How to Capture Thumbnails of HTTPS Websites with Certificate Errors

Use Playwright to capture an HTTPS site’s rendered content despite a certificate error, while distinguishing page screenshots from browser warning screens.

To capture a website’s rendered content despite an HTTPS certificate error, use Playwright and set ignoreHTTPSErrors: true on the browser context before navigating. Then take a page screenshot. This lets the automation attempt to load the site; it does not fix or validate the site’s certificate. If you instead need an image of the browser’s own certificate warning, that is a different task: an ordinary page screenshot captures page content, and a general reliable way to capture browser-generated warning screens is not established here.

Capture the rendered website with Playwright

Playwright’s browser context option ignoreHTTPSErrors defaults to false. Enable it when creating the context, then navigate and use the page screenshot method. The example below uses the Playwright library in Node.js with Chromium.

Install Playwright and its browser

  1. Install Playwright in a Node.js project: npm install playwright.

  2. Install the matching Chromium browser binary: npx playwright install chromium. Playwright requires browser binaries corresponding to its version; after updating Playwright, install the browsers again if needed.

Runnable example

Save this as capture.js, replace the URL with the target HTTPS site, and run node capture.js.

const { chromium } = require('playwright');

(async () => {
  const browser = await chromium.launch();
  try {
    const context = await browser.newContext({
      ignoreHTTPSErrors: true,
      viewport: { width: 1280, height: 720 }
    });
    const page = await context.newPage();
    await page.goto('https://example.com', {
      waitUntil: 'networkidle',
      timeout: 30000
    });
    await page.screenshot({ path: 'thumbnail.png' });
    await context.close();
  } finally {
    await browser.close();
  }
})();

networkidle is a practical choice for pages that finish loading network resources, but sites with persistent requests may not reach that state. If navigation times out, try a less restrictive wait condition such as domcontentloaded, then allow a suitable additional wait before capturing. The screenshot is of the rendered page viewport; use the screenshot API’s full-page option if the desired output is the entire page rather than a thumbnail-sized viewport.

Understand what the screenshot represents

Site content versus certificate interstitial

With HTTPS errors ignored in the context, the goal is to let the browser automation attempt to render the target site despite its certificate problem. The resulting capture may show site content or a site-side failure state, depending on what loads. It is not proof that the server certificate is valid, renewed, or safe.

A browser-generated certificate warning or interstitial is browser UI, not ordinary website content. Do not assume a page screenshot API will include that interface. If the warning itself is the required thumbnail, verify the behavior of the exact browser and framework version you use; the workflow above is for capturing the website’s rendered page.

Client certificates are a different feature

Playwright’s clientCertificates option is for TLS client authentication when a server requests a client certificate, and it is scoped to an exact origin. It does not resolve an expired, self-signed, or hostname-mismatched server certificate. For the target-site HTTPS error described here, the relevant documented context setting is ignoreHTTPSErrors.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo can return a screenshot or PDF from one request. Its service removes cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are not billed. It also offers an MCP server so AI agents can take screenshots. Plans include 1,000 screenshots per month free with no card, and paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.

For example, this cURL request captures a screenshot of the requested URL:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. ScreenshotNeo is a service alternative, not a certificate repair tool: the provided service details do not establish that it will capture a target page whose certificate is invalid, so confirm its behavior for your particular URL before relying on it for this case. Troubleshooting

Navigation still fails

  • Confirm that ignoreHTTPSErrors: true is set on the browser context created before the page navigates; setting it only after navigation will not affect that earlier request.

  • Check whether the failure is a timeout, DNS issue, refused connection, or site-side block rather than a certificate error. Ignoring certificate errors does not correct other network failures.

  • If the page remains incomplete, change the navigation wait condition from networkidle to domcontentloaded and add an intentional wait suited to the page.

The output is a warning or error screen, not the site

First determine whether the screen is generated by the browser or served by the website. The context option is intended to let automation attempt the HTTPS page despite certificate errors; it does not guarantee the site will render successfully. If the requirement is specifically to capture browser chrome or its certificate interstitial, test that separately with the chosen browser and framework.

Browser launch or executable errors

Install the browser binary for the Playwright version in the project with npx playwright install chromium. When upgrading Playwright, reinstall its corresponding browser binaries so the library and browser versions match.

Browser downloads fail behind an intercepting proxy

A local proxy that intercepts TLS while Playwright downloads browser binaries creates a different certificate-trust problem from the target website’s HTTPS certificate. Playwright documents using NODE_EXTRA_CA_CERTS for the custom CA in that browser-download scenario. Do not treat that environment variable as a replacement for the context’s ignoreHTTPSErrors option when handling a target page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does ignoring HTTPS errors fix the website’s certificate?

No. It changes how the automation context handles HTTPS errors; it does not renew, validate, or repair the server certificate.

Will Playwright’s page screenshot include the browser’s certificate warning UI?

Do not assume so. A page screenshot is for page content, and the behavior of browser-generated interstitial UI should be verified for the specific browser and framework.

Is a client certificate the same as ignoring a server certificate error?

No. Client certificates are for TLS client authentication when requested by a server, not for expired, self-signed, or hostname-mismatched server certificates.
