Choose Applitools Eyes if you want visual checks integrated into an existing test suite and are considering a commercial service with managed review or execution capabilities. Choose BackstopJS if you want to configure and operate more of the screenshot-comparison workflow yourself. Neither is a universal winner: the right choice depends on your test stack, capture needs, deployment constraints, review process, and current costs.
What website screenshot testing does
Visual regression testing captures a user interface at defined checkpoints and compares each capture with a reference image. The resulting differences need human review: a changed image may represent an intentional design update or a UI defect. Applitools describes the goal as ensuring previously correct screens have not changed unexpectedly in its Overview of Visual UI Testing.
These tools do not remove the need to choose representative pages, states, and viewports. They help make visual changes visible within a repeatable testing workflow.
How the workflows differ
Applitools Eyes: SDK-integrated checks
Applitools documents Eyes SDKs as a way to trigger captures and visual checks from test-suite code. Its product information lists integrations including Playwright, Cypress, Selenium, Storybook, Appium, and WebdriverIO. Applitools also advertises cross-browser and device execution and baseline-management capabilities. These are vendor-described features; confirm that the exact framework, language, browser, and plan combination you need is supported before committing. See the Eyes product page.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
BackstopJS: project-configured comparisons
BackstopJS describes automating visual regression testing for web apps by comparing screenshots over time. Its repository documents configuration for the page or endpoint under test, CI and source-control integration, and a readySelector option for waiting until a page element is present before capture. That configuration can suit a team that wants control over test setup and page readiness, but verify the current project implementation and its fit with your environment in the BackstopJS repository.
Compare the tools against your application
| Decision factor | Applitools Eyes | BackstopJS | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Framework fit | SDKs integrate visual checks into test suites; the vendor lists multiple frameworks. | Project configuration is used to define screenshot comparisons. | Confirm support for your language, test framework, and current versions; estimate the effort to add checks to representative tests. |
| Capture control | Assess the capture controls in the Eyes SDK for your stack. | Repository documentation covers endpoint/document configuration and readySelector. |
Test routes, authenticated states, dynamic data, and page readiness rather than relying on a static demo page. |
| Baseline review | Applitools advertises grouped review and baseline-management features. | Assess how your team will inspect differences and maintain reference images in its configured workflow. | Measure review effort for legitimate UI changes and the steps needed to keep baselines reliable. |
| Browser and device coverage | Applitools advertises cross-browser and device execution. | Coverage depends on your configured workflow and environment. | List the actual browsers, viewport sizes, devices, and application types you require; confirm exact coverage and any plan limits. |
| Workflow ownership and deployment | Applitools’ vendor-authored comparison page lists public SaaS, dedicated cloud, and on-premises options. | The team configures more of its screenshot workflow itself. | Confirm current availability, security terms, and deployment requirements with the vendor or project documentation. |
| Cost and operating effort | Current pricing and test-volume limits are not established here. | Current total operating cost is not established here. | Check current pricing, CI runtime, infrastructure, and maintenance effort; do not assume either is cheaper. |
Descriptions of Eyes capabilities and deployment choices in Applitools’ product page and comparison page are vendor claims, not independent measurements. Verify plan availability and terms for your project.

Run a proof of concept before deciding
Use the same representative pages and changes in both workflows where practical. Include pages with dynamic content and responsive states; the result on a simple, static page may not predict the work your application requires.
- Choose representative scenarios. Include high-value routes, common UI states, at least one responsive layout, and pages with data that changes between runs.
- Integrate with your real test path. Use the framework and CI setup your team intends to keep. Configure page readiness and state setup, including BackstopJS’s documented
readySelectorwhere appropriate. - Review the same kinds of changes. Include an intentional UI change and a defect-like change, then note whether the differences are understandable and actionable.
- Track the operational costs. Record false positives, missed changes your team identifies, baseline approval effort, CI behavior, and the time spent maintaining configuration.
- Check constraints and commercial terms. Confirm supported combinations, security and deployment requirements, test-volume limits, and current pricing before selecting a workflow.
The available product and project descriptions establish features, not which tool is faster or more accurate on a particular application. There is no independent head-to-head benchmark here that supports a universal winner.

ScreenshotNeo as an alternative for screenshot capture
If your immediate need is to capture website screenshots through an API rather than choose a visual-regression review workflow, consider ScreenshotNeo. It is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers; it is not a substitute for evaluating how Eyes or BackstopJS fit into your baseline-testing process.
