If Telegram sends your link as plain text instead of showing a preview, check the exact URL, the page’s public metadata and image, and whether Telegram’s crawler can reach them. A browser loading the page successfully is not enough to prove the crawler received the same response. If the fetch and metadata look healthy but Telegram still shows no preview, site-side changes may not resolve it; record the evidence and report the behavior without assuming a particular Telegram cache problem.
Start with the exact link and Telegram message
- Confirm the message contains the intended public
https://URL. Check the composing or sending flow to make sure link previews have not been disabled. - Test the exact form recipients use: the root URL, a specific path, and any query string may behave differently.
- Compare it with a known-working link in the same chat and Telegram client. If one URL works and another does not, that narrows the symptom but does not identify its cause.
Keep the test controlled: use the same client and chat where possible, and note the URL and time. A link that works in one client or URL form is not proof that all recipients will see a preview.
Check whether Telegram’s crawler can reach the page
Review origin, web-server, or CDN logs around a controlled test. Look for requests attributed to Telegram’s crawler, then inspect the response status, redirects, and requested image. A regular browser visit only shows that the browser could load the page; it does not show what Telegram received.
- Make sure the page and preview image are publicly accessible without a login, cookie, JavaScript execution, or interactive challenge.
- Check DNS and TLS, redirect behavior, CDN or WAF rules, bot restrictions, and robots directives for anything blocking the public page or its image.
- If no Telegram request reaches the origin, investigate the public route and those access controls first. If they appear normal, the absence of a log entry does not establish why Telegram did not request the URL.
Telegram’s official checklist describes what a preview should contain, but it is not a complete crawler specification. September 2026 issue reports describe site owners checking crawler requests and access; those case reports do not establish universal crawler behavior. Telegram issue c/61650

Verify the metadata in the actual HTML
Inspect the HTML returned to an unauthenticated request—not just the fields saved in your CMS or framework. The page should expose an accurate title and description identifying the linked content, a suitable public image when one exists, and a site name consistent with the identity readers see on the site.
Telegram’s Instant View checklist says a description is required for a link preview, recommends a cover image rather than an empty or generic-logo image, and advises matching the site name to its visible name. The checklist does not set a universal image dimension or file-size threshold, so do not treat an arbitrary size as a Telegram requirement.

If a plugin or framework emits Open Graph metadata, check its rendered output and open the image URL directly without authentication. A page-specific description and image are more useful than generic site-wide metadata because they describe the page being shared.
Use the evidence to choose the next step

Handle stale or inconsistent previews carefully
Telegram’s messages.getWebPage API documentation describes webpage preview objects and URL/hash caching in that API context. It does not promise a general website-owner command to clear every failed preview.

In a September 2026 user-submitted report, a query-string variant generated a preview while the exact root URL did not. Another report describes successful page and image requests alongside inconsistent client rendering. Those examples document symptoms for particular sites, tests, and clients; reporters’ explanations involving cache, suppression, or routing are not confirmed Telegram explanations. A report also describes sending a link to @WebpageBot, but says that an update attempt did not restore the failing root preview. Treat it as a user-reported attempt, not a guaranteed cache reset. Likewise, use an altered URL only as a controlled comparison; do not add arbitrary query parameters as a permanent workaround without preserving the site’s canonical URL behavior.

When the page still has no preview
If the page and image return valid responses, the HTML metadata is appropriate, and logs show Telegram fetched them, the remaining cause may not be fixable from your site. Capture the exact URL, UTC test time, Telegram client and platform, page and image status codes, and a concise relevant log excerpt. Compare a control link in the same client, then report what you observed through Telegram’s support or issue channels. Describe the evidence rather than claiming a backend cause.
