Choose Vimeo’s native prerecorded-event feature if your uploaded video should play automatically at a scheduled time. Choose OBS when you need an encoder to send a live feed—but OBS is not the trigger for Vimeo’s scheduled prerecorded playback. If YouTube is the destination, Vimeo can simulcast to it, but a scheduled YouTube event may still require a separate manual Go Live action in YouTube Live Control Room.
Which workflow fits your goal?
| Decision point | Vimeo native prerecorded event | OBS encoder workflow |
|---|---|---|
| What sends the video? | A video in your Vimeo library is loaded into an event and played by Vimeo. | OBS sends an encoded live feed to a destination using its stream URL and key. |
| Can it start scheduled prerecorded playback automatically? | Yes, through Vimeo’s web-based production tool, subject to feature access and scheduling limits. | No. Vimeo explicitly excludes external encoders from its automatic scheduled prerecorded-event feature. |
| What does the operator do? | The basic video-to-event flow requires the Owner to start the event. The separate scheduled mode can start automatically when configured and eligible. | Configure and start the encoder. If simulcasting to a scheduled YouTube RTMP event through Vimeo, you may also need to click Go Live in YouTube Live Control Room. |
| Best fit | An uploaded Vimeo video that should play as a native Vimeo event, especially when scheduled playback is the priority. | A production that needs an encoder to send a composed live feed. It is not a substitute for Vimeo’s web-studio scheduled prerecorded mode. |
These are workflow distinctions, not a quality or reliability ranking. Vimeo and YouTube’s help documentation explains setup and feature behavior; it does not establish a controlled head-to-head winner for picture quality, latency, reliability, cost, or audience results.
Use Vimeo’s native scheduled prerecorded mode
Check feature eligibility first
Vimeo documents automatic scheduled prerecorded events for Advanced or Premium accounts, or Enterprise accounts with the Events feature. The mode is for live events and webinars, not venues, and it uses Vimeo’s web-based production tool rather than an external encoder. Plan packaging and interface labels can change, so check current account access before planning an event. Vimeo’s scheduling instructions describe the current feature requirements.
Configure the scheduled playback
- Open the Vimeo web-based production tool for the live event or webinar.
- Choose Prerecorded event, then select the video segments to play.
- Set the event date and time. The scheduled start must be at least one minute in the future; a nearer start will not work.
- Review the selected segments and schedule. The videos play in full and scenes transition automatically.
- Check that the account’s concurrent-event limit will allow the event to start. If concurrency limits are reached, Vimeo says earlier scheduled start times take priority.
If the event later moves from prerecorded playback to live scenes, the event returns to manual mode; an operator must end it. Automatic playback therefore does not mean every subsequent live-production step is unattended.

Use Vimeo to play a video as an event without scheduled automation
Vimeo also documents a separate flow that creates a live event from an uploaded video. An Owner opens the video’s settings, creates the live event, and starts it; the video is preloaded into the first scene. This is not the same as scheduling automatic playback.
The documented flow requires Advanced or Premium, or Enterprise with Events; other plans may let you try the flow but cannot go live. It does not support Vimeo Stock purchases, and uploaded subtitles or captions are not displayed during live playback. See Vimeo’s video-to-live-event instructions for the account flow.

Use OBS when an encoder-driven feed is what you need
OBS is an encoder: it sends a live feed to a service using that service’s destination URL and stream key. Vimeo’s documented OBS connection workflow calls for a custom service, the event’s RTMP URL and key, applying the OBS bandwidth-test configuration, and starting the stream. That workflow is distinct from Vimeo’s web-based automatic prerecorded mode, which explicitly does not support external encoders. Vimeo’s OBS guide is specifically for Vimeo OTT and says OTT live streaming is available only to Growth and Enterprise sellers; do not assume that product-specific plan statement applies to every Vimeo live product.
If your source is a prerecorded video, an encoder workflow means the encoder sends a live feed; it does not make Vimeo’s web-based scheduled prerecorded feature run through OBS. Schedule the YouTube event separately if advance discovery and reminders matter, and confirm how the encoder start and destination’s Go Live state interact.

Send a Vimeo event to YouTube
Vimeo documents two ways to simulcast an event to YouTube: a direct YouTube integration or an RTMP destination configured with the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio. Its guide describes up to 10 destinations through direct integration and up to 20 simultaneous destinations through RTMP. These are Vimeo-documented destination limits, not a promise of a particular stream outcome. The YouTube channel must be verified, and Vimeo’s setup guide says to check that the account has no live-stream restriction before configuring the event. See Vimeo’s YouTube simulcast instructions.
For a scheduled YouTube stream sent through Vimeo as an RTMP destination, Vimeo warns that the feed arriving may not itself put the event live: you may need to select Go Live in YouTube Live Control Room. Treat scheduling in YouTube, sending a feed from Vimeo or OBS, and changing YouTube’s live state as separate controls.

Schedule and prepare the YouTube event
YouTube scheduling lets viewers find an upcoming event and receive reminders; it does not configure or start the encoder for you. YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. Its guidance recommends using RTMPS, testing upload capacity, previewing the incoming signal, and monitoring the stream. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance and YouTube’s live-streaming preparation guidance.
- YouTube recommends setting up the encoder at least two hours before the event and starting it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled time.
- YouTube recommends keeping 20% upload-bandwidth headroom. These are preparation recommendations, not performance guarantees.
- Preview the signal in Live Control Room and check both picture and audio. Test with representative movement and sound rather than relying only on a static image.
- For a low-risk rehearsal, use a private or unlisted test where available, and verify which account and destination are selected before the public event.
Troubleshoot the common failure points
The Vimeo prerecorded event does not start
- Scheduled less than a minute ahead: reschedule it with at least one minute of lead time.
- Concurrent-event limit reached: check active and scheduled events and the account’s concurrency allowance; Vimeo says earlier scheduled starts take priority.
- Wrong production mode: automatic prerecorded playback must be configured in Vimeo’s web production tool, not sent through OBS.
The YouTube event is scheduled but viewers do not see it live
- Encoder feed has not arrived: confirm OBS or Vimeo is sending to the correct YouTube URL and stream key, then check the preview in Live Control Room.
- Manual live action remains: for a scheduled YouTube RTMP event simulcast through Vimeo, check whether YouTube Live Control Room is waiting for you to select Go Live.
- Account eligibility: verify the YouTube channel and check for a live-streaming restriction; confirm Vimeo’s account has no live restriction for the setup.
The stream is unstable or the audio/video is wrong
- Insufficient upload capacity: test the connection and preserve YouTube’s recommended 20% bandwidth headroom.
- Incorrect encoder destination: recheck the RTMP URL and stream key, and confirm the intended service is selected.
- Unnoticed signal issue: preview before the start and monitor the stream after it goes live, checking sound as well as video.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is a YouTube channel that keeps looping uploaded videos rather than a one-time scheduled event, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It streams uploaded video to YouTube, not a camera feed.
