To use a YouTube stream key with AWS Elemental MediaLive, copy the current YouTube Live server URL and stream key from YouTube Studio, then enter them separately in MediaLive’s RTMP output: the URL goes in the destination field and the key goes in Stream Name. Start the MediaLive channel to send its encoder feed. If the YouTube stream is scheduled, check for the preview in Live Control Room and select Go live when it appears.
Before you start
- You need access to the YouTube channel’s Live Control Room and permission to configure its live stream.
- You need an AWS Elemental MediaLive channel configured with an input and an output. This guide covers connecting its output to YouTube; it does not configure a camera, source input, or every encoding parameter.
- Treat the stream key as a credential. Do not publish it, include it in screenshots, or share it unnecessarily.
Get the current YouTube server URL and stream key
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go live to open Live Control Room.
- Open the Stream tab. Create a stream or load an existing stream configuration. YouTube can load a previous stream’s settings, including its key.
- Copy the server URL and stream key shown for the stream you intend to use. Use this current pair together; do not substitute an endpoint from an old example or another streaming service.
YouTube supplies both values, and both are required. Keep the key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to that stream. If it is exposed, replace or rotate it in YouTube Studio and update the MediaLive configuration to match.
Enter the YouTube values in MediaLive
- In the AWS Elemental MediaLive console, edit the channel you want to use.
- Add an RTMP output group to the channel.
- In RTMP destination A, enter the YouTube server URL in the destination URL field.
- Enter the YouTube stream key in the separate Stream Name field. Do not append it to the destination URL unless the current MediaLive field instructions specifically require a different format.
- Configure the video and audio output to suit your source and YouTube’s current requirements. AWS’s tutorial uses H.264 video and AAC audio as an example, and says output dimensions should not exceed input dimensions. Those are example choices, not a complete or universal YouTube encoding preset.
- Save or update the channel configuration.
The distinction between the two destination fields matters: MediaLive models the RTMP endpoint and stream name separately. The server URL is the destination; the key is the stream name.
Choose protocol and encoding settings deliberately
RTMPS for secure ingest
YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension to RTMP, for live ingest. Use the ingest URL YouTube currently presents and confirm that the MediaLive output you select supports that protocol. Do not assume an RTMP URL from an older setup is interchangeable with the current RTMPS URL.

Automatic or manual resolution and frame rate
YouTube recommends automatic resolution and frame-rate detection by default. If you need a fixed manual setting, YouTube says to create a custom stream key and enable manual stream-resolution settings. Choose a format the source and MediaLive output can actually provide; a requested output cannot add detail absent from the input.
HDR and HLS
HDR can change the protocol and codec decision. YouTube recommends H.265 over RTMP(S) for HDR. If an encoder cannot provide the needed capabilities through RTMP, YouTube says HLS may be considered. AWS documents an HLS ingest workflow for a particular 4K HDR case, but its URL pattern, segment length, H.265 profile, bitrate, frame rate, and other values are worked-example details—not universal settings. Check current YouTube and MediaLive guidance before adapting them.

Select codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and protocol together, based on source capability and current YouTube guidance. The available evidence does not establish a single bitrate or resolution that is right for every stream.
Start MediaLive and bring the YouTube stream live
- In the MediaLive console, open Channels and start the configured channel.
- For a scheduled YouTube stream, wait for the encoder signal and preview to appear in Live Control Room.
- When the preview is present and the stream is ready, select Go live in Live Control Room. Starting MediaLive sends the feed; it does not replace this scheduled-stream confirmation step.
- For a non-scheduled encoder stream, YouTube’s instructions say to start the encoder to send the stream live.
- When finished, stop sending content. For a scheduled stream, also select End stream in YouTube.
Troubleshoot a missing preview or failed start
- No encoder preview appears: Check that the current YouTube server URL is in the destination URL field and its matching key is in Stream Name. A stale, mistyped, or mismatched pair is an initial configuration check.
- The channel is not sending a feed: Check the MediaLive channel status and confirm the channel and RTMP output group are running.
- The preview appears, but viewers cannot see the scheduled stream: Select Go live in Live Control Room after confirming the preview.
- The key may have been exposed: Replace or rotate it in YouTube Studio, then update MediaLive with the new key. Do not continue using a key that should no longer be trusted.
- The output is rejected or does not match expectations: Recheck the current protocol and encoding choices against YouTube’s guidance and the capabilities of the input and MediaLive output. Avoid carrying over settings from an unrelated or older example.
Account for MediaLive costs
AWS notes that output width, height, frame rate, and bitrate affect MediaLive cost. The cost depends on the actual channel configuration, so check current AWS pricing for your region and setup rather than relying on a generic estimate.
