For most technically capable creators who already own a suitable computer, OBS is the simpler starting point for a 24/7 YouTube stream. It is free, flexible desktop software, but your computer, power and internet connection remain part of the operation. AWS Elemental MediaLive moves video processing into AWS and has a more resilient channel design, but it requires configuration and incurs charges while running. Neither option alone guarantees that a YouTube broadcast will stay live continuously.
If your actual goal is to loop uploaded videos rather than produce a live show, StreamNeo is a different, cloud-based YouTube option: upload videos, add your stream key and go live.
OBS vs MediaLive: the practical difference
Both OBS Studio and AWS Elemental MediaLive are listed by YouTube among verified encoders. YouTube’s setup guide says to provide the encoder with the stream URL and stream key. The listing means they are verified products, not products made or endorsed by YouTube. See YouTube’s encoder guide.
| Decision point | OBS Studio | AWS Elemental MediaLive |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Free, open-source desktop recording and livestreaming software with scenes, sources, transitions, audio mixing and configuration controls. OBS Project | A managed cloud live-video processing service; YouTube lists support up to 4Kp60 HEVC. YouTube encoder guide |
| Where it runs | On a Windows, macOS or Linux computer you operate. | As configured channel resources in AWS. |
| Cost pattern | The software is free; hardware, electricity, connectivity and operating time are not necessarily free. | Hourly charges apply to running inputs, outputs and add-ons. Billing duration is rounded up to the nearest minute after a 10-minute minimum; region and configuration affect cost. AWS charges while a channel is running even if it receives no content or produces no output. AWS pricing |
| Resilience | OBS itself does not provide a second encoder, backup network path or backup power source. | AWS says standard channels use two processing pipelines in different Availability Zones for increased channel resilience. That covers processing pipelines, not every possible failure between your source and YouTube. |
| Production workflow | Scenes, sources, transitions, filters, audio mixer, hotkeys, Studio Mode, plugins and API support suit hands-on desktop production. | Configured inputs and outputs suit managed cloud processing; channel design and AWS operating expertise matter. |
| Likely fit | A creator or small team with capable hardware who wants direct control and can monitor and recover the local setup. | A team that needs cloud video processing and can design, operate and pay for the required AWS resources. |
Which one should you choose?
Choose OBS when the local production is the point
OBS is usually the more straightforward choice if you need to switch scenes, combine sources, mix audio or manage a show from a desktop, and you already have a computer that can run it reliably. You avoid MediaLive’s metered AWS channel charges, but take responsibility for the machine, software, power, internet connection and recovery when something fails.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Choose MediaLive when cloud processing fits your operation
MediaLive may fit a production team that wants managed cloud video processing and is prepared to configure and monitor AWS inputs, outputs and channel resources. Its two-pipeline standard-channel design can improve resilience within MediaLive’s processing layer; it does not ensure that your source, network path, YouTube ingest or monitoring will remain available.
If the job is prerecorded-video looping
A continuous prerecorded playlist is not the same workload as a live production with changing scenes and sources. For that specific YouTube-only use, StreamNeo is #1 to consider: it loops uploaded videos from the cloud, supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and offers a free first day.

What a 24/7 stream needs beyond an encoder
Think of continuity as a chain: source or playlist, encoder, power and network, YouTube ingest, monitoring, and a person or recovery system able to respond. An encoder choice addresses only part of that chain. YouTube recommends a tested backup encoder and continuous audio/video monitoring; AWS’s channel resilience does not replace those end-to-end safeguards.
- Source availability: confirm that the video, playlist or live production remains available to the encoder.
- Encoder recovery: plan what happens if the local OBS machine crashes or the cloud channel or its input fails.
- Network and power: for a local setup, consider the computer, router and internet upload path as separate dependencies. A UPS may bridge some brief power interruptions for local equipment, but it will not fix an internet outage, prolonged blackout or encoder failure.
- YouTube ingest: YouTube warns that connectivity disruption can break a stream. Its guidance is to provide outbound bandwidth for the primary stream plus the backup stream plus 20% headroom; calculate using configured upload bitrates, not download speed. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
- Monitoring and response: watch audio and video quality and test how the viewer experience behaves when the primary encoder or connection is lost.
Prepare and test the YouTube stream
YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. First-time live-stream enablement may take up to 24 hours. Check the current requirements in YouTube’s encoder guide before scheduling a launch.

- Configure the encoder ahead of time. YouTube advises setting it up at least two hours before an event and starting it at least 15 minutes before the event. These are event-oriented recommendations, but the preparation and early-start practice is useful for a continuous channel too.
- Enter the YouTube ingest details. Use the stream URL and stream key provided for the intended YouTube stream in the encoder. Treat the key as a credential; do not publish or share it.
- Check the preview. In YouTube Live Control Room, confirm that the incoming picture and sound are correct before relying on the stream.
- Test failover deliberately. YouTube recommends testing by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable, then confirming that the player switches to the backup encoder. Do this in a controlled test, not by risking an important broadcast.
- Monitor continuously. Check audio and video, not just whether the stream appears connected. YouTube’s live streaming tips recommend continuous quality monitoring.
What MediaLive may cost
AWS bills MediaLive based on running inputs, outputs and add-ons, with charges continuing for a running channel even when it is not receiving content or producing outputs. The total depends on region and configuration; consult the AWS MediaLive pricing page and estimate your actual channel design rather than treating an example as a quote.
For scale only, the AWS pricing page’s US East (N. Virginia) example lists a standard channel with two HD HEVC inputs, five AVC outputs and advanced audio at $3.942 per hour, based on the page accessed in 2026. Its 12-month reserved example lists $0.78 per hour and $564.12 per 30-day month. Neither is an expected bill for a simple single-output YouTube stream: the configurations differ, and region and resource choices matter. AWS says eligible reserved usage can save up to 75% versus on-demand with a 12-month commitment, subject to its terms; this is not a universal savings guarantee.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
OBS has no software license charge, but a 24/7 local installation still consumes electricity and internet capacity and requires suitable hardware and operational attention. Compare total operating responsibility and costs, not just the encoder’s software price.

Does YouTube archive a 24-hour stream as one video?
YouTube’s cited encoder guide says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. It does not establish that one uninterrupted 24-hour event will be archived as one complete recording. If a full-day VOD matters, verify the current YouTube workflow and plan your recording and archive strategy rather than assuming a single complete archive.
