Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteFor website screenshot testing, start with ScreenshotNeo if you need screenshot capture through an API or AI-agent tool; choose BrowserStack Percy for a hosted visual-testing workflow, Playwright for code-first screenshot assertions, or Chromatic for component-focused review in a Storybook workflow. BackstopJS and Argos-CI are also candidates to assess. These tools do not share one workflow, so the right replacement depends on how you capture, compare, approve, and maintain visual baselines.
What an Applitools alternative needs to replace
Visual regression testing captures a page or component, compares the result with an approved baseline, and flags differences for review. It tests rendered appearance; it complements functional tests rather than replacing them. BrowserStack describes this baseline-and-comparison model in its visual regression testing guide.
Before choosing a replacement, identify what your team uses Applitools for: capturing pages or components, comparing images, reviewing changes, managing baselines, or fitting visual checks into CI. A screenshot API can capture images, but capture alone is not the same as a complete visual-regression review workflow.
Applitools alternatives to evaluate
1. ScreenshotNeo: screenshot API and MCP server
Try ScreenshotNeo first if your immediate need is reliable website screenshot capture for tests, reports, or AI-agent workflows. A single GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. It is a capture service, so teams should determine whether they also need a separate baseline comparison and approval system.

#1 Best Overall
ScreenshotNeo can accept cookie or consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be disabled. Its response identifies page verdict and billing status: bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed. It also offers an MCP server with take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
2. BrowserStack Percy: hosted visual testing
Percy is a hosted visual-testing option listed alongside Applitools in BrowserStack’s category guide. Evaluate it if you want a hosted service with CI/CD integration and visual review, and compare its baseline, review, deployment, and data-handling fit with your requirements. Applitools’ own comparison discusses differences between its approach and BrowserStack’s; treat those as vendor-authored claims, not independent performance findings: Applitools vs BrowserStack.
3. Playwright screenshot comparisons: code-first testing
If your team already uses Playwright Test, its screenshot assertions offer a code-first way to compare rendered output with snapshots. The official Playwright visual comparisons documentation explains the workflow. Your team remains responsible for integrating baseline review and approvals into its project and CI process.

4. Chromatic: component-centered review
Chromatic is worth evaluating when visual review centers on components and Storybook. Consult its official documentation for current capabilities and setup details; do not assume a component-focused workflow automatically covers your full website pages.

5. BackstopJS and Argos-CI: other workflow candidates
BrowserStack’s category guide includes BackstopJS, describing it as open source, and Argos-CI, describing it as GitHub-oriented. Those are useful starting points, not a substitute for checking each project’s current documentation, maintenance status, integrations, and fit with your deployment needs.

How to choose the right replacement
- Existing stack: Check whether the option fits your browser automation framework, component workflow, and CI system.
- Coverage: List the browsers, devices, page types, and UI components you actually need to test, then confirm the candidate covers them.
- Comparison behavior: Determine how it handles dynamic content, rendering noise, thresholds, and meaningful visual differences. Do not infer accuracy from a vendor comparison page.
- Review and baselines: Decide who approves visual changes, how approved changes become new baselines, and how much ongoing upkeep the workflow requires.
- Deployment and data controls: Confirm that hosting and data handling meet your team’s requirements.
- Capture versus testing: If you choose a screenshot API, verify how you will perform image comparison, manage baselines, and review differences. Capture is only one part of regression testing.
BrowserStack’s category guide and Applitools’ comparison discuss integration, coverage, deployment, and maintenance from their respective vendor perspectives. Use those pages to identify questions, then validate the answers against current product documentation and your own requirements.
Pricing: compare the current plan, not a remembered figure
Pricing changes and plan limits may vary. BrowserStack’s pricing listing showed a Percy desktop plan at $199 per month, billed annually, for 10,000 screenshots per month, with an additional screenshot charge. This is a plan-specific listing, not a promise of current availability or terms; verify the current plan, region, screenshot limits, and overage charges on BrowserStack’s pricing page. Comparable current prices for Applitools, Chromatic, BackstopJS, and Argos-CI are not established here, so a price-based ranking would be misleading.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Practical checks before switching
- Inventory your current checks. Record the pages or components covered, the browsers and viewports used, and where baselines and approvals live.
- Run a representative pilot. Include stable pages and pages with dynamic content, plus the CI path your team actually uses.
- Review differences manually. Confirm that the candidate surfaces the changes your team cares about and that noise can be handled in a maintainable way.
- Test the change-approval path. Make sure the people responsible can review a change and update the approved baseline using a process they can sustain.
- Check deployment and cost terms. Validate data controls and current pricing against expected test volume before moving the full suite.
Common migration problems to check
- Only screenshots are being captured. A capture endpoint does not by itself supply the baseline, comparison, and review process. Choose and test those parts separately.
- Dynamic pages create noisy differences. Identify unstable page content and determine how the chosen comparison workflow handles it before making the new baseline authoritative.
- Baseline updates lack ownership. Assign responsibility for review and approvals during the pilot; otherwise expected UI changes can become difficult to distinguish from regressions.
- A hosted service does not meet deployment needs. Check hosting and data requirements early, rather than after integrating a candidate into CI.
- Pricing assumptions do not match usage. Recheck current plan limits and overage terms using your expected screenshot volume; the Percy figure above is a volatile listing, not a universal rate.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can Playwright replace Applitools for visual checks?
It can provide screenshot comparisons for teams using Playwright Test, but baseline management and review must fit your project workflow. See the Playwright documentation.
Is a screenshot API the same as visual regression testing?
No. An API can capture an image; regression testing also needs an approved baseline, comparison, and a way to review and approve differences.
