Cypress UI Coverage shows which visible, interactive parts of your application Cypress tests exercised and which they missed. To use it, record a test run to Cypress Cloud with Test Replay enabled, then open the run’s UI Coverage tab. Cypress’s setup guidance requires Cypress 13 or later and organization-level UI Coverage enablement; it says no plugin, test changes, or code instrumentation are required.
What you need before you start
- Cypress 13 or later. The documented minimum is Cypress v13.
- A run recorded to Cypress Cloud. UI Coverage reports are generated for qualifying recorded runs.
- Test Replay enabled for the run. Cypress says a run recorded with Test Replay off will not produce a UI Coverage report.
- UI Coverage enabled for your organization. The setup guide describes enabling access through a free trial and says the feature is not included in standard Cypress Cloud plans. Plan and trial terms can change, so check the current settings in Cypress Cloud.
The setup guide was last updated July 28, 2026. Its version, access, and plan requirements are product details that may change.
Record a qualifying Cypress run
- Confirm that your project is using Cypress 13 or later and that Test Replay is enabled for the run.
- From your project directory, record a run using your project’s record key:
npx cypress run --record --key <your-record-key> - Use the equivalent Cypress command for your package manager if you run Cypress with Yarn, pnpm, or Bun.
- When the run finishes, open it in Cypress Cloud and select UI Coverage.
Cypress says the report is generated automatically for each qualifying recorded run. It covers unique states reached during end-to-end and component testing.
Read the report without overinterpreting its score
Overall and view scores
The report gives an overall score and a score for each view, such as a page or application state. Cypress describes the overall score as the share of interactive elements exercised by tests. Use it as a way to find parts of the captured interface that may need attention, not as a standalone measure of software quality.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Tested and untested elements
The element list identifies controls Cypress considers exercised or missed. DOM snapshots help you locate untested elements in context. Untested links can also expose destinations your tests have not visited.
Interpret the counts with Cypress’s rules in mind: only visible elements count; grouped elements count as one unit; and distinct link destinations count once. A link is considered tested if a test interacts with it or visits its destination. The report therefore describes the visible application surface captured by the run, rather than every possible control or behavior in your code.

Turn coverage gaps into useful tests
- Prioritize important views. Start with low-scoring pages or states that matter to users or critical business flows. A low score on a rarely used or out-of-scope view may be less urgent than a smaller gap in a core workflow.
- Inspect the actual controls. Use the DOM snapshot to examine untested buttons, inputs, links, and other interactive elements. Decide whether each is part of your application and should be covered.
- Separate real gaps from noise. Cypress identifies third-party widgets such as chat launchers and cookie banners, and links to external or otherwise out-of-scope destinations, as common sources of noise. Filter only elements or views that you have deliberately judged irrelevant; do not hide controls your users rely on merely to improve the score.
- Add focused tests for meaningful gaps. Write a hand-authored test for the uncovered interaction, or use Cypress Test Generation where available. Then record a later qualifying run and check whether the gap is addressed.
- Repeat the check. Treat coverage review as a loop: confirm a gap, address it, and verify in a later report that it remains closed.
- Automate only when the report is trustworthy. Cypress documents using its Results API to compare runs or enforce a threshold. Its pull-request policy guide says the helper it references requires Test Replay and a run recorded within the previous seven days. That seven-day window is a constraint of the referenced helper, not a general rule for every UI Coverage report.
Configure UI Coverage in Cypress Cloud
Configuration is edited as JSON in Cypress Cloud at Project Settings → App Quality, not in your repository. It is opt-in and can be introduced incrementally. Cypress says configuration changes can be applied to historical runs by reprocessing them, so you may not need to rerun tests just to see the effect of a configuration change.
Options for shaping the report
elementFiltersremoves specific elements from reporting.viewFiltersremoves entire views and links to those views.viewsgroups URLs into report views.elementGroupscombines repeated controls into a group.elementsrenames or stabilizes an element’s identity.significantAttributesandattributeFilterscontrol how elements are matched.additionalInteractionCommandsandallowedInteractionCommandstune which commands count as interactions.profilesapplies configuration overrides based on run tags.
Some options are shared with Cypress Accessibility when defined at the configuration root. UI Coverage-specific options belong under uiCoverage. For the relevant shared options, Cypress says nested values replace rather than merge with root values. Repeat shared rules in the nested list if they should apply there too. By default, only Admin users can edit the configuration; Cypress says a point of contact can enable editing for others.

The available evidence describes these options and where to configure them, but does not provide a complete JSON schema or example configuration. Consult Cypress’s current UI Coverage configuration documentation for exact property shapes and accepted values rather than guessing at a JSON structure.
UI Coverage is not code coverage
UI Coverage asks which visible interactive UI elements tests touch. Code coverage concerns execution of source-code lines, branches, and functions; Cypress’s code coverage guide describes instrumentation and use of the @cypress/code-coverage plugin. The two approaches answer different questions and can complement one another. UI Coverage does not measure source-code line coverage and does not replace instrumented code coverage.

Troubleshoot missing reports and misleading gaps
No UI Coverage tab or report
- Check the Cypress version. The documented requirement is Cypress 13 or later.
- Check that the run was recorded to Cypress Cloud. A local, unrecorded run is not the documented workflow.
- Check Test Replay for that run. Runs recorded while Test Replay is off produce no UI Coverage report.
- Check organization enablement and access. UI Coverage must be enabled for the organization; verify current availability and trial or plan terms in Cypress Cloud.
A view has a low score
- Open its DOM snapshots and identify whether the missed controls belong to your application.
- Look for third-party chat or consent widgets and out-of-scope destinations before treating every listed item as a test defect.
- Review grouping and element-matching configuration if repeated controls or changing attributes make the report hard to interpret.
- After changing Cloud configuration, reprocess historical runs if appropriate; Cypress says reprocessing can apply configuration changes without rerunning tests.
A reported interaction does not count as expected
Review which commands are treated as interactions and whether the element is visible in the captured state. The configuration options for additional and allowed interaction commands can tune command recognition. Also check whether the control is grouped or whether the link’s destination has already been visited, since those rules affect how units are counted.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API, not a UI coverage tool: it captures a page rather than reporting which controls Cypress tests exercised. If you also need clean screenshots of pages while investigating a coverage gap, one GET request can return an image; see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can UI Coverage generate tests automatically?
Cypress Test Generation may be used to address uncovered interactions where available, but UI Coverage itself is a report for identifying and checking gaps.
Does a higher UI Coverage score prove an application is reliable or accessible?
No. The score reflects exercised visible interactive elements in the captured application surface; it is not a standalone measure of software quality or accessibility.
