Neither Streamlabs Desktop nor OBS Studio has a documented, proven reliability advantage for running a 24/7 YouTube stream. Choose based on how you build scenes and overlays, how comfortable you are configuring software, and whether your computer and network can sustain your actual workload. Both are desktop approaches: your computer, power, internet connection, and streaming software must keep working. If you want the stream to continue with your computer off, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos from the cloud instead.
Which is better for a 24/7 YouTube stream?
There is no official head-to-head endurance test establishing that one application stays live longer than the other under identical conditions. Neither application’s reviewed documentation promises uninterrupted operation. A 24/7 stream depends on the complete setup: computer and encoder load, scene complexity, power, network stability, YouTube’s ingest, and whether someone can monitor and respond to problems.
| Consideration | Streamlabs Desktop | OBS Studio |
|---|---|---|
| Getting started | Its quick-start flow covers onboarding, linking a channel, video settings, overlays, and testing; YouTube is listed as a supported platform. | Its official system requirements describe supported operating systems and graphics requirements. The cited material does not establish an equivalent guided onboarding experience. |
| Workload planning | Streamlabs says requirements vary with content, other running programs, and hardware. | OBS says encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity affect CPU requirements, and compatible specifications alone do not guarantee streaming capability. |
| 24/7 reliability comparison | Not established by an official matched test. | Not established by an official matched test. |
Streamlabs publishes a minimum of 8 GB RAM and recommends 16 GB or more, along with a recommended SSD of 512 GB or more and Ethernet. These are Streamlabs’ published specifications, last updated April 8, 2026—not universal guarantees for every 24/7 scene or workload. OBS’s requirements page is dated August 25, 2021; check the current application and operating-system requirements before installing. The OBS Project cautions: “Having a compatible system does not guarantee that it is capable of streaming or recording using OBS Studio.”
Choose Streamlabs Desktop if its guided workflow suits you
Its documented onboarding and setup steps can be useful if you want a guided route to linking YouTube, configuring video, adding overlays, and testing. That is a workflow distinction, not evidence that it is more reliable or easier on hardware during an unattended multi-day stream.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Choose OBS Studio if its configuration model fits your setup
OBS provides its own requirements guidance, but the actual load depends on what you encode and render. A simple static scene and a layered scene with animated elements are different workloads. Do not assume OBS is lighter—or heavier—than Streamlabs without testing both on the same computer with the same scene, encoder, resolution, and frame rate.
Can OBS or Streamlabs run 24/7?
They can be used to send a live feed to YouTube, but the reviewed official sources do not establish guaranteed unattended 24/7 operation, automatic restart behavior, or recovery after software or network failure for either desktop application. For a computer-based stream, plan for failures rather than treating “go live” as a set-and-forget guarantee.

- Use a computer with enough headroom for the chosen encoder, resolution, frame rate, scene, and other running software.
- Keep power and the network connection stable; use wired Ethernet where practical. Ethernet is a sensible recommendation, not a guarantee against interruption.
- Test the complete stream and, if downtime matters, test a backup encoder or recovery procedure before relying on it.
- Monitor YouTube’s stream health and audio/video, and check that local archive files are growing if you are recording locally.
YouTube warns, “A disruption on your connectivity could mean a broken stream.” Its backup-encoder instructions are a recommendation to test a backup path, not a promise of seamless failover in every setup.
Set YouTube’s encoder settings for a stable stream
Use YouTube’s current live-encoder guidance rather than assuming either application’s defaults are right for every channel. YouTube supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 over RTMP/RTMPS. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension to RTMP, where supported.

| H.264 output | YouTube minimum bitrate | YouTube recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
These figures are YouTube Help’s stated H.264 recommendations; its page does not state a publication year in the supplied material. The table is not a universal setting prescription: choose output your content, encoder, computer, and available upload capacity can sustain. Check YouTube’s current codec-specific table for other resolutions, frame rates, and codecs.
Reserve upload capacity
YouTube recommends keeping total streaming bitrate below available upload bandwidth and allowing about 20% headroom. Run an upload speed test, as YouTube advises, and assess the connection at the time and location the stream will run. If using a primary and backup encoder, account for both bitrates as YouTube’s guidance specifies. Avoid saturating the connection with other uploads or users while streaming.

Use the stream key carefully
In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the stream and copy its stream key into the streaming software’s YouTube/stream settings. Treat the key like a password: do not share it or show it in a recording or screenshot. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube and update the encoder before going live. Confirm the selected ingest protocol and key match the YouTube setup; exact labels can vary by application version.

- Confirm channel eligibility. YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have live-stream restrictions in the prior 90 days.
- Choose a realistic output. Select resolution and frame rate based on the actual scene, encoding workload, and sustained upload speed; use YouTube’s bitrate guidance and headroom recommendation.
- Configure and secure the key. Use RTMPS where supported, set CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, and keep the YouTube stream key private.
- Test the full scene. Check video movement, overlays, audio levels, and synchronization in the Live Control Room preview and stream health indicators before making the broadcast public.
- Check recording and recovery. If recording locally, verify the archive file is growing. Test the backup encoder or failover process if downtime matters; do not assume a backup will switch seamlessly.
- Rehearse on the actual setup. Run a long-duration rehearsal with the real computer, scene collection, and network. Official guidance emphasizes testing and monitoring but does not prescribe a particular rehearsal length.
- Set up the network sensibly. Prefer Ethernet where practical and keep other devices or transfers from using the capacity reserved for the stream. An Ethernet cable can help make a wired connection; it cannot prevent every outage.
YouTube’s event guidance says to set up the encoder at least two hours ahead and start it at least 15 minutes before a scheduled event. Those timings are event-planning guidance, not a formal 24/7 reliability standard, but they are useful reminders to leave time for a full preflight.

Copyright and reused content still apply to long streams
Streaming continuously does not change YouTube’s copyright rules or make content you do not have rights to safe to broadcast. Use video, music, and other material you own or are authorized to stream, and review YouTube’s policies before scheduling a long-running channel stream. Reusing material can also affect monetization eligibility; adding a live label or looping a video does not itself establish that a channel meets YouTube’s monetization policies. Keep records of licenses and permissions, and review any claims or restrictions shown in YouTube Studio.
