Start with the exact error message and the line where it occurs. ReferenceError: x is not defined usually means JavaScript cannot find a declaration for x in the current scope. Correct the name, make the intended declaration visible at the use site, or ensure the code that provides it has loaded before it is used. If the message says Cannot access 'x' before initialization, the name exists but code is reading it before its let, const, or class declaration initializes.
Identify which ReferenceError you have
Read the full message, then inspect the reported source line and surrounding code. MDN describes the “not defined” case as: “There is a non-existent variable referenced somewhere.” MDN’s ReferenceError reference explains the error and its common causes.
ReferenceError: name is not defined: the identifier cannot be resolved in the code’s current execution environment.ReferenceError: Cannot access 'name' before initialization: a lexical binding exists, but execution reaches a read before its initialization.- A ReferenceError on assignment, such as
count = 1, may mean strict mode is preventing an undeclared assignment from creating an accidental global.
Fix “is not defined” errors
Check spelling and capitalization
JavaScript identifiers are case-sensitive. Compare every occurrence of the name, including capitalization, with the declaration or import you intended to use. If it is a typo, correct it; if not, locate the code that should define it.
Make sure the declaration is in scope
A declaration inside a function is not available outside that function. let and const are also limited to the block where they are declared. Move the use into the appropriate scope, return the value and store it in the caller, pass it as an argument, or place the declaration in the narrowest scope shared by the code that needs it.

function calculate() {
const total = 2 + 3;
return total;
}
console.log(total); // ReferenceError: total is not defined
const result = calculate();
console.log(result); // 5
Here, total belongs to calculate. Returning it and assigning the result gives the caller its own accessible binding.
Confirm dependencies and browser script order
If a name should be supplied by a library or another script, verify that the dependency loaded successfully and that the consuming code runs after it. For browser script-element usage, load the library before code that reads its global. Module imports and other runtimes have their own loading rules, so do not assume a script-tag fix applies unchanged there.

Declare names before assigning to them
In strict mode, assigning to an undeclared identifier throws a ReferenceError rather than creating an implicit global. Declare a local binding when that is what the code needs:
'use strict';
let count = 1;
count += 1;
If global state is genuinely intended, assign through globalThis explicitly—for example, globalThis.count = 1. Do not disable strict mode just to hide an undeclared-name error.

Fix “Cannot access before initialization” errors
A let, const, or class binding is in its temporal dead zone until execution reaches its declaration and initializes it. Move the read after initialization or restructure execution so initialization happens first.
console.log(value); // ReferenceError: Cannot access 'value' before initialization
const value = 3;
Correct the order:
const value = 3;
console.log(value); // 3
Textual order alone does not always determine whether code fails; execution order matters. For example, a function can refer to a later lexical declaration if it is called only after that declaration has initialized. But calling code that reads the binding too early still triggers the error.

Using typeof is not a workaround for a lexical binding in its temporal dead zone: typeof value also throws there.
Distinguish ReferenceError from undefined
A declared variable without an initializer evaluates to undefined; an identifier with no resolvable declaration can throw a ReferenceError. These are different states and need different fixes.

let declared;
console.log(declared); // undefined
console.log(missingName); // ReferenceError: missingName is not defined
typeof missingName can test an undeclared global identifier without throwing, which is occasionally useful for optional globals. It does not make the name available, and it does not avoid a temporal-dead-zone error for a lexical binding.
A reliable debugging sequence
- Read the exact wording. Separate “is not defined” from “Cannot access before initialization.”
- Inspect the reported line. Find the identifier being read or assigned and check its exact spelling and capitalization.
- Find its declaration. Confirm it is declared, imported, or provided by a dependency.
- Trace scope. Check whether the use is inside the function or block that contains the declaration; pass or return values across boundaries as needed.
- Trace execution order. For lexical declarations, confirm initialization happens before any code reads the binding.
- Check loading and assignment context. Verify dependencies load before use, and declare a name instead of assigning an undeclared identifier in strict mode.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
- Changing
consttovarto make an error disappear: this changes scoping and initialization behavior rather than fixing a typo or inaccessible scope. Diagnose the actual cause first. Avarbinding is function-scoped and evaluates toundefinedbefore its initializer runs; it is not equivalent to an undeclared name. - Moving a declaration without checking callers: make sure every use occurs after initialization and within the binding’s scope.
- Using
typeofas a universal guard: it can help check an undeclared global, but it neither supplies a missing variable nor bypasses the temporal dead zone. - Assuming a dependency global exists: check that the script or dependency loaded successfully and that the code using it runs afterward.
- Turning off strict mode: this can conceal accidental globals and leave the underlying name-resolution problem unresolved.

If you are capturing a page while debugging a browser issue, ScreenshotNeo can return a screenshot with one GET request. The example captures Stripe; replace the URL with the page you need.

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Cookie banners are accepted and removed before the shot, along with known newsletter popups and chat widgets. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing; response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server lets AI agents use screenshot tools. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Learn about ScreenshotNeo, or sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month with no card.
