SRT is usually the better starting point for sending live video across an unpredictable network, because it is designed to recover lost packets and adapt to changing conditions, and it supports AES encryption. RTMP is still the right choice when the destination or an established workflow requires RTMP. The deciding factor is whether both ends support the protocol and whether its trade-offs suit your network, latency target, security needs, and video workflow.
Choose by workflow, not by protocol reputation
| Your situation | Better starting point | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Sending contribution video over a variable public network | SRT | Both endpoints support SRT; the latency buffer allows time for recovery; and the network and firewall permit the connection. |
| Sending to a platform or workflow that specifies RTMP ingest | RTMP | The destination’s current ingest specification, codec, and stream configuration. Choosing a different protocol does not override the destination’s requirements. |
| Prioritizing protected contribution transport | SRT is a well-supported option | Confirm that encryption is configured at both endpoints. SRT supports AES encryption, but capability alone does not show that a particular connection has it enabled. |
| Trying to minimize end-to-end delay | Test the whole workflow | Measure the actual path, including encoding, transport buffer, receiver processing, and playback. Protocol names alone do not establish which setup will be faster. |
| Choosing a codec such as HEVC | Verify current endpoint support | Check the sender, receiver, and destination’s current implementation. A 2022 comparison’s codec statements should not be treated as universal current rules. |
SRT and RTMP are transport choices, not guarantees that a given platform will accept a stream. Check the ingest requirements of the service receiving the video before changing a working setup. Haivision’s comparison, published February 8, 2022, describes RTMP as TCP-based, with retransmission and adjustable buffers; its detailed comparisons are specific to that publication’s context. What SRT does well
SRT (Secure Reliable Transport) is an open-source video transport technology intended for unpredictable IP networks. Its mechanisms address jitter and bandwidth changes, recover lost packets through retransmission, and support AES encryption. These features make it a strong option for contribution video traversing a variable public network—but performance still depends on configuration and conditions at both ends.
The SRT Alliance describes low latency, recovery, encryption, and adaptive retransmission as SRT capabilities. Haivision’s SRT 1.5.3 documentation explains its network adaptation, recovery, and encryption functions. SRT Alliance FAQ · Haivision SRT 1.5.3 documentation

Recovery has a latency cost
Recovering missing data requires a receiver to allow time for retransmission. Configure the latency buffer to match the network conditions and delay your production can tolerate, then test under realistic conditions. A buffer that is too small may not leave enough time to recover packets; a larger one can increase delay. There is no universal SRT-versus-RTMP latency figure established by the available comparisons.
Encryption must be enabled and supported at both ends
SRT’s AES capability is useful when protecting a contribution link matters, but it does not mean every SRT connection is encrypted automatically. Verify the encryption settings and compatibility of the sender and receiver. Conversely, do not conclude that every RTMP deployment is unencrypted: security depends on the particular implementation and connection.

Why RTMP remains a valid choice
RTMP (Real-Time Messaging Protocol) remains in live-streaming use. If a platform, encoder, or established production workflow specifies RTMP ingest, compatibility is a practical reason to use it. An alternative protocol offers no benefit if the receiving endpoint cannot accept it.
Do not treat older codec comparisons as a substitute for checking the current destination. Haivision’s 2022 article discusses codec differences in that comparison’s context; confirm present-day protocol extensions and endpoint support, especially when choosing HEVC. Can you set up SRT without dedicated hardware?
Yes. OBS Studio documents an SRT URL workflow using an address in the form srt://IP:port, and its documentation covers MPEG-TS protocols supported through FFmpeg. That demonstrates a software configuration route; it does not mean every streaming destination accepts SRT. Confirm destination support before configuring your encoder. OBS Studio’s SRT guide
Dedicated SRT hardware may suit specialized contribution or remote-production workflows, but hardware is not inherently required just to try SRT. Check the support claims for a specific encoder and both endpoints before buying equipment.

How to make the decision
- Check the receiving endpoint first. Find its current ingest protocol, codec, and stream configuration requirements. If it specifies RTMP and does not accept SRT, use RTMP.
- Confirm support at both ends. For SRT, verify that both the sender and receiver can establish the connection and that the network and firewall allow it.
- Set a realistic latency target. Account for encoding, transport buffering and recovery, receiving, and playback—not just the protocol’s name.
- Test on the network you will actually use. For a variable link, check whether packet recovery and the chosen buffer meet your production’s delay and reliability needs.
- Verify security and codec configuration. Confirm encryption settings at both SRT endpoints where needed, and check that the destination supports your selected codec.
- Keep the simplest compatible workflow that meets the need. If RTMP is required and works for the destination, there is no general rule that makes replacing it worthwhile.
Common decision mistakes
- Assuming SRT is always faster: End-to-end delay depends on the encoder, transport buffer, receiver, processing, and playback. Test the full path.
- Assuming SRT works everywhere: OBS supports a software SRT workflow, but platform ingest support varies. Check the destination’s current requirements.
- Treating encryption as automatic: SRT supports AES; verify it is configured and compatible at both endpoints.
- Calling RTMP obsolete or inherently insecure: RTMP remains relevant where workflows require it, and security claims need to be specific to the actual deployment.
- Relying on a dated codec comparison: Check current sender, receiver, and destination support rather than generalizing a 2022 comparison.
