If YouTube Live reports an invalid stream key when you start FFmpeg, first copy the key for the intended broadcast from YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and replace the value FFmpeg is using. Then verify that the server URL and key are in the right fields—or combined only if your FFmpeg command or wrapper expects that format. A wrong or stale key is a credential problem; an SSL error or timeout may instead point to an RTMPS connection problem.
Fix the stream key first
- Open the intended broadcast in YouTube Studio. Go to Create → Go Live, open the Stream tab, and copy the stream key shown there. Make sure you are looking at the stream you intend FFmpeg to feed, rather than a key from a different broadcast or an old configuration. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance recommends getting a new key in Live Control Room and updating the encoder when a third-party encoder reports an error on startup.
- Replace the value FFmpeg actually uses. Update the key in the command, script, environment variable, or wrapper configuration that launches FFmpeg, then restart the process. Changing the key in Studio does not change a copy saved elsewhere.
- Reset the key if it may be stale or exposed. In Live Control Room, reset the key for the intended stream, copy the newly generated value, and replace the old value in FFmpeg. YouTube says only a channel owner or manager can reset a stream key; editors and viewers do not have that permission. Treat the key as a secret credential: YouTube describes stream keys as like a stream’s “password and address” in its live stream settings guide.
- Start FFmpeg again and check the result in Live Control Room. If YouTube accepts the connection, use the preview and stream-health indicators to check what arrives. If the key error remains, inspect the URL/key arrangement next.
Check that the server URL and key are in the right places
YouTube’s encoder setup presents the server URL and stream key as separate values. The server URL identifies the ingestion endpoint; the key (also called a stream name in some interfaces) identifies the stream. Copy both from the intended stream’s setup and follow the input format expected by the specific FFmpeg invocation or tool wrapping it. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions show the separate fields. The LiveStreams API reference also documents formats where an encoder needs the ingestion URL and stream name concatenated as STREAM_URL/STREAM_NAME.
- If your tool has separate server and key fields, put each value in its own field.
- If its interface or invocation expects a combined destination, use the documented format for that tool.
- Do not append the key to a URL and also supply it separately if the wrapper already combines those values. That can send a malformed destination.
- Check for a truncated copy, an accidental space, or a key left over in a saved script or service configuration.
There is no single safe FFmpeg command to prescribe without knowing your command, FFmpeg version, protocol, and any wrapper’s expected input format. Avoid pasting a stream key into public logs or support posts; redact it before sharing a command or error output.
Tell a credential rejection from a connection failure
Not every failed connection means YouTube rejected the key. The exact error matters: an explicit invalid-key response points first to the credential or its placement, while an SSL/certificate error or timeout suggests checking transport settings. Google’s RTMPS ingestion guidance specifies an RTMPS URL, a valid ingestion endpoint, and port 443. It notes that an invalid certificate can indicate an RTMP endpoint being used for an SSL connection, while a timeout can indicate cleartext RTMP sent to an endpoint expecting RTMPS. SNI (server-name indication) handling may also matter in a custom client.

Once the key is accepted, check stream compatibility
Video settings usually are not the first explanation for an explicit invalid-credential response. Once the connection is established, incompatible or unstable encoding can still affect stream health. YouTube’s published encoder settings support RTMP/RTMPS; list H.264, H.265, and AV1 video and AAC or MP3 audio; and allow up to 60 frames per second. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval, no longer than four seconds, and constant bitrate (CBR). Its recommended bitrate ranges vary with resolution, frame rate, and codec, so choose the matching combination in the official settings rather than treating one bitrate as universal.
If YouTube receives the stream but the preview or health indicators show trouble, confirm the encoder is current, inspect the source and CPU load, and test outbound upload connectivity. YouTube’s troubleshooting guide separates encoder or source issues from outbound network problems.

Common causes and practical fixes
- Old key remains in a script: replace the saved value with the current key from the intended Live Control Room stream, not just a value in a different interface.
- Key from the wrong stream: return to the intended broadcast’s Stream tab and copy that stream’s key.
- Key was reset: update every FFmpeg launch point that stored the previous key; a reset does not update local scripts automatically.
- URL and key were combined incorrectly: check whether the invocation expects separate inputs or
STREAM_URL/STREAM_NAME; do not supply the key twice. - RTMP/RTMPS mismatch: use the protocol and endpoint expected by the connection, including port 443 for RTMPS, and investigate certificate, timeout, or SNI symptoms as transport issues.
- Connection works but stream health is poor: then review codec, CBR, bitrate for the selected resolution and frame rate, keyframe interval, source quality, CPU load, and outbound upload.
- The software signs in without a stream key: this is a different authentication flow from entering a stream key. YouTube says software using sign-in without a key may need its vendor updated; do not apply that advice as a substitute for fixing a key-based FFmpeg setup.
