These tools show different views of an interface; none is a universal inspector for every pixel on screen.
Choose the right Android inspection tool

Inspect a running app with Layout Inspector
Layout Inspector is the best starting point when you are developing an app and need to see its runtime structure, including View, Compose, or mixed interfaces. It can show the component tree and attributes, let you select components, and provide snapshots for later examination. For Compose, it also exposes composable structure and can help identify recomposition or skipped recomposition behavior. See the official Layout Inspector guide for version-specific details.
- Run the app in an emulator or on a connected Android device.
- Open Running Devices in Android Studio and start Layout Inspector.
- Select a node in the Component Tree to examine its attributes and corresponding on-screen component.
- If overlapping elements make selection difficult, use Deep Inspect to select the component, then turn Deep Inspect off to interact with the app again.
You can also export and import layout snapshots or load a bitmap overlay to compare the rendered screen with a design mockup. Attribute inspection may restart an activity on some combinations of Android Studio and device; check the current guide for your setup rather than assuming the behavior is identical everywhere.
Inspect controls for UI automation
Use UI Automator when the question is whether a test can find and operate a visible control. Android documents UI Automator Viewer as a graphical way to scan the foreground interface and inspect component properties. Its testing documentation also describes modern predicate-based APIs for finding and interacting with elements, plus waiting for the accessibility tree to settle when a test needs the interface to stabilize before checking elements or taking a screenshot. Consult the UI Automator documentation for the API surface and setup that match your project.

A hierarchy is only a representation of what the app and framework expose. Custom-drawn content or visual details may not appear as separate nodes. If an element is missing, compare the hierarchy with the screen and test the intended interaction; do not assume that a missing node means the pixels are absent or that a visible shape is independently actionable.
Check accessibility labels and real assistive-technology behavior
For accessibility review, inspect labels and semantics, run available checks, and then use the app with TalkBack or another relevant accessibility service. Android’s Compose guidance identifies Layout Inspector, UI Automator, and Android Accessibility Suite tools as ways to examine an experience, while recommending testing with actual assistive technologies to understand what users encounter. A content label may be spoken by TalkBack without appearing as visible text.

- Accessibility Scanner: scans the screen and suggests ways to improve accessibility, including potential missing labels and layout or interaction concerns. Its suggestions are not proof that the whole app is accessible. See Accessibility Scanner results.
- Android Studio accessibility checks: use these to identify issues the checks support, then verify behavior on the device.
- Manual testing: navigate with TalkBack and confirm that controls have understandable names, focus order makes sense, and actions work without relying only on sight.
Some checks cannot detect issues that arise only while an app is running on a device. Secure windows using FLAG_SECURE cannot be captured for Accessibility Scanner image or contrast analysis, so a scan may not cover those screens. Common inspection problems and what to try
- The element is visible but absent from the tree: the tree reflects exposed UI or semantics, not every pixel. Check whether the content is custom-drawn, compare with the visible screen, and test the interaction directly.
- A component is hard to select because another overlaps it: use Layout Inspector’s Deep Inspect to select it, then disable Deep Inspect before resuming interaction.
- The app restarts while you inspect attributes: attribute inspection can trigger an activity restart on some tool/device combinations. Check the current Android Studio guide for your version and device.
- Scanner cannot analyze a screen: secure content marked with
FLAG_SECUREprevents image-based or contrast analysis. Use other supported checks and manual accessibility testing instead. - An automated check passes but an interaction still feels inaccessible: automated checks have limits, including runtime behavior. Test the workflow with TalkBack or the relevant accessibility service.
