How to Fix OBS Dropping Frames on a 24/7 YouTube Stream in India

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If OBS shows network dropped frames, first test the connection between your computer and YouTube’s ingest server; lowering encoder load alone will not fix that symptom. Check OBS Stats, compare Ethernet with Wi-Fi, pause competing uploads, and test a sustainable bitrate before changing stream settings. “India” is not one network condition: your ISP, city, connection type, congestion and route to YouTube can all matter.

First, identify which kind of frames or buffering problem you have

In OBS, open View > Stats while streaming or running a test. Watch the separate counters rather than treating every report of “lag” as the same fault.

  • Dropped frames (network): the network is not reliably delivering frames to the remote ingest, or cannot sustain the configured bitrate. OBS may drop frames rather than let the stream build up a delay. OBS’s Help Portal explains the counter; its Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide says dropped frames or intermittent disconnections indicate a network issue between the computer and remote ingest server.
  • Rendering lag: OBS is not rendering frames in time. Investigate scene complexity, GPU load and rendering capacity rather than assuming an upload problem.
  • Skipped frames due to encoding lag: the encoder is not keeping up. Investigate encoder choice and system load separately from network delivery.
  • Viewer buffering: viewers may see buffering even when OBS’s network dropped-frames counter is not rising. YouTube’s Stream Buffering Troubleshooting guide discusses this distinct symptom.

If the network counter rises, use the network checks below. If it does not, do not change bitrate as a substitute for diagnosing rendering, encoding or viewer-side playback.

Work through the network checks in order

  1. Record a baseline. Note the time, OBS network dropped-frames counter, configured bitrate, connection type (Wi-Fi or Ethernet), YouTube stream health warnings and whether others are using the connection. For a 24/7 channel, record several incidents; a pattern may reveal whether drops follow busy hours or a particular setup.
  2. Compare Ethernet with Wi-Fi. If the streaming PC uses Wi-Fi, connect it to the router with Ethernet and repeat the same test. A cable is useful only as a way to make this comparison; it is not a guaranteed fix. If the wired result improves, investigate the wireless link, interference or local congestion.
  3. Pause competing traffic. Temporarily stop cloud backups, file uploads and other sustained household traffic. If that changes the result, the connection may be sharing limited upload capacity. Include ordinary household use in later tests rather than relying on an artificially quiet network.
  4. Check VPN and filtering software. OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide includes VPN and security/network-filter software among factors to investigate. Test one change at a time and compare results; improvement points to a changed path or filter, not necessarily a definitive root cause.
  5. Test upload capacity, then test the actual stream. YouTube Help recommends running a speed test to test upload bitrate. A single speed-test result is not proof of sustained capacity to YouTube’s ingest server. Test with the intended audio, resolution, frame rate and representative motion, and repeat at the times when the 24/7 stream is most likely to encounter trouble.
  6. Compare the destination path if possible. If OBS offers another YouTube ingest option, test it; compare OBS logs and YouTube stream health. A comparison with another destination can also help separate a general connection problem from a path-specific one. Do not assume a particular Indian ISP or region is responsible without measurements.

Set a bitrate and encoder configuration the connection can sustain

Use YouTube’s current live encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions page for the resolution and frame rate you intend to stream. Its bitrate recommendations are tied to those choices, so there is no single suitable bitrate for every channel. Choose a setting your connection can reliably sustain at the relevant time of day, with normal household traffic included, rather than targeting the highest possible image quality.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Rate control: use CBR (constant bitrate), as YouTube recommends.
  • Keyframe interval: use two seconds; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds.
  • Codec: use a codec supported for your setup and confirm the current YouTube guidance. The page lists H.264, HEVC and AV1 where applicable; availability depends on the encoder and setup.
  • Resolution and frame rate: choose them together with a bitrate from YouTube’s current table. If the connection cannot reliably carry the chosen combination, reduce the streaming load and test again.
  • Audio and motion: include both in your test. A static screen is not a meaningful stand-in for the movement and audio of the actual 24/7 programme.

Make one change at a time and check whether network drops stop under representative conditions. YouTube recommends testing the upload bitrate and testing the stream before going live; a short successful check does not establish that a connection will remain stable indefinitely.

Use dynamic bitrate only as a fallback

OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide documents Dynamically change bitrate to manage congestion as a way to lower bitrate when the connection cannot keep up. It may reduce drops, but it does not repair the underlying network issue, and the resulting video quality can fall as bitrate is reduced. Treat it as a continuity-versus-quality trade-off, not the first diagnostic step.

When the problem persists in India

There is no single India-wide explanation for dropped frames: ISP, city, access type, router, local congestion and route to YouTube ingest vary. The OBS and YouTube guidance here is general; it does not establish current city-level performance or identify a particular provider as the cause.

If a wired comparison, reduced competing traffic and a sustainable bitrate do not resolve the drops, save the OBS log and your incident notes. Give your ISP the timestamps, connection type, observed bitrate and evidence that the problem persists on Ethernet, and ask it to investigate the route or peering to YouTube ingest. OBS likewise advises contacting the ISP if connection problems persist after its troubleshooting steps.

Plan for 24/7 operation, not just a successful test

  • Keep a log of drop times, OBS counters, bitrate, YouTube health warnings and connection conditions so recurring patterns are visible.
  • Preflight with representative video motion and audio, including the settings intended for the live channel.
  • Have an operator able to review alerts and respond. OBS and YouTube’s setup guidance do not promise uninterrupted 24/7 service.
  • Judge changes over busy household hours as well as quiet periods; stability during one speed test or short preview may not reflect the full stream day.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is to keep uploaded videos playing on YouTube without leaving a streaming computer running at home, StreamNeo is a cloud option. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, then go live; the service loops the uploaded video from the cloud. It streams to YouTube, not from a live camera.
