To reduce buffering with Amazon CloudFront, first identify whether the interruption comes from the viewer’s connection, the player and its video renditions, CloudFront’s cache and routing, or the origin. Check cache behavior and cache-hit ratio, measure origin response time, confirm that manifests and media segments follow the intended CloudFront behaviors, and verify that the player can switch to lower-bitrate variants. CloudFront can avoid an origin round trip when it serves a cached object; it cannot fix a slow origin, a weak viewer connection, a missing bitrate variant, or a misconfigured player.
Why a CloudFront video buffers
Video streaming delivers manifests and media segments as separate requests. A cache hit can serve an object from a CloudFront edge location without a new request to the origin; a miss causes CloudFront to fetch it from the configured origin. That can reduce origin work and delivery delay, but a cache-hit ratio is a diagnostic clue, not a guarantee of smooth playback. AWS lists poor network conditions, temporary origin problems, player tuning, and CDN misconfiguration among possible sources of playback errors.
Start by describing the symptom rather than assuming CloudFront is at fault. Startup delay, repeated rebuffering, a failed segment, and an HTTP error can have different causes and need different checks.
Record the affected playback conditions
- Note the viewer regions, devices, titles, and playback formats affected, and compare them with a session that works.
- Record whether the issue is slow startup, repeated interruptions, failed manifest or segment requests, or a 4xx/5xx response.
- Establish when it began and whether it occurs only during live playback, only for particular assets, or under particular load conditions.
Use player and origin logs alongside CloudFront request and cache observations. A first request for an object at an edge can be a normal cache miss; a miss by itself does not prove a fault.

Check cache behavior without serving stale video
Review the cache-hit ratio and inspect representative manifest and segment responses. Check whether the configured TTLs suit how often each object changes, and whether unnecessary query strings, cookies, or headers are splitting requests into separate cache keys. AWS recommends longer practical cache durations as one way to increase the proportion of requests served from CloudFront caches, but freshness matters: extending a live manifest’s lifetime too far can cause viewers to receive stale stream state.
What to look for
- Manifests and segments should have cache behavior appropriate to their update patterns; do not assume they should share the same freshness policy.
- Check whether query strings, cookies, or headers included in the cache key are actually required. Unneeded variation can reduce cache reuse.
- Compare cache observations across affected and working requests. Persistent misses or unusual cache fragmentation are worth investigating, but a miss on a newly requested object can be expected.
There is no universal TTL that fits every live and on-demand workflow. Set freshness according to the packaging workflow and how quickly the content must reflect updates.

Verify manifest and segment routing for the video format
Confirm that the paths your packaging workflow actually serves match the intended CloudFront cache behaviors and origins. AWS’s live-stream guidance distinguishes manifest and segment behaviors; a path pattern or policy copied from an unrelated example may not fit your deployment.
HLS, DASH, and CMAF
For HLS, DASH, or CMAF, identify the manifest and segment paths in actual requests, then verify that each routes to the correct origin and uses an appropriate cache policy. Confirm that the player is requesting the assets your packaging system publishes, rather than relying only on assumed file naming or path patterns.

Low-latency HLS
For LL-HLS blocking playlist requests, AWS specifies including the _HLS_msn and _HLS_part query strings in the manifest cache policy. Check that this behavior is in place for the relevant manifest requests. Keep the policy aligned with the live playlist’s freshness requirements rather than applying example TTLs blindly.
Measure origin latency and investigate 504 errors
A CloudFront HTTP 504 means the origin request failed or took too long. Possible causes include an origin that CloudFront cannot reach, traffic blocked by a firewall or security group, or delay in the application or its database. Measure typical and high-load origin response times and compare them with the timing of affected requests.

- Check reachability. Verify that the configured origin is available to CloudFront and that firewalls and security groups allow the required traffic.
- Inspect origin-side delays. If access is healthy, look for application or database latency and correlate it with the times CloudFront reports errors.
- Compare normal and busy periods. Check whether elevated origin latency occurs at the same time as playback failures or rebuffering.
- Address the underlying delay first. AWS recommends investigating origin latency and performance before raising CloudFront timeout values. A higher timeout alone does not make a slow or unreachable origin healthy.
Check the bitrate ladder and player behavior
When a viewer’s connection slows, an adaptive player can maintain playback by switching to a lower-bitrate rendition, but only if the packaged stream contains one and the player workflow can use it. Check the available representations and confirm that the player can move to a lower bitrate under constrained throughput. CloudFront cannot create renditions that were never encoded or packaged.
AWS’s Amazon CloudFront for Media whitepaper describes “Offering lower bitrate versions of the stream to the player so it can maintain the playback state during temporary periods of poor network conditions.” AWS Elemental MediaConvert is one AWS example for preparing video-on-demand assets; other packaging workflows may also provide a bitrate ladder.

Match the fix to the evidence

Use request, cache, origin, and player evidence together. The same symptom can arise at different layers, so avoid changing TTLs, timeouts, or the encoding ladder without confirming which part of the delivery path is implicated.
