24/7 streaming

How to Set Up a 24/7 YouTube Stream on a Low-Power PC in India

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can run a 24/7 YouTube stream from a modest PC with OBS, but only if the computer, power, and upload connection can sustain it. Start with a simple 720p30 H.264 stream, test it under realistic conditions, and monitor YouTube’s stream health. YouTube’s automatic archive covers streams under 12 hours, so plan separately if you need a complete recording of a continuous 24-hour broadcast.

Before you begin

  • Your YouTube channel must be verified and eligible for live streaming. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours; applicable recent live-stream restrictions can prevent you from going live. Check YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
  • A PC that can open OBS is not necessarily capable of streaming reliably. Encoding, resolution, frame rate, scene complexity, and other workload all matter.
  • Measure your upload capacity and test the actual stream. An encoder bitrate is not an ISP plan recommendation, and a speed test alone cannot prove a connection will remain stable.
  • Use original or properly licensed video and audio. A looping file is not exempt from YouTube’s copyright rules.

Set up OBS and connect it to YouTube

  1. Enable live streaming. In YouTube Studio, confirm the channel can go live. If this is the first activation, allow up to 24 hours for access to become available.
  2. Install OBS Studio. Download it from the official OBS distribution page. YouTube lists OBS as a free, open-source encoder in its encoder directory.
  3. Create a broadcast. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live, then create or schedule the stream. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown in the Live Control Room.
  4. Enter the connection details in OBS. Open Settings → Stream, choose YouTube as the service, and enter the stream key and server details if OBS does not populate them. Keep the key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to your channel. YouTube’s encoder setup steps explain the connection process.
  5. Choose conservative output settings. In OBS, open Settings → Video and start at 1280×720 output and 30 fps. In Settings → Output, select an available H.264 encoder and set the video bitrate to 3,000 Kbps. YouTube recommends 3 Mbps for H.264 at 720p30. These are starting settings, not a promise that a particular PC or connection will hold up.
  6. Set the transmission options. Where OBS offers the options, choose RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval. YouTube recommends a two-second interval and says not to exceed four seconds. RTMPS is the secure extension of RTMP that YouTube recommends.
  7. Choose an encoder the PC can handle. If OBS offers a supported hardware encoder, it may reduce CPU encoding work. Performance and quality depend on the encoder generation and the rest of the workload; an older hardware encoder may produce lower quality at the same bitrate. OBS’s Auto Configuration Wizard can help establish a starting point, but a real test is still necessary.
  8. Build a light scene. For a prerecorded loop, use the media source and avoid unnecessary animated overlays, browser sources, and filters. If the PC struggles, simplify the scene, lower the output resolution, or use 30 rather than 60 fps.
  9. Run a representative private or unlisted test. Use the same video, sound, scene, and settings you intend to use publicly. Listen for audio problems, watch motion for stutter, and inspect YouTube’s stream-health indicators and messages before relying on the setup.
  10. Start the public stream and monitor it. Start streaming from OBS, confirm the incoming feed in YouTube Studio, then go live. Keep a way to check stream health and restart or reconnect OBS if the PC, power, or network interrupts the feed.

Choose a bitrate and resolution the PC and connection can sustain

YouTube’s current H.264 recommendations include the following video ingest bitrates. They describe the encoded video sent to YouTube, not the speed of an Indian broadband plan. Leave headroom for network variation and other household traffic, then validate the choice with a sustained test.

Output YouTube-recommended H.264 video bitrate
720p30 3 Mbps
720p60 8 Mbps
1080p30 5 Mbps
1080p60 12 Mbps

For a low-power PC, 720p30 is a practical first trial. If the representative test remains stable and the connection has enough upload headroom, try 1080p30 at 5 Mbps. If frames drop or YouTube reports an unhealthy connection, step back to the lower setting rather than assuming a higher bitrate will fix the picture. YouTube also lists HEVC and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS ingestion, but H.264 is a compatibility-first starting choice where available.

Make a low-power PC more dependable

  • Reduce rendering work first. Keep scenes simple, remove unneeded filters and animated sources, lower output resolution, or reduce frame rate. OBS identifies resolution and frame-rate reduction as ways to ease performance pressure.
  • Use hardware encoding when suitable. It can shift encoding work away from the CPU, but OBS still has to compose the scene and the entire system must sustain the output. A hardware encoder is not a substitute for testing.
  • Test beyond startup. A stream that works for a few minutes may still fail during a long run. Test the planned media and audio, watch for dropped frames and YouTube health warnings, and verify that the PC does not overheat or sleep.
  • Prevent avoidable interruptions. Set the computer not to sleep while plugged in, keep the encoder open, and consider how local power loss or router disconnection would affect the stream. The necessary backup power depends on the measured load and the runtime you need; there is no evidence-based India-wide UPS size or outage assumption that fits every home.

OBS cautions that meeting its system requirements does not guarantee that a computer can stream or record adequately. There is no universal minimum CPU specification for a 24/7 stream: the demands change with encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene.

Understand 24-hour broadcasts and archives

YouTube automatically archives streams under 12 hours. Do not count on one uninterrupted 24-hour broadcast becoming a complete archive. If keeping a full recording matters, arrange a separate recording or archive workflow and test it; recording locally also adds storage and system workload.

YouTube’s Live Streaming API describes continuous broadcasts that stay live while a separate broadcast is created from part of the content. That distinction is useful when planning a continuous feed alongside a separate event, but it does not change the automatic-archive limit.

Local PC or cloud playout?

Approach Best suited to Main dependencies
OBS on your PC Local control, including sources that must be encoded on the computer The PC, home power, internet connection, and monitoring must remain available.
Cloud playout for prerecorded video Playing an uploaded video library without keeping a dedicated PC running Service availability, plan limits, recurring cost, and the service’s supported use case must be checked directly.

YouTube’s encoder directory lists Gyre as a cloud tool for 24/7 streams of prerecorded videos. Its current availability in India, price, plan limits, and suitability for other sources are not established here. Cloud playout for uploaded recordings is not the same as sending a live camera or real-time computer feed.

Copyright and YouTube live-stream rules

Live content must follow YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms. YouTube identifies matching another copyrighted live broadcast and an active copyright strike among reasons live-streaming access may be restricted. Use material you created or are properly licensed to use; permission to upload a file does not automatically mean you have permission to broadcast its music or video continuously. See YouTube’s guidance on live-stream restrictions and copyright issues with live streams.

Troubleshooting common problems

  • You cannot go live: Check channel verification and live-stream eligibility in YouTube Studio. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours; also check for restrictions on the channel.
  • YouTube does not receive the feed: Recheck the server URL and stream key in OBS. If you changed or reset the key in YouTube Studio, update OBS with the current key. Never expose the key in a screenshot or broadcast.
  • Connection warnings or dropped frames: Check upload capacity while the stream is running, reduce bitrate or output resolution, and retest. Other devices using the connection can reduce available headroom.
  • High CPU use or stuttering: Simplify the scene, remove costly sources or filters, reduce resolution or frame rate, or try a supported hardware encoder. Check YouTube’s stream-health messages to distinguish encoding trouble from network trouble.
  • Video looks poor at the chosen bitrate: Confirm that output resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate match the settings you intended. A more demanding resolution or frame rate needs a higher recommended bitrate and may exceed the PC or connection’s capacity.
  • Stream stops when unattended: Check for PC sleep, power loss, router or ISP interruption, and encoder failure. OBS on a home PC depends on those systems staying available; it cannot itself keep a disconnected computer or network online.
  • The 24-hour stream is not a full archive: YouTube’s automatic archive is for streams under 12 hours. Use a separate tested recording or archive plan if the full continuous feed must be retained.
