thumbnails plugin can rebuild sizes for one or more Media Library images. Use it for derivative problems, not as a presumed way to refresh a remote website screenshot.

GeoDirectory uses image sizes configured in WordPress Media settings and states that it does not process uploaded images itself; WordPress or other plugins handle image processing. Check which size the directory card requests and whether the relevant derivative exists. Its changelog records: “Tool added to regenerate thumbnails for the post images – ADDED.” The precise location of that tool can vary by installed version, so check the controls available on your site rather than assuming a menu path.
Refresh a screenshot fetched from a website URL
For a remote screenshot, verify the listing’s URL field and the plugin’s screenshot configuration first. GeoDirectory’s documentation describes screenshot generation for a URL field by appending _screenshot to the field name—for example, website_screenshot. Confirm the actual field name and listing data before treating the problem as an image-size issue. See the GeoDirectory custom fields documentation.

GeoDirectory’s changelog says its Post Images widget can generate screenshots of URL fields this way. That does not establish a universal “refresh now” button or a recapture schedule. Nor does regenerating WordPress media thumbnails necessarily recapture a remote page. Check the installed plugin version and its current support documentation for the available recapture workflow. If the stored screenshot remains stale, ask the plugin’s support team how that version handles URL screenshots.
Clear caches after correcting the source
If the source image or screenshot is correct but the listing page still shows an older version, clear the cache layers that apply to your site. Start with the cache plugin, then clear any host or server cache and CDN cache if configured. Finally, reload the listing and archive in a private browser window or clear the browser cache. A cache purge does not repair a wrong field, image selection, or derivative, so correct that first.

For WP Super Cache, GeoDirectory gives this example path: WordPress → Settings → WP Super Cache → Delete Cache. Other plugins and hosts use different controls. GeoDirectory advises checking how to clear plugin, server, and browser caches; if the host manages server caching, contact the host. Its guidance is at GeoDirectory caching and clearing cache.

- Open the listing and directory archive after cache clearing.
- Check the image source URL or screenshot field output. If it is wrong, correct the listing URL, uploaded image, field setup, or fallback source.
- If the source is correct but the card is wrong, inspect the archive template’s image element and selected image size. GeoDirectory’s performance guidance notes that an archive item can use GD Post Meta for a single image with the image set to thumbnail; that is a display choice, not a screenshot refresh. - If only the cached page is old, purge the applicable cache layer and retest.
