FFmpeg documents the concat demuxer as reading a prepared sequence; it does not document live reloading. To change what plays while keeping the publishing process open, put playlist selection in an upstream producer or scheduler and feed that into FFmpeg as a continuous media stream. Validate the sources and timestamps in your own setup: this is an architecture pattern, not a universal command recipe.
Can you edit an FFmpeg playlist while it is running?
Not as a documented live-control method. The concat demuxer reads a script listing files and presents their packets in sequence. FFmpeg’s documentation does not say that it will detect edits to a script already being consumed by a running process. Prepare the sequence before starting FFmpeg if you use this method; do not rely on modifying the open playlist to switch the next video. FFmpeg documentation
Changing the playlist and keeping the publisher process running are separate requirements. For the latter, keep FFmpeg’s output side open and make the changing selection upstream: a producer or scheduler chooses the next media and supplies FFmpeg with one continuous input. This follows from FFmpeg’s input/output pipeline, but is not an official, ready-made dynamic-playlist command. The exact behavior depends on your producer, media, timestamps, installed FFmpeg build, and streaming destination.
Use concat for a fixed, prepared sequence
1. Check that the files are compatible
The concat demuxer expects the files to have matching streams, codecs, and time bases. FFmpeg states: “All files must have the same streams (same codecs, same time base, etc.).” Differences in audio/video layout or encoding can prevent a clean sequence. Timestamp adjustment also depends on each file’s duration, so an incorrect duration can produce artifacts.

2. Create the concat script
Make a text file such as playlist.txt with one file entry per line, using the concat demuxer’s script syntax:
file 'video1.mp4'
file 'video2.mp4'
file 'video3.mp4'Use correct quoting and escaping for paths with spaces or special characters. The paths must resolve from the environment and working directory where FFmpeg runs.

3. Start FFmpeg with the prepared list
For compatible inputs, the basic input pattern is:
ffmpeg -f concat -i playlist.txt [output options] OUTPUTReplace [output options] and OUTPUT with the settings required by your workflow. This command consumes the prepared list; it does not provide a live playlist editor. Confirm option behavior against the documentation for your installed FFmpeg version.
Choose the right concat method for the media
FFmpeg describes three approaches for different jobs. The concat demuxer is useful when avoiding re-encoding and the files meet its compatibility requirements. The concat filter is appropriate when re-encoding is needed to join inputs. The concat protocol is for formats that permit file-level concatenation; it is not a general replacement for either method. Stream copy with -c copy avoids decoding and encoding, but it cannot apply filters and may fail if the target container needs information not present in the source. It does not reconcile incompatible codecs, dimensions, time bases, or stream layouts. If your media differs, normalize it or use a filter/re-encoding workflow appropriate to the sources. Change selections while keeping the publisher open
Separate selection from publishing
- Keep a scheduler or producer upstream. It decides which item plays next and handles the change in selection.
- Feed FFmpeg a continuous media input. The producer must maintain compatible media properties and usable timestamps across changes, or the workflow must normalize/re-encode them.
- Keep FFmpeg responsible for the output connection. Avoid restarting the publishing process merely to edit a text playlist; test how your actual source, FFmpeg build, and destination behave at a transition.
This pattern separates dynamic control from publishing, but the cited FFmpeg sources do not specify a particular scheduler or guarantee seamless transitions. A persistent FFmpeg process is not proof that viewers will see uninterrupted playback: YouTube-specific session and ingest behavior is not established by the sources here. Verify current platform requirements independently before relying on a transition for a live event.

Do not confuse FIFO with playlist control
The FFmpeg FIFO muxer queues output between encoding and muxing and can be configured to handle certain output problems. It is an output-side buffering and recovery mechanism, not a way to select another input video or reload a concat script. FFmpeg documentation
Test the exact build and media before relying on it
- Run a short test with the same FFmpeg build, playlist producer, files, and destination you intend to use.
- Check transitions for timestamp gaps, repeated or missing frames, audio discontinuities, and muxing errors.
- Test both compatible files and any heterogeneous sources you plan to include; do not assume stream copy can repair mismatches.
- Check the documentation installed with your FFmpeg version. The online documentation follows the newest revision, and FFmpeg recommends consulting local documentation when using an older version. FFmpeg documentation versioning
Troubleshooting playlist changes
Editing playlist.txt has no effect
Cause: The running concat demuxer is consuming its prepared input; live reload is not documented. Fix: Use a producer or scheduler that supplies changing selections upstream, or stop and restart FFmpeg with the new fixed list if a restart is acceptable.

Playback breaks at a file boundary
Cause: Source streams, codecs, time bases, or durations differ, or timestamps do not align. Fix: inspect the inputs, correct duration information where applicable, and normalize or re-encode as needed. Test the transition rather than assuming compatible-looking files are interchangeable.
Stream copy fails or filters cannot be used
Cause: -c copy copies encoded packets without decoding, so filters cannot operate on them; the destination container may also require information the source lacks. Fix: choose a suitable re-encoding/filter workflow when processing or compatibility conversion is required.
The stream disconnects during a change
Cause: The output or ingest behavior may depend on the destination and the actual process configuration; the FFmpeg sources cited here do not establish how a particular YouTube session behaves during a source switch. Fix: reproduce the transition in a controlled test and verify current YouTube Live guidance rather than assuming a specific reconnection method preserves the event or viewer playback.
