Vimeo Extended streaming keeps a Vimeo RTMP event running while an encoder sends a signal, but Vimeo says Extended streams cannot simulcast to YouTube. To keep a YouTube channel live around the clock, use a separate YouTube workflow; if you need both platforms continuously, you will need an independently validated setup that sends to each service.
First, choose the workflow that matches your goal
| Workflow | What it does | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Vimeo Extended streaming | Keeps a Vimeo RTMP event active while an encoder continues sending video. It requires Vimeo Enterprise with the Extended streaming add-on. | It cannot simulcast, record, or use DVR. |
| Vimeo event simulcast to YouTube | Sends a regular Vimeo event to YouTube through account integration or a custom RTMP destination. | It is a separate finite-event workflow and cannot be used while Extended streaming is enabled. |
| A continuous YouTube stream | Sends a continuing encoder feed directly to YouTube, or uses a cloud service that loops uploaded video to YouTube. | Vimeo’s Extended mode is not the mechanism for this. A dual-platform continuous setup needs its own compatibility and reliability checks. |
Vimeo’s standard event limits are up to 12 hours per stream on Advanced and Premium, and 12 hours per stream on Enterprise unless the Extended streaming add-on is enabled. Vimeo lists up to two simultaneous streams on Advanced and three on Premium or Enterprise. These are the limits shown in Vimeo Help Center’s “FAQ: Live events”; check current account terms before planning around them.
Set up a continuous Vimeo event with Extended streaming
Use these steps when the continuous event is meant to run on Vimeo. Vimeo describes Extended streaming as an Enterprise add-on for RTMP events, not Live production mode. Its “FAQ: Extended streaming mode” says the event remains active while the encoder signal is incoming and must be ended manually.
- Confirm eligibility. You need a Vimeo Enterprise account with the Extended streaming add-on. Vimeo says to contact your account manager or sales team to enable it.
- Create a Vimeo live event. Choose an RTMP encoder workflow; Extended streaming is not available for Live production mode.
- Enable the mode in the event settings. Open Production, turn off Record event and DVR, then turn on Extended stream. Labels can vary with Vimeo’s interface updates.
- Configure and start the encoder. Send a stable video and audio feed to Vimeo’s RTMP ingest. Keep the encoder and its internet connection running; the event remains active only while Vimeo receives the encoder signal.
- Monitor the feed and end it deliberately. Verify picture, sound, network stability, and your recovery procedure before relying on a continuous event. To stop the event, end it manually in Vimeo.
Vimeo encoder limits
Vimeo lists maximum encoder limits of 5,000 kbps and 30 fps for Advanced and Premium, and 9,000 kbps and 60 fps for Enterprise. These are plan ceilings, not universal recommended settings; select a bitrate and frame rate that the encoder, connection, and source can sustain.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Plan for no Vimeo archive or DVR
Extended streaming disables recording and DVR, and Vimeo says Extended streams cannot be saved in the library. If you need an archive, arrange a local or external recording workflow and test it separately rather than assuming Vimeo will save the event.
Send a regular Vimeo event to YouTube
Vimeo’s ordinary simulcast feature can send a finite Vimeo event to YouTube. Vimeo lists eligibility as Advanced or Premium, or Enterprise with Events; YouTube verification is also required. This is not compatible with Vimeo Extended streaming.
Option A: connect YouTube in Vimeo
- Create or open the Vimeo event and go to its Destinations panel.
- Choose the YouTube destination and authorize the YouTube account when prompted.
- Set the YouTube privacy option for the event, then enable the YouTube destination toggle.
- Start the event through the chosen encoder workflow and confirm that the destination is receiving video in YouTube Live Control Room.
Option B: use a custom RTMP destination
- In YouTube Studio, create or open the scheduled live stream and copy its stream URL and stream key.
- In the Vimeo event’s destinations settings, add a custom RTMP destination and enter the YouTube ingest URL and key.
- Start the Vimeo event and check the incoming feed in YouTube Live Control Room. A scheduled YouTube stream fed by RTMP may still require you to press Go live in YouTube Live Control Room.
Vimeo documents up to 10 integrated destinations and up to 20 simultaneous custom RTMP destinations for ordinary simulcast. Those destination counts do not remove the incompatibility with Extended streaming.

What you need to stream directly to YouTube
Check channel eligibility first
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. First-time live-stream enablement can take up to 24 hours. Check eligibility and enable live streaming before scheduling a launch; the wait is a YouTube account requirement, not a Vimeo setting.
Use YouTube’s encoder settings as the baseline
YouTube’s encoder guide supports RTMP or RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate, and up to 60 fps. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds, and recommends RTMPS for encrypted ingest. Choose settings appropriate to the resolution and connection rather than treating maximum values as a target.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume that a 24/7 broadcast will produce one complete archive under that policy.

If the same 24/7 program must appear on Vimeo and YouTube
Vimeo’s documentation does not provide a way to run an Extended stream and simulcast it to YouTube; it expressly says simulcasting is unavailable for Extended streams. A separate encoder architecture might send output to both platforms independently, but both services’ ingest, account, duration, and operational requirements would need to be checked for that design. The available documentation does not establish a tested relay or dual-output configuration.
Troubleshoot the setup
- Vimeo Extended streaming is unavailable: Confirm that the account has Enterprise and the Extended streaming add-on, and that the event uses an RTMP encoder workflow rather than Live production mode.
- YouTube is not offered as a destination for an Extended event: This is the documented limitation, not a destination-count problem. Use a regular Vimeo event for finite-event simulcasting, or plan a separately validated continuous architecture.
- YouTube will not accept the stream: Verify the channel, confirm live streaming is enabled, and check the correct stream URL and key in the encoder or Vimeo RTMP destination. A first-time enablement can take up to 24 hours.
- The scheduled YouTube event receives video but does not go live: Open YouTube Live Control Room and check whether it requires a manual Go live action for the RTMP-fed event.
- The image or audio is unstable: Check the encoder’s outgoing bitrate, frame rate, keyframe interval, and network capacity against the destination’s limits. Vimeo’s plan ceilings are not proof that a connection can sustain those settings.
- The Vimeo Extended event ends or loses its feed: Check whether the encoder stopped sending video or the connection failed. Extended mode depends on an incoming encoder signal; test the encoder’s restart and network-recovery behavior before operating unattended.
- No recording appears: Extended streaming disables recording and DVR. Use and verify a separate recording workflow if an archive is required.

Keep copyright and YouTube policy in view
A technically stable stream can still face copyright or policy action. Use only material you have the rights to stream, and review YouTube’s current live-stream rules and any restrictions on your channel before broadcasting. Replaying uploaded content does not itself establish that you have permission to use it or that it meets YouTube’s monetization policies.
