To fade between songs automatically, set up a DJ playback app such as Mixxx before your streaming encoder. In Mixxx, add authorized tracks to Auto DJ, choose a transition mode, and enable Auto DJ; Mixxx plays and crossfades the next track, while your encoder sends the combined audio and video to YouTube. YouTube carries the live program—it does not crossfade your playlist for you.
What you need—and what handles the fade
The transition happens in the playback and mixing stage, not in YouTube’s broadcast controls. Mixxx Auto DJ schedules the next local track and performs the crossfade. Your encoder captures that composed program and sends it to YouTube. YouTube hosts the broadcast and may scan it for rights matches. These are separate parts of the setup; YouTube’s Live Streaming API distinguishes the broadcast event from the audio-video stream.
- Mixxx Auto DJ: queues the next track and crossfades it with the current one.
- Streaming encoder: captures the mixed audio and your visual and sends the program to YouTube. YouTube recommends RTMPS and provides encoder settings; check its current encoder guidance.
- YouTube Live: receives the stream, hosts the broadcast, and checks live content for third-party matches.
The YouTube API’s documented continuous-broadcast example concerns broadcast management, not transitions between songs. Keeping a broadcast active does not itself mix a playlist.
Set up automatic crossfading in Mixxx
- Prepare music you are authorized to stream. Confirm that your rights cover livestreaming and any other applicable use. YouTube says it scans live streams for third-party content; a match can interrupt or terminate a stream. Even licensed third-party content may require the rights owner to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Check the requirements before going live using YouTube’s copyright guidance.
- Add tracks to Auto DJ. In Mixxx, add your tracks or a playlist to the Auto DJ playlist. It starts empty. Once you enable Auto DJ, Mixxx loads an upcoming track near the end of the current one and crossfades into it. See the Mixxx 2.5 manual for Auto DJ details.
- Choose a transition mode. Select a cue-based mode if tracks have useful intro and outro markers, or a fixed-duration mode if you want the overlap to last a chosen number of seconds. The modes behave differently; see the comparison below.
- Listen to transitions and adjust cues or timing. There is no universal fade duration for lofi. A track’s arrangement, percussion, ambience, reverb tail, or silence can make the same overlap sound smooth on one transition and awkward on another. Mixxx says Auto DJ does not account for track volume, frequency content, or rhythm, so do not assume it will balance or beat-match tracks for you.
- Route the mixed program to your encoder and test it. Confirm the encoder is capturing Mixxx’s combined output, that the YouTube stream receives that program, and that you have not accidentally layered a second music source on top. Check YouTube’s Live streaming errors guidance and the Live Dashboard for incoming-stream errors. YouTube’s encoder guidance can change, so verify its current requirements when configuring the encoder.
Choose the transition that suits your tracks

For cue-based transitions, accurate intro and outro markers matter. Preview the results and revise markers that place the handoff too early or late. A fixed duration avoids relying on those markers for overlap length, but one setting may not suit every pair of tracks.

Common problems and fixes
- Auto DJ does not start playing the next song: Check that you added tracks to the Auto DJ playlist and enabled Auto DJ; its queue starts empty.
- The transition cuts off an outro or sounds abrupt: Review the outgoing outro and incoming intro markers. With Fade At Outro Start, a long outgoing outro and short incoming intro can make the result abrupt. Try another cue-based mode or a fixed duration, then listen again.
- The overlap sounds muddy, too short, or leaves a gap: Adjust the fixed duration or cue placement for those tracks. Mixxx Auto DJ does not analyze loudness, frequency content, or rhythm, so it cannot guarantee a polished balance.
- YouTube interrupts the live stream: A technically smooth fade does not grant music rights. Review YouTube’s copyright guidance, confirm the license covers livestreaming, and check whether the rights owner must allowlist your channel.
- The stream has errors or the wrong audio: Verify the encoder is capturing Mixxx’s composed output, remove any unintended second audio source, and inspect the YouTube Live Dashboard and its live-streaming error guidance.
Headphones connected to Mixxx’s headphone output can help you preview an incoming track, but they are optional; Auto DJ can crossfade without them.
