To change what viewers see in a cloud-hosted YouTube stream, update the video or playlist in the cloud streaming service that supplies the feed—not in YouTube Studio. Studio manages the YouTube event and connection; the cloud encoder or service controls the media sent through that connection. Because no provider is specified here, its exact source-replacement steps cannot be stated universally.
Understand which controls change the video
YouTube Studio and a cloud-hosted encoder do different jobs. Studio creates or schedules the live event and provides the stream URL and key. The encoder uses those credentials to send video and audio to YouTube. The encoder or streaming service determines which file, playlist, or other media is sent.
That means a Studio setting generally cannot replace a video stored in a third-party cloud service. To make a remote change, use that service’s dashboard or controls to change its source. Whether the change takes effect immediately or requires restarting the stream depends on the provider.
Update the source and check the YouTube feed
- Open the YouTube event. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create a stream or select a scheduled event. YouTube documents reusing settings for recurring events with the same encoder configuration. See Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Connect the cloud encoder. Copy the stream URL and stream key from YouTube into the encoder’s YouTube or RTMP configuration. YouTube’s instruction is: “To start streaming, enter your YouTube Live server URL and stream key into your encoder.”
- Change the media at its source. Sign in to the cloud encoder or streaming service and select the replacement file, edit the playlist, or change the media input using that product’s controls. The exact menu names and whether a restart is needed vary by service.
- Check the preview. In Live Control Room, verify that the incoming preview shows the intended video and that audio is present and correct before going live. YouTube recommends checking the preview and monitoring video and audio quality; see its live streaming tips.
- Start or end the event as needed. Start the encoder and click Go live if your event workflow requires it. When finished, stop the encoder and end the YouTube stream as appropriate. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; longer streams may not be.
Protect the stream key
YouTube describes stream keys as similar to a password and address for the stream. Keep the key private and grant access to the cloud service only through its intended credential settings. If you reset the key in YouTube, replace the old key in the encoder too; otherwise, it may no longer be able to send the feed. YouTube says owners and managers can reset keys, while editors and viewers cannot. See manage your live stream settings.

When a change needs a new stream configuration
If you manage streams through YouTube’s API, treat the incoming feed and the live event as separate resources: a liveStream represents the feed and delivery settings, while a liveBroadcast represents the event. One stream can be bound to multiple broadcasts, but only one event is live at a time in the documented recurring-event pattern. API writes require OAuth authorization.
Some stream properties cannot be changed after creation. YouTube identifies format, frame rate, ingestion type, and resolution as fixed fields; if you need different values, create a new stream with the required settings. Troubleshoot a remote video update
- The old video is still playing: Confirm that you changed the active source or playlist in the cloud service, not just the YouTube event settings. Check whether the provider requires saving, publishing, or restarting the source.
- YouTube shows no incoming preview: Check that the encoder is running and that its server URL and stream key match the selected event. If the key was reset, update it in the encoder.
- The preview is right but viewers see the wrong event: Verify that you are looking at the intended scheduled event in Live Control Room and start the encoder and event associated with it.
- Video appears but audio does not: Check the selected media file and the encoder’s audio input, then confirm audio in the preview before going live.
- You need a different resolution or frame rate: If the required stream property is one YouTube marks as unchangeable after creation, create a new stream configuration rather than trying to edit that field.
What to check before choosing a cloud encoder
Since update behavior belongs to the provider, confirm these points with the service you plan to use:
- Can you remotely change a file or playlist, and does the change take effect without restarting?
- How are stream keys stored and who can access them?
- Can you preview and monitor video and audio, and what recovery options are available if the feed drops?
- Does it support YouTube’s required ingestion format?
- Is the service available in your Indian region, and what latency and costs apply there?
