Use one Playwright visual-test suite in GitHub Actions, Azure Pipelines (the current name for the Azure DevOps CI service formerly called Visual Studio Team Services, or VSTS), or both. The essential workflow is to check out the same test code, install a compatible runtime and browser, run tests under stable rendering conditions, publish machine-readable results, and retain screenshots or traces when tests fail. Azure Test Plans is optional: use it when you need test-case and requirement traceability, not just to run screenshot comparisons.
How the integration fits together
A visual test compares a rendered page or component against an expected image, or checks other visual conditions defined by your test suite. CI does not make those comparisons reliable by itself: it supplies a repeatable place to run the tests and a way to report outcomes. Playwright documents CI examples for both GitHub Actions and Azure Pipelines, so the same repository suite can serve both platforms. Playwright: Continuous Integration
- Keep tests, configuration, and any visual baselines in the repository checked out by the pipeline.
- Trigger the pipeline on pushes and pull requests as appropriate for your review policy.
- Install the project’s runtime, dependencies, and matching browser binaries.
- Run the suite and emit test results in a format the CI system can publish.
- Retain failure evidence, such as image diffs, screenshots, traces, or reports, as supported attachments or build artifacts.
Make screenshot runs comparable
Visual comparisons are sensitive to rendering inputs. Keep the browser version, operating system, viewport, fonts, application data, and other relevant inputs stable wherever possible. These are practical controls, not a guarantee that every run will be pixel-identical. Playwright notes that a container job can help provide a consistent screenshot environment across operating systems; ensure the container tag matches the Playwright version installed by the project. Playwright: Continuous Integration
- Use the same browser and viewport for baseline creation and CI comparisons.
- Make test data and page state deterministic; avoid content that changes unpredictably between runs.
- Review baseline changes intentionally rather than automatically accepting every changed image.
- If using sharding to split work across jobs, ensure each job has the dependencies and configuration required by its tests.
Run the suite in GitHub Actions
Playwright’s CI guide provides GitHub Actions workflow examples for push and pull-request triggers, and discusses sharding and containers. Use its current example as a starting point, then pin action versions and any Playwright container image to versions compatible with your project. Those example versions can change, so do not treat a copied version as permanent. Playwright: Continuous Integration

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
At minimum, the workflow needs to check out the repository, prepare the runtime, install project dependencies and browsers, run the tests, and upload the reports or failure artifacts your team wants to retain. Keep secrets and repository permissions limited to what the workflow needs, especially for workflows that run on external contributions.
Run the same suite in Azure Pipelines
In current Microsoft terminology, VSTS is Azure DevOps and the CI service is Azure Pipelines. The documented Playwright JavaScript example prepares Node.js, runs npm ci, installs Playwright browsers and system dependencies with npx playwright install --with-deps, and runs npx playwright test. Adapt the runtime and commands to your actual project; do not copy JavaScript steps for a different language or package manager. Playwright: Continuous Integration

- Check out the repository containing the tests and configuration.
- Select a Node.js version compatible with the project and install dependencies reproducibly with
npm ci. - Install the browser binaries and required operating-system dependencies using
npx playwright install --with-deps. - Run
npx playwright test, configured to emit JUnit results if you want to publish them through Azure Pipelines’ test-results task. - Run
PublishTestResults@2against the JUnit output. The Playwright guide shows merging result files and configuring the task to fail when tests fail; align that behavior with your team’s gate policy. - Publish screenshots, traces, image diffs, or HTML reports as attachments or pipeline artifacts according to the output format and task support.
For other frameworks, Microsoft lists support in Azure Test Plans guidance for MSTest, NUnit, xUnit, Selenium, Coded UI, Python PyTest, and Java. The exact pipeline commands and result publishing setup depend on the framework and result format. Microsoft: Set up automated testing with Azure Test Plans
Publish results and preserve useful failure evidence
Running tests and publishing their results are separate tasks. A process exit code can fail a pipeline, but it does not by itself provide a browsable test-results view. For Azure Pipelines, Playwright documents JUnit output published with PublishTestResults@2. Choose whether failed tests should fail the task and pipeline based on the role of that run—for example, a required pull-request gate versus an informational scheduled run. Playwright: Continuous Integration
Do not assume every screenshot file will appear automatically in a test report. Microsoft’s UI-testing guidance says screenshots can help diagnose unattended UI failures, but screenshots run through the Visual Studio Test task must be added as result files to appear in reports. The documented attachment formats include VSTest/TRX and NUnit 3.0; for other formats, publish separate artifacts or use the relevant REST APIs. Confirm support for your specific task and result format before relying on report attachments. Microsoft: UI testing considerations

When to use Azure Test Plans
Azure Test Plans is not needed simply to run Playwright screenshot comparisons. It adds value when your process needs test methods associated with test case work items, on-demand execution, or links between test outcomes and requirements. Microsoft describes this relationship as: “Test projects are associated with test case work items to provide traceability and enable on-demand execution.” Microsoft: Set up automated testing with Azure Test Plans
The same guidance covers pipeline integration and framework support in both Classic and YAML pipelines. Use the Azure Test Plans path when traceability or a shared manual-and-automated testing view is a requirement; otherwise, a pipeline that runs tests and publishes results may be sufficient. Distinguish headless browser testing from automation that requires a visible desktop session. Microsoft’s guidance says Microsoft-hosted Azure agents support headless web UI testing, but not visible UI testing; visible-UI scenarios can require a properly configured self-hosted Windows agent. Azure Playwright Workspaces is an optional managed execution route documented for GitHub Actions and Azure Pipelines. Setup requires a workspace, a region-specific endpoint, and CI authentication. The GitHub route requires a repository/workflow and GitHub-to-Azure authentication; the Azure Pipelines route requires an organization/project, pipeline, and Azure Resource Manager service connection. It is an execution option, not a prerequisite for visual tests. Microsoft: Set up continuous end-to-end testing with Playwright Workspaces

- Browser executable or shared-library errors: Install the browser version compatible with the project’s Playwright package and, on Linux agents, install required system dependencies. In the documented Azure example,
npx playwright install --with-depshandles browser and dependency installation. - Visual differences only in CI: Compare browser, operating system/container, viewport, fonts, test data, and page state with the baseline environment. A compatible Playwright container can reduce environment differences, but does not remove the need to control other rendering inputs.
- Pipeline is green but no test report is visible: Ensure the test runner writes the configured result format and that the publishing task points to the output files. Publishing is a separate step from running the tests.
- Screenshots are missing from a test report: Check whether the task and result format support attachments and whether files were added as result files. For unsupported formats, publish artifacts separately or use a REST API route.
- Visible interaction tests fail on Microsoft-hosted agents: Determine whether the scenario needs a desktop UI. Hosted Azure agents support headless web UI testing; visible-UI scenarios can require a configured self-hosted Windows agent.
- Tests fail after changing a container or action version: Align the container tag and workflow action versions with the project’s installed Playwright and review the updated CI documentation rather than assuming old example values remain current.
