To build a web application with Python, choose a framework that fits the project, create a small working feature, connect it to persistent data, test it, and deploy it with production settings. Django is a strong fit for conventional sites that benefit from integrated facilities; Flask gives you flexibility to assemble a smaller application; FastAPI is oriented toward HTTP APIs. Start with Python fundamentals and basic HTML and CSS, then learn one framework by completing a project rather than trying to master all three at once.
What to learn before building a Python web app
You do not need to be an expert in Python before starting, but you should be comfortable with its core syntax and everyday tools: functions, modules, exceptions, collections, classes, and reading tracebacks. Basic HTML and CSS help you understand what a server-rendered page returns and how a browser displays it. The Real Python web-development learning path assumes Python basics and begins with HTML and CSS foundations.
Make the first project small enough to finish: for example, a notes list, a reading tracker, or a simple inventory. A useful first milestone is one complete vertical slice: accept a request, validate its input, save or retrieve data, and return a useful page or JSON response. That teaches more than scaffolding several unfinished projects.
Choose Django, Flask, or FastAPI for the project shape
These frameworks are not a universal best-to-worst ranking. Match the framework to what you are building and how much structure you want to adopt.

| Framework | Good fit | Facilities and trade-offs | Structure to expect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Django | A conventional web application with pages, forms, and administrative workflows. | Its getting-started material highlights forms and an admin interface. Integrated facilities can reduce the number of separate choices you must make. | Use the framework’s established application structure and conventions. See Django’s getting-started guide. |
| Flask | A small or specialized application where you want to choose how the pieces fit together. | Flask does not prescribe one project layout or a fixed set of extensions. That flexibility means you must decide which additions the project needs. | Choose and document a coherent layout instead of allowing files and responsibilities to drift. The Flask tutorial builds a blog with registration, login, and content editing. |
| FastAPI | An HTTP API that accepts and returns structured data. | Its first-steps guide describes generated interactive API documentation and an OpenAPI schema. Those help people inspect and integrate an API, but they do not replace tests or broader technical documentation. | Organize routes, request and response models, and application setup for the API you are building. Start with FastAPI’s first steps. |
Consider the application shape, built-in facilities versus extensions, the structure you are prepared to maintain, and the eventual deployment interface. The framework documentation cited here does not establish a universal winner by speed, popularity, or hiring demand.
Build a first working slice with Flask
The following small example creates a JSON notes API backed by SQLite. It is intentionally limited: it demonstrates routing, JSON input, basic validation, persistence, and a response, not a complete production application. Create a project folder, make an isolated environment, install Flask, and save the code as app.py.

Install Flask and record the dependency:
python -m pip install Flask python -m pip freeze > requirements.txt -
Save this application as
app.py:import sqlite3 from flask import Flask, jsonify, request app = Flask(__name__) DATABASE = "notes.sqlite3" def connect_db(): connection = sqlite3.connect(DATABASE) connection.row_factory = sqlite3.Row return connection def initialize_db(): with connect_db() as connection: connection.execute( "CREATE TABLE IF NOT EXISTS notes (" "id INTEGER PRIMARY KEY AUTOINCREMENT, " "text TEXT NOT NULL)" ) initialize_db() @app.get("/notes") def list_notes(): with connect_db() as connection: rows = connection.execute( "SELECT id, text FROM notes ORDER BY id" ).fetchall() return jsonify([dict(row) for row in rows]) @app.post("/notes") def create_note(): data = request.get_json(silent=True) if not isinstance(data, dict): return jsonify(error="Send a JSON object."), 400 text = data.get("text") if not isinstance(text, str) or not text.strip(): return jsonify(error="text must be a non-empty string."), 400 with connect_db() as connection: cursor = connection.execute( "INSERT INTO notes (text) VALUES (?)", (text.strip(),) ) note_id = cursor.lastrowid return jsonify(id=note_id, text=text.strip()), 201 -
Run the local development server:
flask --app app runIn another terminal, create a note and then list notes:

201and a JSON object containing an ID and the saved text. The GET request should return a JSON array. The SQLite file is created in the working directory.
For a real app, add tests, configuration, authentication and authorization if needed, and deliberate error handling. Do not treat this example’s simple validation or local database setup as a complete security or deployment design.
Organize dependencies and project settings
An isolated environment prevents one project’s installed packages from silently becoming another project’s dependencies. A dependency record also helps a teammate or deployment environment recreate the package set. The example records installed packages in requirements.txt; another documented approach is to use uv with a project .venv and uv.lock. FastAPI’s current tutorial demonstrates that workflow and also describes a pip-based option. Neither approach is mandatory for every Python project.
Keep environment-specific values, such as secret keys and database connection settings, out of source code. Use separate settings for local development and deployment, and do not commit credentials to a repository. As the app grows, keep route handlers focused and separate data access, validation, and configuration where that makes the code easier to change and test.
Turn the first slice into an application or API
For a website with pages and forms
Decide whether pages should be rendered by the server or whether a separate front end will call an API. Add templates, form validation, and data models appropriate to the framework. If you choose Django, explore its integrated forms and admin facilities before adding separate tools that duplicate them. If you choose Flask, add extensions only when a concrete need appears, and keep their setup in a documented project structure.
For a JSON API
Define the endpoints, accepted input, response shape, and error behavior before adding routes. Validate incoming data rather than trusting a client to send the right types or fields. FastAPI is oriented toward this project shape and can generate interactive API documentation and an OpenAPI schema. Those are useful for trying and integrating endpoints, but you still need tests for application behavior and documentation for decisions the schema cannot explain.
For either project
- Routing: give each page or operation a clear URL and HTTP method.
- Validation: reject malformed or incomplete input with a predictable response.
- Persistence: choose and configure a database appropriate to the application; plan how schema changes will be applied.
- Access control: add authentication only where identity is needed, and enforce authorization for each protected action.
- Tests: cover successful requests, invalid input, and important failure cases.
Test behavior before deployment
Test the behavior a user or API client depends on, not only whether the process starts. For the notes example, useful checks include listing an empty collection, creating a valid note, verifying it appears in a later list response, and confirming that missing or blank text receives a client error. Add tests for access-control rules and database failures when those features exist.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsKeep local development tools and production operation separate. FastAPI’s generated interactive API documentation can help inspect endpoints during development; it is not evidence that an endpoint handles every edge case correctly. Automated tests, error reporting, and a deployment checklist address different needs.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Deploy with production settings, not the development server
The development server is for local work, not a production deployment. Django’s official documentation states: “The runserver command starts a lightweight development server, which is not suitable for production.” Django supports WSGI and ASGI interfaces; its deployment guide describes WSGI as synchronous and ASGI as asynchronous-friendly. Review the current Django deployment documentation for the chosen interface, static files, error reporting, and its pre-deployment checklist.
Deployment is more than choosing a host. FastAPI’s deployment concepts call out HTTPS, startup behavior, restarts, replication, memory, and pre-start steps. HTTPS is commonly provided by a TLS termination proxy or a cloud service, and certificate renewal needs an owner. Provider costs and setup constraints vary; the cited material does not establish one best host. See FastAPI’s deployment concepts.
- Use a production-capable server and interface rather than a framework development server.
- Set production configuration and secrets separately from local settings.
- Enable HTTPS and decide who maintains certificate renewal.
- Plan how static and user-uploaded media files will be served and stored.
- Arrange process startup, restart behavior, logs, and error reporting.
- Review the current deployment checklist for your framework and hosting environment.
Capture a page from your Python project
When you need a visual record of a page your app serves—for a report, preview, or regression workflow—you can capture it in a browser yourself or call a screenshot API. The DIY route is to start the app in a browser-accessible environment, open the page in a browser automation tool, wait for the page to be ready, and save a screenshot. This gives you control over browser setup and capture behavior, but you own that setup.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. One GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Its capture process can accept cookie and consent banners like a visitor and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and the response says which outcome occurred in X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. AI agents can use its MCP server tools take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf.
For a quick test, replace the target URL with a page your app exposes publicly. The API key is available from your ScreenshotNeo account; see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options and response details.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo offers 1,000 screenshots per month free with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000, and every feature is on every plan. Learn about ScreenshotNeo or sign up free for 1,000 screenshots a month with no card.
Optional next step for a Django learner
If you chose Django and want a project-based companion, William S. Vincent’s Django for Beginners is one option; its author/publisher page describes a project-based course and book and says a paperback version is available on Amazon. It is specific to the Django route, not a general guide to Flask or FastAPI. Check the current edition and listing on the author’s page. The official framework documentation remains a substantial free starting point for all three choices.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I build a Python web app without writing JavaScript?
Yes. A server-rendered site can return HTML pages and handle form submissions without requiring a separate JavaScript front end. JavaScript becomes useful when the interface needs browser-side interactions or when a separate client consumes an API.
Do FastAPI’s generated API docs document everything developers need to know?
No. They describe the API schema and support interactive exploration, but project-specific behavior, setup, operational details, and design decisions may need separate documentation.
