For a reliable starting point, send IBM Video Streaming a progressive 720p, 25 or 30 fps H.264 Main feed at 1,200–4,000 kbps, with AAC-LC audio at 128 kbps and 44.1 or 48 kHz. Set a fixed one-second keyframe interval for IBM’s typical 720p input; IBM’s broader guidance is 1–2 seconds. Prefer RTMPS, use a wired connection, and keep the target bitrate at or below half your available upload bandwidth. YouTube’s preferred settings differ: for 720p30 H.264 it recommends 8 Mbps, CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, so test any shared feed rather than assuming one profile is ideal for both platforms.
Recommended settings at a glance
| Setting | IBM Video Streaming | YouTube | Practical choice |
|---|---|---|---|
| Resolution and frame rate | 1280×720 at 25 or 30 fps for typical cloud-transcoding input | For 720p30 H.264, its bitrate table specifies 3 Mbps minimum and 8 Mbps recommended | Use 720p30 when the source is 30 fps; match the source frame rate or downscale, and do not upscale. |
| Video codec | H.264 Main recommended for typical 720p input; general guidance also allows H.264 High | H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 supported | H.264 is the straightforward shared choice for one feed. |
| Video bitrate | 1,200–4,000 kbps for typical 720p cloud-transcoding input | For 720p30 H.264: 3 Mbps minimum, 8 Mbps recommended | The IBM range overlaps YouTube’s minimum, but remains below YouTube’s recommendation except at the upper edge. Test picture quality and ingest health. |
| Keyframe interval | One second in the 720p baseline; fixed 1–2 seconds in general guidance | Two seconds recommended; no more than four seconds | One second fits within YouTube’s stated maximum but is not its preferred interval. |
| Audio | AAC-LC, 128 kbps, 44.1 or 48 kHz, mono or stereo | AAC or MP3; 128 kbps stereo, 44.1 kHz stereo | AAC at 128 kbps is a compatible shared setting. |
| Rate control | The cited baseline does not specify a mode | CBR | Use CBR for the YouTube encoder profile; validate an IBM-specific profile if configuring separate outputs. |
| Ingest protocol | RTMP and RTMPS supported through the channel’s ingest endpoint | RTMP/RTMPS; YouTube recommends RTMPS | Prefer RTMPS where available, and use a separate URL and key for each platform. |
These are platform configuration recommendations, not an uptime guarantee. IBM’s settings page recommends sending a single HD stream at 720p for most applications. Its 1080p input range is 4,000–8,000 kbps at 25/30 fps; higher resolutions require more encoder capacity and bandwidth. IBM multi-quality output depends on account configuration, selected output qualities and ingest quality, so confirm the feature is enabled in the channel’s Broadcast Settings. IBM’s encoding and connection guidance has further details.
How to configure IBM and YouTube
- Get IBM’s channel credentials. In IBM Video Streaming, open the target channel’s Broadcast Settings, reveal Encoder Settings, and copy its RTMP URL and stream key. Keep the key private: it authorizes publishing to that channel. Select RTMPS if the account provides a secure ingest endpoint.
- Get YouTube’s credentials separately. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the stream and copy its stream URL and key into the YouTube output configuration. Treat this key as an encoder credential. IBM’s URL and key do not substitute for YouTube’s.
- Choose one shared or separate profiles. A shared H.264/AAC feed is the simplest overlap. Set the common parameters in the table, then account for the bitrate tradeoff: IBM’s 720p range tops out at YouTube’s 8 Mbps recommendation, while most of that IBM range is below it. If your encoder supports per-destination outputs or separate encodes, configure profiles for each platform and ensure your encoder and connection can sustain them.
- Check the source and connection. Use 16:9 progressive video, match the source frame rate or downscale rather than upscale, and avoid interlaced video. IBM prefers wired Ethernet and recommends a target stream bitrate no higher than half of available upload bandwidth. Allow capacity for other network traffic as well.
- Test before relying on the stream. Send a representative scene with motion and audio. Confirm that each destination receives the intended feed, inspect video and audio health, and verify that local recording storage is available and the recording file is growing. YouTube recommends encoder testing and monitoring stream health in Live Control Room. Check playback on representative viewer devices.
- Test the restart and archive workflow. If YouTube archives matter, rehearse ending and restarting the stream before the 12-hour mark, check the handoff behavior and audience impact, and keep a local recording as backup.
Managing a continuous channel and its archives
A channel that broadcasts continuously is not necessarily one continuous YouTube archive. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived and warns that streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If retaining each segment matters, plan to end and restart before 12 hours and preserve a local recording. YouTube does not promise a seamless segment handoff, so test it with your audience and setup before production. See YouTube’s live stream archiving guidance.
Neither the platform settings nor this workflow establishes that a particular IBM account or encoder can run indefinitely without failure. Test the full setup—including restart, local recording, audio, playback and recovery—before depending on it. YouTube’s bitrate guidance varies with resolution, frame rate and codec; consult its current table for profiles other than 720p30 H.264 rather than reusing that figure. YouTube’s encoder settings also cover recommended configuration and stream-health checks.

Common problems and fixes
- YouTube reports a weak or unstable stream: Check Live Control Room health, available upload bandwidth and whether other network use is competing with the stream. IBM recommends wired Ethernet and keeping the target bitrate at or below half of available upload capacity. Reduce the profile bitrate or network load if needed, then test again.
- Picture quality is poor on YouTube: A bitrate inside IBM’s 720p input range may still be below YouTube’s 8 Mbps recommendation for 720p30 H.264. Test the highest practical shared setting within IBM’s range, or use separate outputs if your encoder and connection can sustain them.
- Video looks soft, stretched or uneven: Check that the source is progressive and 16:9, that the output matches or downscales from the source, and that frame rate matches the recording. Do not upscale a lower-resolution source.
- Audio is missing or incompatible: Confirm the encoder is sending AAC audio at 128 kbps and an accepted 44.1 or 48 kHz sample rate for the IBM profile; check that the correct audio source is selected and that audio meters move during the test.
- A destination will not connect: Recheck that the URL and stream key belong to that exact platform and channel, that the key has no transcription errors, and that you selected the matching RTMPS endpoint when using secure ingest. Regenerate credentials only through the platform’s own controls if a key may have been exposed.
- A YouTube archive is missing or incomplete: Check whether the stream exceeded 12 hours. For future broadcasts, schedule a restart before that point and maintain a local recording; do not assume YouTube will capture an overlong stream.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a YouTube channel built around uploaded recordings or a playlist, StreamNeo is an alternative to maintaining your own encoder: upload the video, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so no computer, OBS or home internet connection has to stay on. It supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encoding or quality tiers, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. Start the free first day with StreamNeo.
