FFmpeg’s reconnect options can help restore an interrupted HTTP input; they do not, by themselves, guarantee that FFmpeg will reconnect its RTMP output to YouTube. The distinction matters: input recovery and publishing recovery are separate problems. For an HTTP live source, the options below are a starting point—not a guarantee of uninterrupted streaming—and you should verify that your installed FFmpeg build supports them.
First identify which connection is failing
A YouTube stream sent by FFmpeg usually has two relevant sides: FFmpeg reads a source, then writes the resulting stream to YouTube’s ingestion address. A disconnect while reading an HTTP source is not the same as a dropped publishing connection.
| Failure location | Relevant mechanism | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| HTTP input disconnect or end-of-file | FFmpeg HTTP protocol reconnect options | Recovery for a non-HTTP input or a dropped RTMP publishing output. |
| FFmpeg output write or publishing interruption | Separate output and FIFO muxer recovery controls | That a YouTube live session will always recover or resume at the same point. |
| Incorrect destination or stream setup | Check the YouTube ingestion configuration and address | That retrying can fix an invalid address, expired key, or setup problem. |
The FFmpeg Project’s HTTP protocol documentation defines HTTP input options; its FIFO muxer documentation covers separate output-side recovery behavior. YouTube’s LiveStreams documentation describes ingestion addresses and supported protocol context. Those mechanisms should not be treated as interchangeable.
Configure reconnect options for an HTTP live input
For an HTTP source, this documentation-based pattern enables reconnects after disconnection, retries for streamed or non-seekable inputs, and treats EOF as an error that can trigger another connection attempt:

ffmpeg -reconnect 1 -reconnect_streamed 1 -reconnect_at_eof 1
-reconnect_delay_max 10
-i 'https://example.invalid/live.m3u8'
-c copy -f flv 'rtmp://a.rtmp.youtube.com/live2/REDACTED_STREAM_KEY'
Both addresses in the example are placeholders. Replace them with the actual source and the ingestion address for your YouTube stream, but never publish or share a real stream key. Keep HTTP input options before the -i they configure. This is an illustrative pattern, not a universal tested command: source protocol, codecs, output container, FFmpeg build, and YouTube stream setup all matter.
What each option does
-reconnect 1asks FFmpeg to reconnect automatically after disconnection before EOF. It does not make a finite local file loop forever.-reconnect_streamed 1enables retry behavior for streamed or non-seekable HTTP inputs when errors occur.-reconnect_at_eof 1treats EOF as an error that triggers reconnection. The FFmpeg Project describes this as useful for live or endless streams; it is not a general-purpose file-loop setting.-reconnect_delay_max 10sets the maximum reconnect delay in seconds before giving up reconnecting. Choose a bound that makes sense for the source service; the example value is not a universal recommendation.
The option descriptions above follow the FFmpeg Project’s HTTP protocol documentation. In its wording, reconnect means “Reconnect automatically when disconnected before EOF is hit.” The project describes reconnect_at_eof this way: “If set then eof is treated like an error and causes reconnection, this is useful for live / endless streams.”

Bound retries and decide which errors merit another attempt
Reconnect behavior needs a retry policy. The HTTP protocol options also include reconnect_max_retries for a maximum retry count, reconnect_delay_total_max for a total reconnect-delay limit, and respect_retry_after to honor a server’s Retry-After request rather than using exponential backoff. The current reference leaves the default retry-count limit unset, so set bounds deliberately when you need a finite policy.
For additional cases, reconnect_on_network_error covers TCP/TLS errors during connection, while reconnect_on_http_error accepts comma-separated HTTP status codes, including individual codes or categories such as 4xx and 5xx. Add these only when they fit the source and error conditions you expect. Retrying every client error, for example, may not help with a permanent authentication or request problem. The FFmpeg documentation also defines reconnect_streamed as enabling retries for “streamed/non seekable streams” on errors.

Do not mistake input retries for YouTube output recovery
The example’s HTTP reconnect switches apply to an HTTP input. They do not promise recovery if FFmpeg’s publishing connection to YouTube drops, and they do not apply merely because the output happens to be YouTube RTMP. If your input is a camera, local file, RTSP feed, or another non-HTTP protocol, these HTTP switches should not be presented as the fix for that input either.
FFmpeg documents output-side handling separately, including recovery-related controls in its FIFO muxer documentation. That is a distinct mechanism to investigate if writing to the output fails; it is not a guarantee that YouTube will resume the same live session or continue from the exact interrupted frame. YouTube’s ingestion address and stream setup must also be correct: a retry cannot repair a wrong destination or invalid key.

Verify support in your installed FFmpeg build
- Check the installed FFmpeg version and local protocol help before relying on an option. FFmpeg is under continuous development, and its command-line documentation warns that code may have changed since the documentation was written.
- Run the command with a non-secret test destination or a safely redacted command line, and inspect FFmpeg’s output for unrecognized options, connection errors, and retry behavior.
- Confirm that the source is actually HTTP and that the options appear before the input they configure. If the source uses another protocol, consult the relevant protocol’s options instead.
- Check the YouTube ingestion configuration, destination address, stream key, and live-stream setup independently of input retries.
- Test the failure mode you are trying to handle. A source interruption tests input reconnect behavior; a publishing interruption tests output-side recovery. One does not prove the other.
Troubleshoot common reconnect failures
- FFmpeg reports an unrecognized option: The installed build may not support that option or may differ from the current reference. Check the local version and protocol help; do not assume every build has identical behavior.
- The source stops at EOF:
-reconnectalone is documented for a disconnect before EOF. For a live or endless HTTP source where EOF should trigger another connection, consider-reconnect_at_eof 1. A finite file is a different case; reconnect switches do not make it loop forever. - A streamed HTTP input does not retry: Check whether the input is streamed or non-seekable and whether
-reconnect_streamed 1is set before its-i. Confirm that the error is on the HTTP input side. - FFmpeg keeps retrying without recovering: The upstream may still be unavailable, or the problem may be a permanent HTTP status, authentication issue, or invalid request. Set appropriate retry bounds and select error conditions carefully rather than treating every error as temporary.
- YouTube stops receiving video after a disconnect: Input reconnect flags do not establish output reconnection. Investigate FFmpeg’s separate output/FIFO recovery controls and the YouTube ingestion setup; neither guarantees restoration of the same session.
- The command exposes a stream key: Replace it with a redacted value before posting logs, screenshots, or command examples. Treat a real key as a credential.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded video playing on YouTube without leaving a computer or home connection on, StreamNeo is a cloud option rather than an FFmpeg reconnect configuration. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud. It does not stream from a camera or send to platforms other than YouTube.
- Nothing has to stay on at home; the stream runs from the cloud.
- Uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot rather than quality tiers.
- Automatic recovery is included if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free with no card, one free day per account.
The monthly option is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo pricing, then start your free day.
