A 504 means a gateway or proxy did not receive a timely response from an upstream service. In a screenshot workflow, the delay could come from the screenshot provider, its browser renderer, the target website or a dependency the page needs—or the network path between them. The status alone does not tell you which layer failed. Start by recording the response and elapsed time, then compare them with the relevant provider and gateway limits before changing timeouts.
What a 504 tells you—and what it does not
HTTP 504, “Gateway Timeout,” says that a server acting as a gateway or proxy did not get a response from an upstream server in time to complete the request. MDN’s 504 reference describes that meaning. It does not establish that the target website is down: a screenshot provider may have its own gateway, application server and browser renderer between your client and the page.
Possible boundaries include your client or an intervening proxy, the screenshot service’s API or render deadline, browser navigation, the target site, and the target’s external resources. A provider may also distinguish a page-render failure from rate limiting, quota exhaustion or renderer saturation. Interpret the response body and headers using that provider’s documentation rather than treating every timeout or status as the same failure.
Locate the failing layer before changing settings
- Capture the complete incident details. Save the status, response body or error code, response headers, elapsed time, timestamp, target URL, and every rendering option. Include a request ID if returned. Do not share API keys, cookies or authorization headers when escalating.
- Compare elapsed time with documented limits. Check the provider’s whole-render and navigation timeouts, as applicable, along with client, proxy and gateway deadlines you control. A timeout close to a documented boundary is a clue, not proof; request IDs and logs can locate the boundary more reliably.
- Check quota, rate-limit and capacity signals. Inspect the provider’s documented headers and account allowance. Header meanings and thresholds differ across services and plans, so do not apply one vendor’s defaults to another. - Compare the target page with a simple public page. Retry the same request and options against a straightforward page, then compare with the original target. A page that depends on scripts, API calls, animation or many external resources can take longer to reach a strict wait condition. A successful comparison helps narrow the investigation but does not prove the target alone caused the timeout.
- Use logs if you operate the gateway or backend. Measure where time is spent across the integration, backend and network. AWS recommends enabling and checking API Gateway logs, reproducing the issue, and reviewing integration status and latency; Microsoft identifies backend processing, resource exhaustion and network delays among possible causes. Choose a wait condition that matches the screenshot
A screenshot does not always need to wait for every network request to finish. If your request waits for network idle and the page keeps polling, loading analytics or maintaining long-lived connections, that condition may be harder to satisfy than the screenshot requires. Where your provider supports it, consider an earlier documented navigation condition or wait for a specific selector that marks the content you need. Provider options vary; for example, see Cloudflare’s screenshot API documentation.

Verify the resulting image contains the necessary content: relaxing a wait can make a request finish sooner but capture an incomplete page. Avoid adding a long fixed delay unless the required content genuinely needs it; a targeted element wait can be more relevant. Should you increase the timeout?
Only consider a longer limit after identifying which timeout is binding and confirming that the service permits changing it. It can be appropriate when a legitimate render needs more time and the relevant gateway or provider allows it. It will not make a slow backend, overloaded renderer or unreliable network faster, and an outer gateway may still give up before an inner operation completes.

AWS documents a possible timeout increase for some API Gateway REST API configurations while also advising users to reduce runtime. Microsoft’s guidance likewise notes that persistent 504s can reflect backend or network delays even when a larger timeout is used. These are product- and configuration-specific examples, not a universal setting for screenshot APIs.
Retry without hiding the cause
- Use a bounded retry with backoff only when a transient provider or network problem is plausible and repeating the request is safe.
- Honor provider retry guidance, including
Retry-Afterwhen supplied, and check whether failed renders count toward your quota. - Do not retry indefinitely when the same target and options repeatedly fail at the same boundary. Preserve each response and investigate the slow layer instead.

What to send when you escalate
Give the screenshot provider or site operator the timestamp and time zone, request ID, target URL, rendering parameters, exact error body and headers, elapsed time, and relevant gateway or backend latency evidence. Redact secrets—including API keys, cookies and authorization values—before sending logs or request details. The provider’s troubleshooting page may request additional response information; follow its instructions.
