For automating OBS scenes, start with Advanced Scene Switcher; for cycling through videos, use OBS’s VLC Video source; and for remote control, use OBS WebSocket, built into OBS 28 and later. They handle different jobs, and none guarantees an uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast: your computer, power, internet connection, encoder, media and YouTube ingest still need to work.
Which OBS option fits each automation job?
| Need | Best-supported fit | What it does | Limits and checks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Schedule or trigger scene and media actions | Advanced Scene Switcher | Build macros from conditions and actions, including date/time, media, file and streaming conditions. | The OBS Project forum listing gives version 1.36.1 and OBS 31.1.1 as the minimum version. Check the current listing for your operating system and installer. It automates OBS actions; it does not establish 24/7 reliability. Advanced Scene Switcher resource listing |
| Play a set of videos repeatedly or in shuffled order | OBS VLC Video source | Add multiple media items and enable looping or shuffle in the source properties. | VLC must be installed; match its architecture to OBS (64-bit OBS needs 64-bit VLC). OBS media sources guidance |
| Control scenes and sources from another application | OBS WebSocket | Provides remote control of OBS scenes and sources. | Included by default beginning with OBS 28. Protect the connection with a password. WebSocket is a control mechanism, not a scheduler or an uptime system. OBS Remote Control Guide |
| Send the broadcast to YouTube | OBS encoder settings and YouTube Live Control Room | Connect OBS using YouTube’s stream URL and key, or use a YouTube integration if offered; schedule the broadcast in YouTube when useful. | Scheduling a YouTube broadcast is distinct from automating OBS. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance does not promise continuous unattended operation. YouTube: Create a live stream with an encoder |
Set up a playlist that can repeat
Add the VLC Video source
- Install VLC and confirm it matches OBS’s architecture. For 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC.
- In OBS, add a VLC Video source to the scene that will carry the videos. Open the source properties and add the media files to its playlist.
- Enable Loop for continuous repetition. Enable Shuffle if you want OBS to vary the item order rather than play the list sequentially.
- Check that each item plays and that audio is routed as intended. Keep the playlist’s source in the active scene, and test what viewers see when a video ends or a file is unavailable.
This source provides playlist playback, not a complete broadcast-recovery plan. It depends on OBS and the computer remaining available.
Use Advanced Scene Switcher for conditions and actions
Advanced Scene Switcher is the strongest documented plugin fit for conditional OBS automation: its macros evaluate conditions and execute actions. That can help schedule scene changes or respond to media and streaming states, while the VLC source handles the video playlist itself.
- Check the current plugin listing before installing. As listed on October 3, 2026, version 1.36.1 requires OBS 31.1.1 or later and supports Windows, macOS and Linux; the installer and compatibility should be confirmed for your OS and OBS build.
- Back up your OBS settings before updating or changing plugin versions. The plugin’s update notes advise backing up settings.
- In the plugin, create macros by choosing the condition that should be evaluated and the OBS action that should follow. Start with a simple scene or media transition, then test it before relying on it unattended.
- Test both the expected trigger and what happens when it does not occur. A macro can automate an action within OBS, but it cannot restore power, an internet connection or YouTube ingest.
OBS plugins may need recompilation for later OBS versions, so compatibility is not guaranteed indefinitely. Consult the OBS Project developer guidance and the plugin’s current listing when upgrading.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Use WebSocket for external control, not as the scheduler
OBS WebSocket lets external tools control scenes and sources. It has been included by default since OBS 28, so users on a current supported OBS release generally do not need a separate WebSocket download. Set a password to protect remote control. Older OBS releases may require a separate legacy download; check the OBS remote-control guide for the version you use.
WebSocket alone does not schedule a broadcast, play a playlist, or keep a computer online. Pair it with an actual controller or automation workflow if you need external triggers.

Connect OBS to YouTube and test the broadcast
- Enable live streaming for your YouTube channel if this is the first time. YouTube says first-time enablement can take up to 24 hours, so do not leave setup until immediately before a planned start.
- In YouTube Live Control Room, create or schedule a stream as appropriate. Scheduling can help promote a broadcast, but it does not make OBS launch or recover automatically.
- Connect OBS using the YouTube stream URL and stream key, or the YouTube integration if OBS offers it. Treat the stream key as private; anyone with access to it may be able to broadcast to your channel.
- Use YouTube’s current encoder guidance to choose RTMPS and set quality appropriate to your intended resolution, frame rate and available upload connection. There is no single bitrate or resolution that is right for every stream. Check upload speed and leave capacity for connection variation.
- Before going unattended, test with audio and movement similar to the intended broadcast. Watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators and messages and confirm that viewers receive the expected picture and sound. YouTube live encoder settings and stream health
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not establish archive behavior for broadcasts lasting 12 hours or more.
Plan for the failure points a plugin cannot solve
A 24/7 setup depends on more than plugin settings: OBS must run, the computer must stay powered on, the internet connection must hold, media and audio must remain available, and YouTube must accept the incoming stream. The official documentation cited here does not publish comparative 24/7 uptime results for OBS plugins or validate a particular unattended recovery configuration.

Troubleshoot common setup problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| VLC Video source is unavailable or does not play files | VLC is not installed, or its architecture does not match OBS. | Install VLC matching OBS’s architecture; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. Reopen OBS and test the source. |
| Playlist stops at the end | Loop is not enabled in the VLC Video source. | Open the source properties and enable Loop. Test the transition from the final item back to the beginning. |
| Advanced Scene Switcher is missing or will not load | The plugin may not match the installed OBS version, OS or installer. | Check the current resource listing’s minimum OBS version and platform installer. The October 3, 2026 listing specifies OBS 31.1.1 or later for version 1.36.1. |
| Remote control is exposed or fails to connect | WebSocket authentication may be unset, or the OBS version may differ. | Enable password protection and follow the OBS Remote Control Guide for the version in use. WebSocket is built into OBS 28 and later. |
| YouTube does not accept the stream | Live streaming may not yet be enabled, or the stream URL/key or encoder setup may be wrong. | Allow up to 24 hours for first-time live enablement, confirm the current stream details in YouTube Live Control Room, and follow YouTube’s encoder guidance. |
| Stream health reports problems | Connection capacity or encoder settings may not suit the selected quality. | Review YouTube’s current guidance, check upload speed, reduce quality if the connection cannot sustain it, and test with representative audio and motion. |
| Broadcast drops while the computer is unattended | OBS, power, the host computer, network or YouTube ingest may have failed. | Check which dependency failed and plan monitoring and recovery around it. A scene-switching macro or WebSocket connection alone cannot guarantee service restoration. |
