For a starting estimate, plan on about 2.5–3 Mbps for 720p, 5 Mbps for 1080p, and 15–25 Mbps for 4K—but the exact recommendation depends on the streaming service. Add the estimates for streams playing at the same time, then leave capacity for other household activity. These are service recommendations, not guarantees that your connection will consistently deliver a particular quality.
Bandwidth is a connection rate, measured in megabits per second (Mbps). Data use is a volume, often measured in gigabytes (GB) per hour or month. Use the first figure to think about buffering; use the second when estimating a data cap.
How much speed does each streaming service recommend?
Official guidance differs by service. Netflix and YouTube give similar figures for 720p and 1080p, while their 4K recommendations differ. Disney+ publishes separate US guidance for HD, live content, and 4K.
| Resolution or mode | Netflix | YouTube | Disney+ (US) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 360p | Not stated | About 0.7 Mbps sustained | Not stated |
| 480p | Not stated | About 1.1 Mbps sustained | Not stated |
| 720p / HD | 3 Mbps or higher | About 2.5 Mbps sustained | 5 Mbps for HD; the cited guidance does not specify 720p separately |
| 1080p / Full HD | 5 Mbps or higher | About 5 Mbps sustained | Included in HD guidance: 5 Mbps |
| 4K / UHD | 15 Mbps or higher | About 20 Mbps sustained | 25 Mbps |
| Live content | Included in speed advice, with no separate figure | Varies by content; no separate figure in the cited table | 8 Mbps |
Netflix’s current speed guidance says its figures apply to a stable connection and includes live events in its general advice; the page does not display a publication year and was accessed in 2026. - Next-Gen Wi-Fi 6 Technology – The Archer AX10 leverages advanced Wi-Fi 6 features like OFDMA and 1024-QAM to deliver improved efficiency across your entire network. Perfect for high-bandwidth activities like streaming, gaming, and smart home connectivity.
- Next-gen Dual Band router - 300 Mbps on 2. 4 GHz (802. 11n) plus 1201 Mbps on 5 GHz (802. 11ax)
- Connect more devices than ever before - Wi-Fi 6 technology simultaneously communicates more data to more devices using OFDMA and MU-MIMO while reducing lag dramatically
- Powerful Dual-Core 900MHz Processor – Handles multiple data streams simultaneously for reliable performance across your devices. Ensures smooth streaming, online gaming, and video conferencing without buffering or lag.
Do not treat one service’s figure as a universal requirement. For instance, the cited 4K guidance ranges from Netflix’s 15 Mbps to Disney+ US’s 25 Mbps. A service’s recommendation is a planning benchmark, not a promise of uninterrupted playback.
How to estimate speed for multiple streams
Start with the recommendation for the service and resolution each person is watching, then add the concurrent streams. For example, two 1080p YouTube streams use a starting estimate of about 10 Mbps combined (5 Mbps each); that does not include gaming, video calls, downloads, or other household traffic.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
- List the streams likely to play at the same time and their resolutions.
- Use the relevant service’s per-stream recommendation from the table and add the figures.
- Account for other internet use and normal variation by choosing a plan with capacity beyond that subtotal.
- If playback still buffers, check the actual connection near the device and the local Wi-Fi conditions rather than assuming the plan speed is the only factor.
The official guidance cited here does not establish a universal household multiplier or a guaranteed extra percentage. How much spare capacity you need depends on what else uses the connection and how consistently your network delivers its advertised speed.
How much data does streaming use per hour?
Mbps and GB per hour answer different questions: Mbps is a rate at a point in time, while GB per hour estimates how much data viewing consumes. Hourly use varies with playback quality, settings, and device, so do not convert a speed recommendation directly into a data allowance.

- Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
- A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
- Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
- Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
- Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
Netflix estimates by playback setting
Netflix’s published estimates for one device on its high data-use setting are up to 1 GB per hour for SD, up to 3 GB per hour for HD, and up to 7 GB per hour for 4K UHD. Its low setting uses up to 0.3 GB per hour, and medium uses up to 0.7 GB per hour. Actual use depends on playback quality and settings; the help page does not display a publication year and was accessed in 2026. Netflix data usage.
Disney+ estimates vary by device and setting
Disney+’s UK help guidance, published June 29, 2026, reports approximately 7.7 GB per hour for automatic 4K UHD on a smart TV or TV-connected device, 2 GB per hour for moderate 1080p, and 0.7 GB per hour for save-data SD. The same page gives different figures for mobile devices and web browsers and says computer browsers are limited to 720p HD in the described configuration. These are Disney+ estimates for that guidance, not a universal conversion table. Disney+ data usage.
