To stream a vMix playlist to YouTube Live, build either a List input for a sequence of media files or a vMix PlayList for sequencing production inputs, connect vMix to the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio, then start the stream. For a scheduled YouTube event, you must also click Go live in Live Control Room after the preview appears. vMix can loop playback, but it does not provide time-of-day scheduling.
Choose between vMix List and PlayList
These features both automate playback, but they work at different levels. Choose the one that matches what you want to sequence.

Use List for a simple run of files
A List groups multiple media files into one input. Add files in the List editing window, or drag and drop them there; M3U files are also supported. Leave Auto Next enabled to advance through the files, and enable Loop if playback should return to the first file after the last one. Randomise shuffles the order, and disabled items are skipped. The List does not require all videos to be loaded at once, which vMix says can save system resources.

Use PlayList for inputs and transitions
PlayList sequences inputs already available in the production. Add inputs from Available Inputs to PlayList, then set options such as the starting position, duration, transition, and transition time for each item. Turn on looping if the sequence should repeat. In Manual Mode, PlayList waits for the operator to click Next instead of advancing automatically. A List input can itself be included in a PlayList when you need both file sequencing and production-level transitions.
Consult the vMix PlayList documentation for the controls. Menu labels and availability can vary by installed vMix version; the available official documentation spans Help 26 and Help 28.

Connect vMix to YouTube Live
- Create or schedule the event. Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and create a stream or schedule one. Copy the server URL and stream key shown for the stream. Treat the key like a password: do not show it in screenshots or share it publicly. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains this connection workflow.
- Enter the connection details in vMix. Open vMix Streaming Settings and enter the server URL and stream key in the destination fields, or choose a YouTube destination if one is available in your installed version. vMix’s Streaming Settings documentation recommends FFMPEG and documents H.264, AV1, or HEVC video and AAC audio support. Select settings suited to your actual production and available connection; the documentation does not establish one universal setting for every stream.
- Start the playlist playback. Start the List input or configured PlayList in vMix. Check that the intended input is in the production output before streaming.
- Start sending the stream. Start streaming from vMix. For a scheduled YouTube event, wait for the preview to appear in Live Control Room, then click Go live. With an immediate encoder workflow, YouTube says starting the encoder brings the stream live.
- End the event cleanly. For a scheduled stream, click End Stream in Live Control Room and stop sending content from the encoder. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived and can be found on the Live tab in Studio; that guidance is a platform rule, not a guarantee for longer streams.
What vMix playlist automation does—and does not—schedule
vMix’s List and PlayList can provide back-to-back playback, looping, and transitions, but they do not start a stream or switch content at specified clock times. vMix states that it is primarily designed for live streaming single events and does not support time-of-day scheduling; its scheduling article was last updated January 17, 2025. The same article describes a third-party vMix Scheduler project as unmaintained, so it should not be treated as a dependable current solution without independent verification.
If your plan depends on a stream beginning at a future time, distinguish playlist automation from event launch: YouTube can provide a scheduled event page, but the encoder still has to send its feed, and the scheduled workflow requires an operator to click Go live once the preview appears.

Troubleshooting
- The files do not advance: Check that Auto Next is enabled in the List, or that PlayList is not in Manual Mode. In Manual Mode, click Next to advance.
- The sequence stops after the final item: Enable Loop in the List or PlayList settings if you want it to restart. A one-pass sequence is expected when looping is off.
- An item is missing from playback: Check whether it is disabled in the List, since disabled items are skipped. For PlayList, confirm the intended input was added from Available Inputs.
- YouTube does not show the vMix preview: Confirm the server URL and stream key match the event in YouTube Studio, and that vMix is sending the intended production output. If you are using a scheduled event, the preview must appear before the Go live step.
- The stream will not launch at a specified clock time: That is not a function of vMix List or PlayList. Arrange for an operator to start the encoder and complete YouTube’s scheduled-event launch step.
